Shifflett s first home run of the season and Wike s singlegame career high, five RBI helped Carolina to its eighth win of the year. Additionally, both Kiani Ramsey and Leah Murray also had three hits and one RBI. Five Tar Heels each logged a hit, totaling 14 the secondmost hits in a single game this season. Katie Grace Olinger earned her first win with Brittany Pickett picking up the save of the season at Charlotte. NEW FACES STEPPING UP AT THE PLATE Sophomores Hailey Jensen and Hailey Cole, and redshirt-freshman Kristina Burkhardt each earned a spot in the starting lineup during the fourth week of competition as the trio batted.493 collectively. The group logged 20 hits and nine of Carolina s 22 RBIs, including a pair of home runs by Jensen and Burkhardt. In the Carolina Classic opener, Cole hit 3-for-3 at the plate and ended the weekend with a four-game hitting streak. Against Harvard on Sunday, Burkhardt went 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs while also making five putouts in right field. Jensen, with only 17 at-bats this season, is hitting at a.471 clip with eight hits and three RBIs in the Carolina Classic alone. TAR HEELS TESTED IN WEEK THREE Three weeks into the 2018 season, Carolina faced arguably its toughest week of the year. The Tar Heels traveled to South Carolina, taking on the Gamecocks on Tuesday in Columbia. Less than one day later, the team went to Cathedral City, California to face four NCAA tournament teams, including two-time defending WCWS Champion Oklahoma. The lone team who did not make the Tournament in 2017, Liberty, advanced to the finals of the inaugural National Invitational Softball Championship. Although the Tar Heels could not come up with a W during the third week of play, Carolina nearly upset No. 19 Cal on a 4-3 decision and scored the first earned run against No. 4 Oklahoma during the tournament despite the 3-1 loss. CAROLINA SPLITS THIRD ANNUAL ACC/BIG TEN CHALLENGE North Carolina hosted the ACC/Big Ten Challenge the past two seasons, beginning in 2016. The Tar Heels own a 6-6 overall record. Carolina posted a 2-2 record during the annual challenge, going 1-1 against each opponent. In the first season, Carolina split 1-1 against both Northwestern and Illinois. The Tar Heels faced the same outcome versus Ohio State and Purdue in 2017. Most recently, Carolina topped Wisconsin and Illinois in the first meeting, before falling in the final two games of the weekend. The ACC leads the overall series, 59-45. The ACC came out on top in 2017 and 2018. SUCCESS IN SUNSHINE STATE North Carolina opened the 2018 season with a 3-1 record at the UCF Friends of Jaclyn Tournament in Longwood, Florida with wins over Butler, Louisville and UCF. Leah Murray led Carolina s offense with eight hits and six stolen bases for a.571 average, scoring five of UNC s 12 runs. Taylor Wike batted.500 with six hits and an RBI. In the circle, Brittany Pickett tossed 19.0 scoreless innings, earning a 3-0 record with 16 strikeouts Katie Grace Olinger earned two starts and hurled 10 strikeouts throughout the tournament. PICKETT SECURES FIRST 2018 ACC PITCHER OF THE WEEK HONOR Tossing each of North Carolina s three wins in Longwood, Florida, sophomore Brittany Pickett was named ACC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 13. This is Pickett s third such honor and first for the Tar Heels in 2018. Pickett went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in the first week of the season, tossing two complete-game shutouts and four scoreless innings in a third game. In her first appearance of the season, Pickett came into a bases-loaded situation, pitching three consecutive outs to hold off Butler s attempt at a comeback. Later that day, Pickett turned around to throw a complete-game shutout against Louisville, allowing a mere four hits. Pickett struck out seven batters in an extra-inning game at UCF to secure her second shutout of the weekend. COASTAL FAVORITE IN ACC PRESEASON POLL North Carolina has been ranked second in the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference preseason softball poll, as voted on by the ACC head coaches and released Tuesday by the league. The Tar Heels, conference runners-up last season, received 121 points and one first-place vote to sit atop the Coastal standings. Defending champion Florida State was voted the league favorite, with 121 points and 11 first-place votes. After UNC, Notre Dame, Louisville and Boston College round out the top five. TAR HEEL YOUTH IN THE ACC With a senior class of two, Taylor Wike and Katelyn Shifflett, North Carolina has the second-youngest team in the ACC for the 2018 season. Of the 23 person roster, the seniors make up nine percent of the team. Entering its first softball season, Duke has the youngest roster with one senior to make up six percent of the 17-person team. Six freshmen and one transfer from Texas Tech join the Tar Heels for the 2018 season. 2018 SCHEDULE OUTLOOK Carolinas 53-game schedule features 11 NCAA Tournament teams, including Women s College World Series Champion Oklahoma. The Tar Heels are also schedule to face four regular season conference champions: USC Upstate (ASUN), Longwood (Big South), James Madison (Colonial), and Oklahoma (Big 12). 