I.S.S.F Newsletter August 2016 Opening Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games ******** The opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics were colorful and spectacular even if when the Games Budget was significantly lower than that of the Manchester 2012 Games. The focus was on the protection of the environment. In this Issue: Opening Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games... 1 It was doubly themed to portray environmental preservation as well as exhibiting the History of Brazil and this was all launched in the nights of 5 th through 6 th August in Rio de Janeiro s Maracana stadium. The opening ceremony began with a famous musician and composer of Samba music; Paulinho da Viola and continued with other live performances and colorful fireworks. Conversely, the Amazon forest, whose scope reduces from year to year, was celebrated with a beautiful portrayal of stretched light. Arrival of the 2020 Olympic Flag in Tokyo The flag of the 2020 Olympic Games to be held in Japan that was received from the IOC President; Mr. Thomas Bach at the Rio Olympics closing ceremony of August 5 to 21, 2016, arrived in Tokyo accompanied by the Governor of Tokyo. AISGOC meeting for the 4 th ISGs with the NOCs in Rio On August 7, 2016, the Organising Committee of the 4 th Islamic Solidarity Games held a meeting with the ISSF Member NOCs on the side-lines of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Participating dignitaries included His Excellency Hon. Azad Rahimov; Minister of Youth and Sport of Azerbaijan, Col. Hamad Kalkaba; ISSF Senior Vice President and Mr. Mohamed Al- Ahjari; ISSF 4 th Vice President. The Organising Committee of the 4 th ISGs presented a film showing the preparations made for the Games including the Stadiums and Sports Venues in which the Games would be held and the Olympic Village. Consultation Meeting on the Istanbul 2021 Games Bid On August 24, 2016 at the ISSF Secretariat, a consultation meeting was held regarding Turkey s application to organise the 2021 ISGs in the presence of Mr. Khaled bin Abdullah Al Shaykh; General Director of ISSF Secretariat, Mr. Eric Gottschalk; Member of the ISSF Marketing Commission, Mr. Ashraf Abdellatif Seyed; Head of Technical Affairs and Mr. Mustafa Edrees; Department of Languages and International Relations. The meeting discussed the amendments of the Games Regulations before submitting the candidacy of Turkey. His Excellency Hon. Faisal Abdulaziz Al-Nassar; Secretary General of the ISSF received in his office the meeting participants who presented the results of their discussion. Mr. Faisal urged both parties to be keen in ensuring necessary contacts between the two parties in order to present the results at the next meeting of the ISSF General Assembly. Weightlifting Championship in Jordan As part of the cooperation between the ISSF and the NOC of Jordan, it was decided to organise in Amman, the 4 th ISSF Weightlifting Championships for men and women from 2 nd to 8 th September 2016 under the supervision of the Jordanian Weightlifting Federation and in collaboration with the Arab and Asian Weightlifting Federations. Mr. Mohamed Jaloud; Secretary General of the Arab Weightlifting Federation said that 25 Islamic countries have announced their participation. Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation P a g e 10
