CapitalBicyclingClub news Olympia,WA July 2014 Available on the web at: www.capitalbicyclingclub.org and at finer local bike shops Presidents Corner Two-County musings and upcoming club needs By Bill Stevenson, CBC President CBC President Bill Stevenson with Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee who rode the Two-County 105 mile route this year. Upcoming 2014 CBC Board and General Meetings Bill Keim - CBC member and booth volunteer Today was the day of the Two-County Double Metric Century. At the point I left we had over three-hundred people taking part. Certainly not our biggest turn out, but significantly up from last year, and trending in the right direction. Before the ride I couldn t help but think of some of the early years for the event and imagining how excited we would have been to get fifty riders let alone three hundred. Times change and sometimes not for the better. Now the Two-County is a fundraiser which allows us to support various worthy projects such as the Bicycle Commuter Contest, Bikes for Kids, and the Thurston County Bike Map. In the early days of the club we didn t fund anything because we didn t have any money. For many years our only source of income was membership dues, which barely covered the cost of our newsletter. In fact, the first several years there was no charge for the Two-County, or any of the club rides. Those of you who read the minutes of the CBC board meetings may be aware that we will soon be considering making some major changes in the nature of events we sponsor and examining the CBC s role in Thurston County. I d appreciate input from club members regarding the direction the club is headed and in what ways we might better serve cycling and you our members. Please don t say you just want to ride your bike and be left alone. I d really like to see some fresh ideas and energy. We ve had some interesting ideas proposed, but I do have concerns that bigger events will require more volunteers, and volunteer hours, which I m sure most of you are aware is always a challenge. It was great that when push came to shove many of you stepped up and volunteered for the Two-County, but we always seem to struggle, with a few folks doing more work than they should. Volunteer burn out is, and has been, a major problem from the very beginning of the CBC. My hope is that if we can develop a strong consensus on what we would be excited to see in both events and projects that the CBC should support, some of our perennial problems might disappear. My personal E-mail is wdstevenso@gmail.com. That isn t a typo - stevenso, there is a jazz guitarist with the same name as me, he got there first. I promise I ll read every word you send. And by the way, club elections are in October. There is always room for new blood. Washington State s First US Bike Route Designated By Louise McGrody, WA Bikes Bicycling in the nation s #1 Bicycle Friendly State just got a boost: official designation of Washington s first interstate bike route in the nationwide US Bicycle Route System. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has approved official recognition for USBR 10. It will be designated in future updates of the highway design manual followed by transportation planners and engineer at all levels of government, providing the basis for maintaining and improving the route over time. The 407-mile route follows the northern, cross-state-highway corridor, State Route 20, from Newport, Washington, at the Idaho border to Anacortes, Washington s international ferry terminal. The USBR 10 interstate route will eventually connect all the northern tier states, linking Washington state to Maine and running from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. Bike Travel a Booming Business This bike route designation is an example of what can be accomplished by working with partners like Washington Bikes and local communities, said WSDOT Secretary Lynn Peterson. It s estimated by the Outdoor Industry Association that Washington could see as much as $650 million annually from bike travel statewide. These are benefits that will be shared throughout the route. When fully developed, the United States Bicycle Route System will contain more than 50,000 miles of interstate bicycle routes crisscrossing the country and providing route guidance to touring cyclists, commuters and recreational riders. The USBRS effort in Washington state is being coordinated by Washington Bikes, in partnership with the Washington State Department of Transportation. The project depends on volunteers from Washington Bikes to collect and harmonize input from bicycle clubs, tour groups, cities, tribes, counties and regional transportation organizations. Washington Bikes executive director Barb Chamberlain said, Washington Bikes works to promote bike travel across the state, and the USBR mapping effort is helping us develop detailed information on a fantastic set of major connections. Identifying the best route provides value not just for those who go on bike tours of Washington state, but also for those seeking everyday bicycle connections town to town. Chamberlain also serves as co-chair of Gov. Inslee s Blue Ribbon Task Force on Parks and Outdoor Recreation, which includes promotion of Washington s outdoor economy as one of its focus areas. Echoing Sec. Peterson s emphasis on the economic value of bicycle travel, Chamberlain noted, Bike travel is particularly good for small towns, since bike travelers are fueled by calories and stop many times along the way. We just helped publish a guide to multi-day bike tours in the state, Cycling Sojourner Washington; some of those tours make use of parts of USBR 10 and all of them identify great places to stop, stay, and spend. Bike-friendly towns that welcome visitors are good for the people who live and ride there every day, too. All of the new members who signed up through the new website have been added to the Group- Spaces email list to receive club updates. During the month of May, we received 2400 page views on the website (an average of 78 per day). Since the new website was launched in March, we ve received 7,500 page views. David continues to update information on the website. We currently have 56 spaces (riders) registered for the Two-County Double Metric Century, for approximately $1500 in revenue. The final early registration discount ends June 15. Capital Bicycling Club Olympia, WA with folks who signed up for info at our Bike Expo booth. She also encouraged board members to use their Facebook accounts to link to the Club s info. Event Planning for Next Year Stefanie would like to get started with the event planning for next year. She would like to form a working group to develop the plan. She would like members who are willing to meet a second time per month with the planning group. There was a discussion about having the event coordinator selected and participating in the plan, or have the plan developed so we could be specific in recruiting an