The Spartans will host travel partner East Tennessee State University on Tuesday, looking to sweep the season series with ETSU after posting a 3-2 win in Johnson City, Tenn., to open the conference season on Sept. 9. The Spartans will then close the season out on Saturday when Campbell comes to the Hodge Center for the first time since 1999. The then-lady Rifles won that match, 3-2, in a dramatic five-set match that saw three sets go extra points. All-Time vs. ETSU: ETSU leads, 5-2. The Spartans won the last meeting, 3-2, on Sept. 9, but are 0-1 all-time against the Lady Bucs at the Hodge Center. All-Time vs. Campbell: Campbell leads, 2-1. The Spartans won the lone meeting in the Hodge Center, 3-2, on Oct. 30, 1999. Home Court Advantage: Upstate heads into its final weekend of regular season play on the cusp of reaching a historic milestone for the Hodge Center. In 33 seasons, the Spartans have posted a 297-97 (.754) in the building, leaving them just three wins from reaching 300 in the building. All three Spartan teams (men s and women s basketball and volleyball) that play in the Hodge have had similar success in the gym, as the teams have a combined record of 839-392 (.681). The 1,535-seat gym has seen three volleyball squads finish with a perfect home slate. The women s basketball team has had two perfect campaigns in the Hodge and the men s basketball team has posted four perfect regularseason slates. 2008 USC Upstate Volleyball Roster No. Name Pos. Ht. ETSU features six freshman, all of whom have appeared in 42 sets this season. Meanwhile, the three Upstate freshman have had an immediate impact as well, with all three appearing in at least 89 of the team s 99 sets. Jane Hawryliw is averaging 0.93 kills per set and also adds 1.51 digs per set. The Sasketchewan native posted a match-high 14 kills in Upstate s 3-0 win over Hampton on Sept. 5. Morgan Thomas, a middle blocker, is averaging 1.57 kills and a team-high 0.67 blocks per set. Thomas has twice posted six blocks in a match this season, including against the leagueleading Florida Gulf Coast. Kelsie Queen is averaging 1.88 kills and 0.90 digs per set. Queen posted three straight 15-kill matches from Oct. 21 to Oct. 25. No other teams in the A-Sun besides ETSU and Upstate feature three freshmen who have played in more than 50 percent of its teams sets. Fab Freshmen Upstate s trio of rookies currently are amongst freshmen leaders in several A-Sun categories. Kelsie Queen is third amongst A-Sun freshmen in kills per set, averaging 1.88 per set. Morgan Thomas is tied for the freshmen lead in sets played (98) and is currently third in blocks (0.67) and sixth in kills (1.57). Jane Hawryliw is second among conference freshman in service aces (0.36). A Thousand Helping Hands Senior Holly Mauldin became the first player in the USC Upstate volleyball team s Division I era to reach 1,000 assists on Saturday afternoon against Belmont. Mauldin, who has posted 1,004 assists at the Division I level and is currently sixth in school history with 1,840 career assists, notched 18 assists and eight digs to lead the Spartans. She is the first player since Upstate moved to Division I in 2007 to reach the 1,000-assist mark and also has a Division-I-era best 16 career double-doubles. Mauldin is also just three service aces away from reaching 100 in her career, a mark reached by just 17 others in school history. Breaking The Streak Junior Morgan Bucciferro broke senior Holly Mauldin s 17-match streak where she led the Spartans in assists on Nov. 7 against Lipscomb. The Spartan setters were part of a 6-2 system, which head coach Jennifer Calloway switched to in late October, allowing Bucciferro to post 19 assists while Mauldin notched 16 and added 15 digs in the four-set match. Bucciferro started the season by leading the team in assists in six of the first eight matches before Mauldin became the starting setter in a 5-1 system. The pair of setters have left indelible marks in the Upstate record book, with Mauldin sixth in career assists and Bucciferro not far behind, in seventh with 1,699 helpers. The Race For 500 Sophomore Sandra Campbell and senior Jovana Lubura are both on pace to reach Upstate s 500-career kill club by the end of the season. The only question is which one will become the first player in the DI era to reach the mark. Campbell is currently ahead by 17 kills, as she enters the week with 484. Lubura, with 467, has caught up since the start of the A-Sun season, as the 6-2 Serbian is averaging 3.01 kills per set while Campbell averages 2.46. The two players could join just 28 others in Upstate s 500-kill club. DI Firsts In back-to-back weeks, the Spartans were able to reach Division I milestones. Sophomore Sandra Campbell became the first player in Upstate s Division I era to post backto-back 50-block seasons thanks to three rejections at North Florida on Nov. 1. Sophomore Megan Healey joined Campbell in the DI superlatives this week, as she become the first player in the Spartans DI era to record back-to-back 250-dig seasons with her second dig against Lipscomb on Nov. 7. Serbian Sensation Senior Jovana Lubura has put together one of the most impressive streaks in the Spartans short Division I tenure, as the 6-2 Serbian strung together four straight doubledoubles from Oct. 18 to Oct. 25. Lubura, who has averaged 11.7 kills and 9.3 digs per set in the last 13 matches, started her run of consecutive double-doubles with 14 kills and