2017 IN REVIEW Despite fielding a team of 12 freshmen and returning just seven letterwinners from 2016, North Carolina put together an impressive 2017 campaign, going 40-21 and finishing tied for third in the ACC at 14-9. For the first time in program history, the Tar Heels reached the ACC Championship and the NCAA Regional Final in the same season. UNC captured four wins over ranked opponents (NFCA Poll), the third-most in school history. Statistically speaking, UNC set a new single-season record for stolen bases for the second consecutive season, swiping 106 bases to rank 16th in the nation. The Tar Heel pitching staff recorded a school-record nine saves, led by a record six by freshman Brittany Pickett, which ranked third in the NCAA. The Carolina defense matched its record with 24 double plays turned, good for 31st in the country. Individually, Kendra Lynch set single-season records for RBIs (68) and total bases (144), ranking top 10 in the nation in both categories as well as home runs (21). The Second-Team All-American finished her career ranked second all time at UNC in slugging percentage (.644), home runs (52) and RBIs (168), as well as third in total bases (378), seventh in walks (81) and 10th in strikeouts (280). Berlynne Delamora shattered the single-season walks record with an ACC-leading 49, while Leah Murray led the conference with 38 stolen bases and 74 hits. The ACC Freshman of the Year and a top-10 finalist for NFCA National Freshman of the Year, Brittany Pickett ranked in the top 10 in the ACC in 13 pitching and five offensive categories. The rookie finished among the top 10 all time among UNC freshmen in eight offensive and 12 defensive categories, breaking the rookie record for appearances, tying the home run record, ranking second in batters faced and walks, and third in on-base percentage, wins, starts and innings. TAR HEELS IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT The Tar Heels earned a bid to the 2017 NCAA Tournament for the 14th time in program history, claiming the #3-seed at the Oxford Regional (#12 Ole Miss). The Tar Heels have advanced to the national postseason allbut-three years (2002, 2011, 2014) since its first berth in 2001. UNC has been selected as a host twice, in 2008 and 2009. After dropping the opening game to No. 22 Arizona State, 9-3, on Friday night, Carolina returned to the field on Saturday facing elimination. UNC took down Southern Illinois, 4-0, behind a three-hit shutout from Brittany Pickett, then exacted revenge on the Sun Devils in the nightcap. Kellyn Daly picked up her first career victory in her first-ever complete-game effort, leading UNC past ASU, 3-2, to knock out the Sun Devils and advance to the Regional Final. UNC took an early 2-0 lead over the host #12 Ole Miss, but the Rebels scored five unanswered runs over the final two innings to punch a ticket to their first-ever Super Regionals, ending UNC s season at 40-21. Carolina is now 17-28 all time in the NCAA Tournament after going 2-2 at the 2017 Oxford Regional. The Tar Heels reached the Regional Final game for the fifth time (2005, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2017), but have never advanced to Super Regionals. PAGE 3 HEAD COACH DONNA J. PAPA 33RD SEASON 1,206-676-5 Donna J. Papa, the NFCA Hall of Fame head softball coach at North Carolina since 1986, has helped build Carolina softball into one of the top programs in the country. Papa has led Carolina to the NCAA Tournament in 14 of the last 17 years, five regular-season ACC titles and the 2001 ACC Tournament crown. UNC has posted a winning record in 29 of her 23 seasons, with 14 40-win seasons, including a 50-12-1 campaign in 2008, which included an ACC regularseason title at 18-2 and a bid to host an NCAA Regional. Papa became the 11th Division I head coach to win 1,000 career games during the 2011 season, defeating Virginia, 5-3, as part of a doubleheader sweep on April 2. The following season, Papa became just the ninth Division I head coach ever to win 1,000 games at one school, earning her 1,000th Carolina victory against East Carolina on March 13, 2012. Papa entered 2018 ranked 10th all time in career victories, including fifth among active Division I head coaches Carolina claimed the 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament Championship, has won five regular-season titles, and has played in five ACC Championship games. Papa has been named ACC Coach of the Year five times - in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2008 and 2012. Since coming to Chapel Hill in 1985, Papa has helped 10 players earn 13 NFCA All-America honors with a total of 67 All-Southeast Region honors. Additionally, 12 of Papa s student-athletes have taken home 16 Academic All-District honors, including two-time Academic All-American Christine Kubin (1995, 96) Prior to arriving in Chapel Hill, Papa spent two seasons as head volleyball and softball coach at Susquehanna University. She served as an assistant softball coach at St. John s University from 1981-83 after