The Patriot League s athletic success is achieved while its member institutions remain committed to its founding principle of admitting and graduating studentathletes that are academically representative of their class. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a well-rounded education. 3773 Corporate Parkway, Suite 190 Center Valley, Pa. 18034 610.289.1950; Fax 610.289.1952 Colgate runs W streak to four in a row; Navy gets first PL win Center Valley, Pa. Three teams opened Patriot League over the last week, and it was a good start for Colgate, which picked up a 13-3 victory over visiting Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y. The Raiders garnered a measure of revenge after the Crusaders captured a 9-8 win when the teams met last year in Worcester, Mass., giving Holy Cross its first win in the all-time series against the Raiders. Navy snapped its four-game slide, including two straight losses in League play, with an impressive 15-6 victory over Lafayette on Saturday in Annapolis. Tucker Hull, who was named Rookie of the Week, scored three times and added an assist for the Mids, who avoided falling to 0-3 against League teams for the first time in history. Hull had an impressive all-around week, scoring seven goals and 10 points, including a six-point effort (4g, 2a) last Monday in the 12-11 double-overtime loss at Bucknell. The Raiders remain the League s hottest team, riding a four-game win streak entering Tuesday night s home contest against Binghamton. Colgate has a second non-league game scheduled this week when it visits Fairfield on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. start. League play will continue this week with two games on Saturday. Navy hits the road seeking its first victory away from Annapolis with a 12 p.m. game at Holy Cross, while Bucknell, holding steady at No. 19 in the latest Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Top 20, travels to Lafayette an hour later. One of the most intriguing matchups of the week features Army, ranked 10th in the Nike/IL poll and 13th by the USILA coaches, visiting Rutgers on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Scarlet Knights boast the nation s stingiest scoring defense at 5.0 goals per game entering the week. Before the weekend gets here, there s still business to take care of. Three games populate Tuesday s slate, with Holy Cross visiting Harvard at 4 p.m., followed by two 7 p.m. starts. Colgate hosts Binghamton and Navy welcomes Towson. Bucknell entertains Hartford in Wednesday s sole game at 12 p.m. Navy s Matt Vernam Standings as of 3.15.11 Patriot League Overall W-L PCT. After capturing wins of 12-7 at Bryant on Friday and 14-1 over Wagner at home, the Black Knights found themselves ranked No. 13 in the USILA Coaches Top 20 and 10th in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, both released Monday. The defending Patriot League champions are 4-2 on the season, have won three in a row, and continue their season Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest at Rutgers. Bucknell s Positioning Remains Steady While Army s two wins moved it up the major polls on Monday, Bucknell s 11-9 victory at Hobart kept the Bison exactly where they were last week. Bucknell held steady at No. 19 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, while the Bison are the top team receiving votes in the USILA Coaches rankings not in the top 20. As a side note, the Bison became the second League team to post a victory over Hobart this season with their win on Saturday. A week earlier, Colgate captured an 11-7 win over the Statesmen, their first victory over its in-state rivals since 1964. Navy Hits Halfway Mark The Mids played their third Patriot League contest of the season on Saturday and posted a 15-6 victory over visiting Lafayette at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. It was a critical victory for Navy, which had dropped its first two League contests and avoided falling to 0-3 since joining the Patriot League for the 2004 season. The Mids head to Worcester, Mass., on Saturday afternoon to visit Holy Cross in their fourth League tilt of the season. As a point of comparison, when the weekend ends Navy will have played two-thirds of its League slate, while defending champion Army still has its entire League schedule coming up. Patriot Leaguers Among Nation s Best Scorers As the season continues, severan student-athletes within the Patriot League have distinguished themselves as some of the nation s best at their respective positions. The League features some of the country s most lethal offensive threats, with Army senior Jeremy Boltus sitting second in the country with 2.83 assists and third at 4.67 points per game. Colgate s Peter Baum ranks fifth in the nation averaging 3.00 goals per