STEWARDS REPORT Ballina Jockey Club BALLINA RACECOURSE Sunday 2 October 2016 Weather: Fine Track: Good (3) Rail: True STEWARDS: B J Kliese (Chairman) & M A Holloway RIDING CHANGES: As L Dittman (incorrectly declared) and L Rolls (overweight) were unavailable, stewards permitted the following rider changes- Race 3 Race 6 J Missen (Aimee s Game) B Looker (Soaked) At a subsequent inquiry L Rolls was fined the sum of $200 (AR120(b). RACE 1: SMSF Audits F&M Benchmark 55 Handicap 1000m: Big Shoes Bumped on jumping. Destiny s Lass Trainer Mr S Phelps was fined the sum of $100 for the late declaration of T Harrison as the rider (LR35(2)). Near the 200m was inconvenienced for a stride and had to be shifted out to continue forward. Eagle s Nest Bumped on jumping. Ilia When questioned regarding the tactics adopted in the early stages, apprentice Ms O Pickering said she was instructed to settle in position with cover just behind the speed. Ms O Pickering explained after her mount was awkward into stride she initially elected to ride with vigour in an attempt to cross Strawberrychampane, however shortly after she restrained her mount when it failed to muster sufficient speed to do so, before again riding with vigour approaching the first turn in attempt to hold out Eagle s Nest and Super Zulu and as a result had to be restrained when awkwardly placed in restricted room and from that point was forced to race three wide without cover for the remainder of the event. Apprentice Ms O Pickering was advised that a greater effort of intent should have shown in the initial stages of the event, where there was an opportunity to improve forward and take a position on the rail. Ms O Pickering was also cautioned in relation to improving into a position where there was insufficient room approaching the first turn (AR137(a)). Super Zulu When questioned regarding the performance, apprentice J Woodhouse explained after his mount was tardy to begin he rode with vigour in the early stages in an attempt to take up a forward position, however approaching 1
the 800m he elected to ease his mount, when racing wide, in an attempt to find cover, however was inconvenienced by runners to his inside and as a result was forced to remain wide for the remainder of the event. Apprentice J Woodhouse stated that in his opinion the mare, which was first up, failed to sustain a strong finishing effort due to racing wide without cover for majority of the event. A post race veterinary examination of the mare revealed no abnormalities. RACE 2: Nathan Kinch 2008 Grogan Medal Classic Class 2 Handicap 1900m: Altovise Raced keenly in the early stages. Muntij Rounding the first turn ran wider on the track. Over the concluding the stages was restrained when awkwardly placed close to heels. My Cousin Melanie Inside the 300m laid in when placed under pressure. One More Two More When question regarding the performance, rider M McGuren explained his mount raced comfortably throughout the event, however passing the 800m when asked to improve his mount was forced to raced wide and rounding the home turn was carried wider and covered excessive ground. M McGuren stated in his opinion the gelding failed to appreciate the slow tempo of the event and was unable to take sufficient ground from the leader who was advantaged by being able to dictate terms throughout. Trainer Mr M Dunn concurred with the comments made by rider M McGuren. A post race veterinary examination of the mare revealed no abnormalities. Pink Chaperone Was withdrawn by order of the stewards at 1.31pm on veterinary advice after the mare kicked out and got its right hind leg caught in the barrier partitions and was found to be slightly lame. Stewards ordered that all monies placed on Pink Chaperone be refunded in full and all successful wagers placed with bookmakers prior to 1.31pm be subject to the following deductions in the dollar on the face value of the ticket: 1 st ) The Golden Pig less 2 cents win, 8 cents place 2 nd ) Altovise less 8 cents place 3 rd ) One More Two More less 2 cents place Trainer Ms L Paton was advised the mare would be required to undergo a pre race veterinary examination prior to its next start. Regularity Knuckled on jumping. The Golden Pig When question regarding the improved performance since its most recent start at the Gold Coast (10/09/2016), where the gelding was beaten 37.6 lengths, trainer Ms J Williams explained the gelding was continually restrained throughout the event when overracing badly and as a result was unable to finish off the race. Ms J Williams said the gelding took benefit from being able to dictate terms in a slow tempo race and where it was able to race where comfortable. Apprentice Ms R Williams concurred with the comments made by trainer Ms J Williams and explained the gelding appreciated a soft lead and took advantage of the cheap sections obtained throughout the event. Stewards adjourned an inquiry to a date to be fixed, following a post race veterinary examination, which revealed a needle mark to the near side neck in the gelding s jugular region. Evidence was taken from the clubs veterinary officer 2