spending one year as an assistant coach at UNCG while in graduate school. Papa earned a bachelor s degree in physical education from the University of Connecticut in 1979. She played four seasons of softball for the Huskies and was co-captain her junior and senior seasons. Papa s playing career also encompassed stints with ASA Major Fastpitch teams including the Franklin Coronets (West Haven, Conn.) and the Waterford (Conn.) Mariners. Carolina has won at least one game in 21 of 26 tournaments and advanced to the title game for the fifth time in 2017. UNC is 30-40 all time in 26 appearances, including going a perfect 3-0 with back-to-back wins over top-seeded No. 16 Florida State to capture the 2001 ACC Championship. Since the move to a single-elimination bracket in 2008, Carolina has advanced to the Semifinals every season and played in the Championship game in 2011 and 2017, where it fell to Florida State both times. UNC has claimed the #1-seed five times in program history but advanced to the final game as the top seed just once. UNC was the #2-seed for its ACC Championship season in 2001. UNC hosted the ACC Tournament this season for the third time in program history, defeating #6-seed Syracuse and #7-seed NC State before falling, 4-3, to top-seeded No. 4 Florida State in the ACC Championship. The conference tournament was previously held at Anderson Stadium in 2006 and 2012. UNC finished third at the tournament both times, going 2-2 in 2006 and 1-1 in 2012. PICKETT HEADLINES FOUR ALL-ACC TAR HEELS Brittany Pickett became the third Tar Heel to be named ACC Freshman of the Year, while also garnering All-ACC First Team and earning a place on the inaugural ACC All-Freshman Team. Kendra Lynch, Leah Murray and Taylor Wike each received All-ACC Second Team honors. Lynch picked up her second consecutive all-conference honor, while Wike, a junior, has made All-ACC all three years. LYNCH, PICKETT FINALISTS FOR NAT L AWARDS Kendra Lynch was named one of 34 finalists for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, while Brittany Pickett was selected as a top-25 candidate and subsequently one of 11 finalists for Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I Freshman of the Year. Lynch was the third Tar Heel to be named a finalist for the Division I Softball s highest honor, following Danielle Spaulding (2009, 2010) and Kristen Brown (2015), while Pickett is the second to make the Freshman of the Year list since the award s creation in 2014 (Taylor Wike, 2015) and the first to make the cut for top-10. She was one of six ACC players to make the list of finalists, joining four Seminoles and Syracuse s Sydney O Hara. The ACC Freshman of the Year, Pickett was the only ACC player to make the Freshman of the Year top-25. A Second-Team All-Region selection, she was fantastic in the circle and at the plate, going 22-10 with a UNC-record six saves, while ranking fourth in the ACC with 12 home runs. FEEL THE NEED FOR SPEED After breaking the all-time single-season record for stolen bases as a team in 2016, Carolina s baserunners haven t missed a beat. UNC stole 90 bases over 59 games in 1993. That record stood for 23 years until the 2016 Tar Heels overtook it, posting the first-ever 100-steal season with 102 swipes in 126 attempts over 57 games. The 2017 bested that mark once again, swiping a total of 106 bases in 130 attempts over 61 games. UNC finished second in the ACC and 16th in the nation in total steals, while its 1.74 steals per game rank 20th in the NCAA. Three Heels rank in the top 10 in the ACC as individuals, with Leah Murray leading the conference with 38 on the year fourth all time at UNC. The 2016 Tar Heels were the first Carolina squad ever to have more than three Heels with 10-or-more stolen bases, as four players were in double digits including 25+ by Destiny DeBerry and Aquilla Mateen. The 2017 Heels upped the ante again, with five different Tar Heels in double digits. In addition to Murray, Destiny DeBerry swiped 19 and Taylor Wike had a career-high 18. Freshmen Hailey Cole and Micaela Abbatine round out the school-record five Heels in double digits with 13 and 10, respectively. NCAA LEADERS Carolina was among the best in the nation statistically, ranking 17th in the nation with 59 home runs, 16th with 106 stolen bases, 33rd in runs (305) and 31st in double plays (24). Individually, Kendra Lynch ranked fourth in the nation in total bases (144), sixth in home runs (21) and 10th in RBIs (68) ). Additionally, she was one of nine pitchers in the country to have pitched at least 90 innings and only hit a single batter. Berlynne Delamora s patience at the plate paid off, ranking 15th in the nation with a school-record 49 walks, while Brittany Pickett was third in the NCAA with six saves this season also a UNC record and 36th in victories. The top-10 finalist for National Freshman of the Year, Pickett had the third-most wins, ninth-most home runs and 10th-most strikeouts among NCAA freshmen on the season. Leah Murray ranked 15th in the nation with 38 stolen bases and was been the 19th-most-difficult batter to strike out, with just six Ks over 200 at-bats. PAGE 4