contest. Navy s Sam Jones is the League s top offensive freshman thus far, as he is second in the League and ninth in the nation at 4.17 points and 13th nationally at 2.67 goals per tilt. Seven Named to 2011 Tewaaraton Watch List Fifty-eight men s lacrosse players across all divisions were named to the 2011 Tewaaraton Watch List on March 4, and seven of them are from Patriot League institutions. Five of the seven League representatives on the list are seniors, including Army s Jeremy Boltus (attack) and Bill Henderson (defense), Lafayette s Stefan Bauer (attack) and Tom Perini (attack), and Bucknell defensive midfielder Jake Clarke. Attackman Charlie Streep of Bucknell is a junior and Colgate sophomore middie Peter Baum is a sophomore. The Tewaaraton Award is the pre-eminent award in lacrosse, awarded to the NCAA s top men s and women s players annually by the Greater Washington Sports Alliance. The list will be narrowed down three times during the regular season until the 10 finalists are announced in May. The winner will be announced June 2 at the Warner Theater in Washington, D.C. Bauer, Stumpf Named Lowe s Senior CLASS Candidates A year after Army s Andrew Maisano was named Lowe s Senior CLASS Award winner for 2010, two more Patriot Leaguers are up for the award in men s lacrosse in 2011. Lafayette s Stefan Bauer and Lehigh s Jonathan Stumpf were named to the list of 20 candidates in February. Bauer is coming off a strong season for the Leopards, as his 15 goals and 30 assists helped the team qualify for its first ever Patriot League Tournament. Stumpf has had a strong 2011 campaign so far, ranking near the team leads in goals, assists and points for Lehigh. Both Bauer and Stumpf have participated in several volunteer endeavors off the field, and each excels academically as well. Bauer carries a 3.61 grade-point average at Lafayette majoring in economics with a focus on finance, while Stumpf has a 3.88 GPA in the Integrative Business and Engineering Honors Program at Lehigh. That s exactly what he did on March 1, as he scored a League record-tying eight goals in the Leopards 16-8 win at Wagner on March 1. One of the most explosive offensive players in the Patriot League, Perini is once again posting impressive numbers. He s tied for the League lead averaging 3.00 goals per game, which places him tied for fifth nationally. On March 4 he was named one of seven Patriot Leaguers to the 2011 Tewaaraton Watch List. Army Voted Preseason Favorite Fresh off an 11-6 campaign, a perfect 6-0 Patriot League record and an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Army was voted the 2011 preseason favorite by head coaches and sports information directors around the League who could not vote for their own teams. The Black Knights secured the maximum 78 points and 12 first-place votes, ahead of 2010 runner-up Navy, which garnered 58 points and one first-place vote. Bucknell took third with 51 points and the lone remaining first-place vote, while Colgate secured fourth with 39 points. Lehigh (31 points), Lafayette (30) and Holy Cross (13) rounded out the poll. Patriot League Hits National Television in 2011 A total of eight Patriot League men s lacrosse games will be nationally televised on CBS College Sports Network in 2011, including all three games of the League Tournament on April 29 and May 1. The Patriot League Tournament is the only conference tournament in the country that is nationally televised in its entirety. Navy s game hosting Maryland Friday, April 8 is the first Patriot League game to hit the national television airwaves, as the teams will battle at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. at 7 p.m. Eight days later, CBS College Sports Network returns to Annapolis to televise the annual Army-Navy matchup Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m. In addition to the eight games on CBSC, the Navy-Johns Hopkins matchup in Baltimore, Md. April 23 will be televised on ESPNU beginning at 8 p.m. All Roads Lead to Late April The 2011 Patriot League Tournament is scheduled for Friday, April 29 and Sunday, May 1, at the site of the regular-season champion and highest seed. All three games will be televised nationally by CBS College Sports Network, with the semifinals taking place Friday at 5 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. The championship contest is slated for Sunday at 3 p.m. The Patriot League Tournament is the only conference tournament that is scheduled to be nationally televised in its entirety. Last season, Army posted a perfect 6-0 record to earn the regular-season title and hosting responsibilities. After defeating Lafayette in the semifinals, the Black Knights posted a victory over archrival Navy in the championship game to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