event coordinator. Stephanie felt that there isn t time in our existing board meetings to do the planning necessary on the timeline that s necessary. An alternate suggestion was to have a second board meeting each month just focused on the planning. There was also a discussion about surveying members and participants in this year s Two County ride about what they are looking for in this type of event. Stefanie suggested using the email address we get with registration to send participants after the ride. Stefanie proposed that we have another meeting after our July meeting to begin the planning. She suggested July 9 as a possible date. Shawn agreed to check on the availability of the meeting space. Stefanie will develop a list of decision points ahead of time and share with the board members via email. Two-County Double Metric Century Ride Photos Thanks to everyone who made this years ride a great success! Education Requests Ken received a request from a teacher at Nisqually Middle School to do a bicycle education presentation. He will meet with the teacher next week to plan the event. Bill S. mentioned that he did a bike rodeo for Lacey Parks and Recreation. They had 1,000 kids show up and Bill did the safety checks that were required for the kids to ride the skills course. Two-County Promotions Stefanie reported on the promotions she has been doing for the Two-County Ride. She s getting posters out and will follow up Volunteers for Two-County Ride Lynne mentioned that she was needing two or three sag riders. Stefanie said she would be willing to do it. There are a number of other volunteer spots that she hasn t been able to fill. A number of other names were suggested as possible volunteers. Mountain Ride Status Adam reported that he was going to be having surgery and unable to ride his bike during the recovery. He wouldn t be able to do any rides until after August. Guest Article: Annie Rosser s First 24-Hour Mountain Bike Race By Annie Rosser and Dr. Andy Rosser, Downtown Olympia At noon on Saturday, the race starts. I still have 10 more hours until my first lap. At 9:45, I can see lights dancing over the hills. I know one of those lights has to be number 204. The headlights glare as riders dismount and go into the timing tent. It dark enough that I don t see her until she has already scanned her timing chip. I race over to her and she helps me put on the wristband that is supposed to track where we are on the course. I run over to my bike and I hop on to it. My dad follows closely behind. I cut into the darkness. The stillness is eerie and close. My dad encourages me from behind and then we are silent. After only a few miles, his voice pierces the darkness, Annie, keep going! Seconds later, another rider comes up behind me and says, Your dad broke his chain. Keep going! It never really registered to me that I was only 3 miles out on a 15 mile course, and without my dad, I had no food, water, or a jacket. On my own, I began to see the shadows move in ways they shouldn t. Along the course, I climbed up, up, up a very long hill and my mind started drifting. I suddenly realized that I was less than a fourth of the way through and that I would be out there a long, long time. I rode on. Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a huge hairy creature moving. It yelled and I realized it was just a guy dressed up in a Sasquatch costume. It still creeped me out. The next thing I remember was my headlight glaring at a sign that said DEVIL S UP. I quickly changed my gears and tried it out. Why not? I got almost to the top when my tire hit a root. I couldn t go up any further. I got off my bike and walked the rest of the way up the hill. I got back on and rode for a little bit then came to a sign that said DEV- IL S DOWN. I knew that I also wasn t going to make it down in the dark, so I took the side path. (Partly due to intuition and partly because I heard another rider s scream, followed by a crash at the bottom of the hill.) Well, even if it was a longer route, it was probably better than a full-body cast and teeth replacements. I would tell you more about the rest of the ride, but sometimes things that leave you feeling exhilarated are hard to remember in detail. At the finish line, the lights came into view and I stood up and started pedaling hard. The light was almost blinding now. I entered the timing tent. It was so good to see people who weren t on bicycles. My mouth was dry, my stomach was grumbling, and I was cold. No wonder. I was left without water or food, and I was only wearing a skinsuit. (How can I be expected to live like that?) The machine beeps as I pass the timing chip over it. I run the chip bracelet to the next person on my team. If you ever think of doing the 24 hour mountain bike race, most definitely pack water, and watch out for the scary dude in the sasquatch costume. (Dad s note: Yes I did inadvertently leave her out there as described She wouldn t have let me stop her race if I tried, though in my defense. This all occurred at during the 24 Hour Round the Clock relay race in Spokane, WA s Riverside Park over Memorial Day Weekend 2014.) Read more about Dr. Rosser s adventures as an amateur cyclist www.rosserchiro.com. He is the team chiropractor for the CBC/Olympia Orthopaedic Associates Racing Team, and assists other athletes in the community. For more information, he can be contacted at andy@ rosserchiro.com. 6 capitalbicyclingclub.org CBC and CBC members, help the club by making your amazon.com purchases through the Capital Bicycling Club website. Third Bridge Will Close Chehalis Western Trail Gap By Louise McGrody, WA Bikes New bike and pedestrian bridge under construction A new bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Pacific Avenue in Olympia will complete the Bridging the Gap project for Thurston County s popular Chehalis Western Trail. Lacey resident and Washington Bikes board member Bob Duffy reports: After many years of planning, funding, designing and environmental & community review, the Chehalis Western Trail, a major bicycle/pedestrian trail in Thurston County, will receive a new bicycle/pedestrian bridge across Pacific Avenue in the City of Olympia. The Pacific Avenue crossing will close the last gap in the trail and greatly benefit all trail users. Bridges have been previously constructed over the other two trail gaps Interstate 5 and Martin Way. This project was lead by Thurston County. Construction is currently underway on the $4.7 million project and completion is slated in fall of 2014. The new bridge will make it a breeze to spin over and past the previously confusing and potentially more dangerous surface street trail alignment. The 22-mile Chehalis Western Trail travels north-south through the heart of Thurston County. It connects to the Woodland Greenway Trail and the Yelm-Tenino Trail, and serves as the centerpiece of the county s regional trail system. Check the county website to learn more about Thurston County Trails.
