Brenda Gray has guided the Sam Houston State volleyball program to a string of successes at both the regional and national level in her 22 seasons as the Bearkats head coach. Her overall record as a head coach now stands at 486 victories and 315 defeats. That translates into a 60.8 winning percentage and an average of more than 22 victories per season. Gray ranks among the top 30 active head coaches in NCAA Division I women s volleyball in career victories. Gray s accomplishments as Sam Houston State Head Coach include: * NCAA Division I national playoffs (1993 and 1996); * Volleyball National Invitational Championship tournament appearance (1994); * NCAA Division II Final Four (1984 and 1985); * Southland Conference champions (1993); * Gulf Star Conference champions (1984 and 1985); * Southland Conference Post-Season Tournament champions (1993 and 1996); * SLC Western Division champions (1994); * Southland Conference Post-Season Tournament number one seed and tournament host (1993 and 1994). Gray has coached two NCAA All-Americans, seven NCAA All- Region players, and 24 All-Conference players who have earned that honor a total of 50 times. Gray was named as Southland Conference volleyball Coach of the Year in both 1987 and 1993 and was named Coach of the Year in the Gulf Star Conference in 1984. In Sam Houston s 14 years at the NCAA Division I level, Gray s teams have won 22 regular season major college tournament team championships and have fi nished either fi rst or second in the Southland Conference eight times. Gray was named as Sam Houston State Volleyball Head Coach in 1984 after serving as a graduate assistant at SHSU and as Head Coach of the girls athletic program at Bastrop High School. An outstanding player at Humble High School, Gray played two years at Lee Junior College before transferring to Sam Houston State. As a Bearkat, she helped lead Sam Houston to a 93-31 record in 1980 and 1981. She received her Bachelor of Education degree in 1982 and her Master of Education degree in 1983. While a student, she was named to Who s Who Among University and College Students, was a member of the Golden Key Honor Society, and received the Outstanding Achievement Award in Physical Education and the Margaret Powell Award for Professional Excellence. Gray and her husband, Tim, have a son, Timothy (20), and a daughter, Tayler (13). Timothy is a pitcher for the Sam Houston State baseball team. They are leaders both in the class room and in the community. Committed to making a difference in the Huntsville community, Bearkat volleyball players volunteer their time to help elementary school children build their reading skills, to promote physical fi t- ness through the Jump Rope for Heart program. The team took fi rst place in the City of Huntsville Bag Some Litter program. In addition, the Bearkats help build participation in youth volleyball with outstanding summer youth camps for kids of all ages. Karlee Butler, Emily Orlowski, and Rhae Walderman were named to the 2004 Southland Conference Academic Honor Roll. Fifth on the 2004 team in kills (147), playing in 30 matches with nine starts... posted double digit kills three times with 12 each against UTA, Southeastern Louisiana, and McNeese... Texas High School All-Star selection this summer...