Dr John Clunie and trainer Ms J William in relation to the findings. Racing NSW stewards conducted a full search of the stables equipment, vehicle and float, where evidence was collected. Both blood and urine samples were obtained from the gelding post race and were the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory for testing. RACE 3: Ballina Fair Maiden Handicap 1300m: All Hype Slow to begin. Aimee s Game Near the 200m was eased and shifted in to avoid the heels of the weakening It s Over. Airhead Reared simultaneously as the start was affected and lost ground (4L). Trainer Mr D Bowen was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing record of the gelding. Near the 700 was steadied after improving onto heels. Brooks Express Approaching and rounding the home turn raced keenly. It s Over Raced wide without cover throughout. Legend Lass Near the 1100m, when racing greenly, was restrained when awkwardly placed in restricted room. Passing the 800m hung out and had to be steadied to avoid heels. Near the 400m took charge of its rider, hung out and had to be steadied to avoid heels. The racing manners of the gelding were brought to the attention of trainer Mr L Clapham. Magnormous Knuckled on jumping. Tell Ya Nicki Inside the 300m laid in when being placed under pressure. RACE 4: Collins Hume Maiden Plate 1600m: Cinnamon Rolls Near the 500m when weakening was bumped on the hindquarters and became unbalanced. Fashion Saga Near the 500m was checked when crowded between Cinnamon Rolls, which was weakening and Lightening Rock, which shifted out slightly away from Tolkee, which was also weakening. All riders were asked to exercise care and reminded of their obligations when contending for positions. Mystic Skies Slow to begin and failed to muster in the early stages. Pequeninos Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Near the 800m was steadied after improving onto heels. Tolkee Overraced in the early stages. Rounding the home turn was awkwardly placed close to heels and was momentarily held up for clear running. RACE 5: Spill the Beans Standing At Aquis Farm C,G&E Benchmark 55 Handicap 1000m: Battalion Slow to begin and was crowded shortly after, then refused to muster in the early stages. 3
Dancetime Approaching the home turn was momentarily held up when awkwardly placed close to heels. Eddy Would Go Raced wide throughout. Rounding the home turn was held up for clear running and on straightening was steadied when disappointed between Far Dooley and Spartan Warrior, which shifted out slightly. Approaching the 200m when shifted inwards in an attempt to find clear running was again steadied between runners when disappointed. Inside the final 50m was unable to be fully tested when awkwardly placed in restricted room. Far Dooley Raced wide without cover throughout the event. Inside the final 100m laid in when being placed under pressure. Magic Topaze Began awkwardly. Near the 50m was restrained when momentarily crowded. RACE 6: Tursa the Community Cup 1400m: Hula Girl Between the 100m and the 50m raced in restricted room and was unable to be fully tested. Mana Manu Overraced in the early and middle stages. Name And Shame In the early stages raced fiercely with its head up and refused to settle and approaching the first turn was steadied when crowded by Curley Mac (S Traecey), which shifted in when not fully clear. S Traecey was reprimanded for careless riding (AR137(a)). Soaked Slow to begin. Voltaire Lumiere COT: to be ridden with vigour in an attempt to settle further fwd; settled midfield. Rounding the home turn was momentarily eased when hampered by Curley Mac. RACE 7: Slipway Hotel Class 1 Handicap 1250m: Lanikai Miss Near the 150m was steadied when crowded by Flinders Beach (J Morris), which whilst being ridden along shifted in when insufficiently clear. J Morris was reprimanded for careless riding and reminded of his obligation to correct his mounts in similar circumstances (AR137(a)). Le Couronment Trainer Mr S Lee was fined the sum of $100 for the late declaration of apprentice J Woodhouse as the rider (LR35(2)). When questioned regarding the tactics adopted in the early stages, apprentice J Woodhouse stated he intended on settling in a position just behind the speed. Apprentice J Woodhouse said that in his opinion he felt there would be sufficient speed to allow runners to his inside to improve forward and afford him the opportunity to take up a position just behind the lead, however approaching the first turn when unable to take up a position behind the lead with cover he was forced to ride forward outside the lead to avoid being caught wide. J Woodhouse said that his mount was inclined to overrace throughout the middle stages, which in his opinion was to its detriment over the concluding stages. 4