She followed that with 16 kills and 10 digs against The Citadel, 19 kills and 16 digs against Stetson and 12 kills and 11 digs against Florida Gulf Coast. The run ended on Oct. 31 at Jacksonville, as she managed just three kills and nine digs, but against North Florida the next night, Lubura started posted 18 kills and 10 digs. Lubura has moved into eighth in the conference in kills per set, averaging 2.75. In conference play, Lubura is averaging 3.01 kills and 2.40 digs per set. Sandra Stars Sophomore Sandra Campbell added another 10-kill matches to her season total of 15 after a 14-kill match against Lipscomb on Nov. 7, helping her stay among the conference leaders in kills. The 6-1 middle blocker is ninth in the conference in kills, averaging 2.75 per set. The sophomore picked up her second career A-Sun Player of the Week nod on Sept. 6 thanks to her All-Tournament performance at the USC Upstate volleyball classic. She has twice posted 19 kills in matches this season and has hit at a clip of over.300 in 12 matches. Future Catches Up USC Upstate head coach Jennifer Calloway s claims on being the youngest coach in the NCAA with 250 wins lasted less than 10 days. Trinity (Conn.) s Jennifer Bowman, 34, won her 250th career match on Saturday to take the honor from Calloway. Bowman has coached all 11 of her seasons at the Division III level while Calloway has coached 11 seasons at the Division II level and two in Division I, with all 13 seasons of her coaching occuring at USC Upstate. Calloway, 35, is still the youngest coach in Division I with 200 wins. Dig For The Cure Thanks to a five-set match that featured 72 USC Upstate kills, 77 digs and 67 assists against Stetson on Oct. 24 at the Hodge Center, the USC Upstate volleyball team was able to raise $1,123.80 for the Upstate South Carolina affiliate of Susan G. Komen For The Cure, an organization that is dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. For the special match, Upstate brought in a special Breast Cancer Awareness Ford Mustang from corporate partner Vic Bailey Automotive Group. Pink ribbons and other breast cancer awareness packets were donated by Komen For The Cure and handed out. 2008 USC Upstate Volleyball -5-5-5- Head Coach Jennifer Calloway 13th Year 253-170 Overall USC Upstate 95 One of the youngest and most successful coaches in the NCAA Division I ranks, Jennifer Calloway is entering her 13th season at the helm of the USC Upstate volleyball program. In total, as a player and coach, Calloway has spent the last 15 years on the North end of Spartanburg, first as a player, then as an assistant coach before taking the helm as the youngest head volleyball coach in the NCAA in 1996. The milestone is just the beginning of the success that the two-time Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year has experienced in her career. During her 13 years with the Hunter Green, Black and White, Calloway has coached two conference players of the year, three freshmen of the year, two CoSIDA Academic All-District selections and 19 all-conference performers. A part of the USC Upstate community for more than a quarter of its 41 years, Calloway stabilized a volleyball program that had seven coaches in a nine-year period when she took over at age 23 in 1996. Since, she has led USC Upstate to a 246-150 (.621) record and two appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Spartans took nine trips to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinals in 11 seasons at the Division II level with Calloway on the bench. In 2004, Calloway was at the helm of the volleyball program when the University changed its name from USC Spartanburg to USC Upstate and its athletic programs nickname from Rifles to Spartans. In 2007, she led Upstate athletics into the Division I era, coaching the Spartans in the first athletic event at the DI level, a 3-0 sweep of Savannah State on Aug. 24. The 2007 Spartans finished 11-17 overall, the first losing campaign in the Calloway era. However, the young group did produce several memorable moments in their first Division I campaign, including sweeping their final Atlantic Sun Conference weekend with wins over Mercer and Kennesaw State to finish in ninth in the 12-team league. In the classroom, the Spartans rewrote the athletic department s record book, scoring a 3.62 GPA as a team in the fall and recording four perfect 4.0 GPAs during the semester. Calloway s crew featured 12 All-Academic Atlantic Sun Conference selections, more than any other team in the league, helping it earn the program s first AVCA Team Academic Award for maintaining a 3.30 GPA. Calloway (then Jennifer Rakers) was a standout on the USC Upstate volleyball team in 1994, leading the Spartans to a 38-4 record and their second consecutive Peach Belt Conference championship as the team s setter. From a young age, Calloway was influenced by the game of volleyball, with both parents and her sister and brother also coaching the sport at some level. Her father, Fred Rakers, is one of the most legendary coaches in Illinois High School history, winning five Class A state titles at Mater Dei. In 32 seasons, Rakers has posted a 934-186 career mark. Her mother, Rosie, co-coached an eighth-grade team at Aviston (Ill.) to a state title with Calloway. Her brother, Chad, is currently the coach of the C-4 Club team and is the junior varsity coach at Mater Dei. Previously, he coached Germantown Hills (Ill.) Junior High to four state championships. Her sister, Erin, was a part of three state championship teams as a player for her father, Fred, at Mater Dei in 1992, 1993 and 1994 and went on to coach at Union (Ill.) High School. Calloway, a native of Aviston, Ill., earned a bachelor s degree in interdisciplinary studies from USC Upstate in 1995. She and her husband, Brad, are the proud parents of two sons, Joel and Nathan, and one daughter, Jenna.
