ASH BOWLING CLUB - Rules of the game Bowls is one of the few sports where true sportsmanship still prevails. This is a position that should be guarded jealously, and by following a few simple principles listed below, you can help maintain the sportsmanship and courtesy that has characterised the game of bowls for so many years. MEMBERSHIP All subscriptions must be paid to the Honorary Treasurer by the 1st June in each year. Any member whose subscription is unpaid by that date shall be debarred from participating in any of the facilities provided by the Club. The annual subscription shall be such respective amounts as determined at the Annual General Meeting. New members joining later in the season may be eligible to pay pro rata as determined by the committee. New members are not allowed on the green until approved by a club coach. This may be waived if the member is a known bowler from another club. The coach has sole discretion on this point. Friends or relatives of club members, should they wish to try bowling, must be accompanied on the green by a club member. Members may introduce visitors to the Club for play, providing no restriction on the rights of other members to use the green is involved. The fee for each visitor shall be 16

the standard green fee in force for each game of 21 ends. Such visitors may have the loan of Club woods. If in the opinion of the Committee, the conduct of any member shall be such as to endanger the character or interest of the Club, the Committee shall have the power to expel the member. USE OF THE GREEN The season shall begin and end on dates to be fixed by the Committee. Play may take place on any day between 12 noon and dusk. The green keeper or his assistant has sole discretion over use of the green and when necessary may close any rink(s) or the whole green. Nets must be used if stipulated by the green keeper. Dress Code Whites or Greys as indicated in fixture list or competition details. Shirts must be predominately white. All members should wear the club badge. Plain navy blue or club ties when required. Trousers must be tailored. Members may wear casual attire for roll-ups if the green is not being used for club fixtures or competitions. Flat soled shoes must be worn when using the green. 17

BOWLS ETIQUETTE Check that you know the correct dress at all times for the occasion and wear it. Always wear correct bowling shoes whenever you walk on the green. Make sure that you know the correct starting time of the game and be there in sufficient time to change your footwear, help to prepare the green and be on the green ready to start at the appointed time (i.e. at least 30 minutes before the start) Help to clear away both equipment and tea things afterwards. In a team game, be there to welcome your guests. Smoke only in the designated area. Do not swear in the club house or on the green. Mobile Phones on silent DURING THE GAME All play must be in accordance with the rules of the English Bowling Association/ Bowls England. Before play commences switch mobile phones to off or silent mode. For the less able, enter and leave the green by the steps where provided. Avoid stepping or standing on the edge of the green. Do not drop your woods onto the green. This can cause damage to the green. Shake hands with your opponents before and after the match. 18

Do not sit on the steps or the bank with shoes on the edge of the ditch. This can cause damage to the green. Do not drop litter in the ditches - use the receptacles provided. Stand still while your opponent is about to play. Do not infringe the laws of rink possession. Wait until the result of the end has been decided before moving any bowls. If you are responsible for keeping score, compare your card with that of your opponent at regular intervals. Unless you have been delegated to decide the shots at the completion of the end, do not interfere in any way with this process. If an umpire has been called, stay clear of the head until a decision has been made. If you have lost the game remember to congratulate your opponent. Never be heard to criticise the green or your opponent. Acknowledge a fluke and commend an opponent s good bowl. 19
