After last playing Dec. 13 at Wisconsin, the Phoenix took the rest of last week off from competition to focus on final exams. The Phoenix fell in Madison to the Badgers, 70-56, but there were positives for head coach Brian Wardle to focus on despite the loss. Freshman center Alec Brown had career highs of 18 points and eight rebounds in the contest while senior Rahmon Fletcher continued his strong senior season with 18 points. Green Bay also committed just 10 turnovers in the game and tied the Badgers on the glass, 30-30, behind a career-high 10 rebounds from junior Jarvis Williams. With a win against, the Phoenix would extend its winning streak in the series to five games. In last season s meeting, Green Bay won 67-41 on the road behind 10 team three-pointers and a combined 29 points from Fletcher and Bryquis Perine. enters the game with an identical record to Green Bay s, but unlike the Phoenix, the Fighting Sioux played just two days ago. fell at UM-Kansas City 69-61 in that contest. If he continues at his current average this season, Fletcher is on pace to score over 1,700 career points and finish in the top five on the program s scoring list. The senior is also on pace to finish in the top-10 in field goals attempted, three-point field goals made and attempted and games played. MIGHTY MOUSE Fletcher, nicknamed Mouse, has been a consistent scorer this season, tallying double figures and at least 15 points in nine of 11 games. In the nine games in which he has reached double figures, Fletcher is averaging 19.0 points and shooting 51.9 percent (67-129) from the field. His distribution has improved significantly of late. In the past four games, he has averaged 5.8 assists per game to a scoring average of 18.5 points. Against Youngstown State, he had one of his better all-around games, adding six assists, five rebounds and four steals to his game-high 19 points. I LL TAKE THAT Fletcher currently has 170 steals in his Phoenix career. The senior is third in the Horizon League in steals per game, averaging 1.9 per contest. He recently passed Ben Johnson (1988-92) for third place on the program steals list. His five steals against Miami (Nov. 21) tied his career high and tied for the ninthmost in school history. CHARITY STRIPE Fletcher is 29-for-34 (85.3 percent) from the foul line this season, good for third in the Horizon League. Freshman Alec Brown has made 15 of his last 16 free throws and is shooting 77.4 percent from the line. BROWN S BLOCK PARTY Freshman Alec Brown has 17 blocks in 11 games after blocking a pair of shots against Wisconsin. His average of 1.5 blocks per game ranks fifth in the Horizon League. Brown s block total is already the thirdhighest in school history for a freshman. He had six blocks in his college debut, just one shy of the program s single-game record of seven set by Nate Barnes against Northern Iowa on Dec. 11, 1982. JUMPIN JARVIS Junior Jarvis Williams was activated prior to the game at Buffalo after missing the previous seven contests. The team s starting power forward at the beginning of the season, Williams is averaging a team-high five rebounds per game. Williams grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds in the game against Wisconsin. OFFENSIVE GLASS CLEANERS Green Bay ranks first in the Horizon League in offensive rebounds per game (15.3). GREEN BAY ROSTER No. Name Pos. Yr. Ht. Wt. Freshman Daniel Turner, who had nine offensive rebounds against Duquesne, is tied for fourth in the league at Green Bay is grabbing a league-high 40.2 percent of the rebounds off its missed shots. START IT UP Brian Wardle has used three different starting lineups this season. Daniel Turner (six games), Troy Snyder (three games) and Jarvis Williams (two games) have all started at the four. Turner started his first college game on Nov. 27 against NDSU and has started the last six games for the Phoenix. Fletcher, Perine, Baker and Brown have each started all 11 games for the Phoenix. BAKER S DOZEN Junior Steve Baker was perfect against Youngstown State while scoring 13 points. He hit all five of his field goal attempts and went 3-of-3 from the line. He has scored in double figures in four of the past six games. The junior college transfer is among the league leaders in rebounding (4.9) despite standing at just 6-foot-2. THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT Freshman Alec Brown, at 7-foot-1, is one of the tallest players in the country, while junior Eric Valentin, at 5-foot-4, is one of the shortest. The 21-inch size differential between the two players is the biggest of any teammates in the country. COMEBACK KIDS Three of Green Bay s four wins this season have come in games they have trailed in the second half. Green Bay defeated Miami (Nov. 21) after trailing by five at halftime, defeated NDSU (Nov. 27) despite a nine-point second half deficit and knocked off Youngstown State (Dec. 4) 74-59 after trailing by eight. Green Bay ended the game against YSU on a 28-5 run, including a 19-1 spurt while taking the lead. Fletcher scored 18 of his 23 points after halftime against Miami and 10 points in the first five minutes of the second half against State. In the wins over Miami and NDSU, Perine averaged nine points in the final five minutes. He hit his last six shots against NDSU, including the game-winner. SENIORS IN THE CLUTCH Green Bay seniors Rahmon Fletcher and PHOENIX NOTES HORIZON LEAGUE UPDATE Bryquis Perine have stepped up in big spots early in 2010-11. Fletcher is averaging 20.5 points per game and shooting 50.0 percent from the field in Green Bay s four wins. Perine, whose 14-point second half and game-winning jumper helped the Phoenix beat NDSU, has scored 35 points in the second halves of Green Bay wins. REVERSING FORTUNES Sophomore Seth Evans ended his recent struggles with 13 points against YSU, going 3-for-3 from long range and 4-of-4 from the line. HEUER-ED GUN Redshirt freshman Clayton Heuer gave Green Bay a spark with a career-high seven points against Youngstown State. All seven of Heuer s points came in the first half, when he made a three-pointer and a pair of layups. DOMINANT DEFENSE The Phoenix held UMD to just 23.7 percent shooting and 36 points in the opener. UMD s shooting percentage was the lowest by a Green Bay opponent since holding Idaho to 22.6 percent (12-53) on Nov. 17, 2000. The 36 points tied for the fourth-fewest by a Green Bay opponent in the shot clock era. The point total was also the smallest for a Phoenix foe since Green Bay defeated East Carolina 63-36 on Dec. 8, 1998. The team s 39-point margin of victory is the largest for the Phoenix since downing Northern Michigan 106-58 on Dec. 29, 2005. AND YOUR NAME IS The Phoenix are integrating seven newcomers into the team this season. The newcomers include three junior college transfers (Jarvis Williams, Eric Valentin, Steve Baker), one Division I transfer (Terry Johnson) and three freshmen (Alec Brown, Kam Cerroni, Daniel Turner) WORTH THE WAIT Wardle s win over Minnesota Duluth made him the third coach in program history to win his debut. Brian Wardle became the sixth head coach in Green Bay history on April 15, 2010 He spent the previous five seasons as an assistant coach with the Phoenix under Tod Kowalczyk. 2010-11 HL Standings Team HL Pct.
