Club Chatter October, November and December 2018 FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK Dear Friends, Summer is officially over on the calendar! The mornings and evenings are beautiful. Rise and shine; catch those glorious sunrises. Enjoy the spectacular sunsets and nighttime skies. Please remember you must complete your 2018 monitoring responsibility by December 31 st, 2018 to remain an active club member in 2019. If you have any questions, please ask a club officer. Please note that the club will be CLOSED October 8 th and 18 th for functions held by the Recreation Center. Consider attending one of our get-togethers at the monthly Breakfast Club. We have enjoyed many wonderful breakfasts at restaurants nearby. Coming breakfasts will be held at Richi s, Haymaker s, and Biscuits. The sign-up sheet is on the credenza. Mah Jongg, an ancient Chinese game played with tiles, has again become the rage. If you would like to learn this game, please sign up for free classes given by Geri Lahti. Not only will you enjoy learning the game under her patient tutelage, but you will meet other club members and form new friendships and playing groups. Geri s next class begins Wednesday, October 10 th. During the second and third week of the class she welcomes members to join in the play to refresh their skills. The sign-up sheet is on the credenza. The holidays will be here before you know it and what better way to start them off but with a gift to the Toys for Kids event held at the Women's/Boomers Club at Kuentz Recreation Center. There will be gifts (donated) for the kindergarten children from Desert Oasis School in Surprise and the Nadaburg School District in Wittman, plus four more groups. New unwrapped toys can be brought to the club between November 26 and December 7. The event takes place from 9 to 11 am December 10. (Reprinted from the October Rec Center News) Sign-up sheet for helpers will be on the credenza prior to the event. There are two locked boxes on the credenza. Both boxes only accept checks, made out to Sun City West Women's Social Club. The RED box is for event payments, like the Bar-B-Q or other paid events. Please do not put event payments into the TAN box. If there is no RED box on the credenza, then there are no event payments being accepted. The TAN box is for membership payments. Renewals for 2019 will be accepted into the TAN box starting DECEMBER 1. To renew, please write a check for $20 and PUT YOUR REC CARD NUMBER on the check and deposit it into the TAN box AFTER DECEMBER 1. You may pick up your 2019 card and dot from the plastic box on the monitor's desk about one week after you deposit your check. There is no form to fill out for renewals. The TAN box is available for NEW memberships at any time. New members must fill out an index card with their information. The TAN box can also be used for replacement badge payments. Place a check for $5 into the TAN box, with the way you would like your name to appear on the badge in the memo line of your check. If your address, phone number, or email changes, please put a note into the TAN box, OR email a note to scwwomensclub@gmail.com, OR simply click to reply to any women's club email and include a note of the changes. 2

SCW Rec Center and Charter Clubs have new web site looks! The rec center updated their web site software. The look is more modern, the fonts are more readable, and the site is more colorful with many pictures added by the rec center to enhance the viewing experience. THURSDAY GAME DAY Thursday Game Day is a great opportunity to learn a new game (or games) and, even more importantly, make new friends! We encourage you to come alone and/or use this as an opportunity to introduce our Club to a friend. You don t have to register just show up at 12:30 pm and be ready to enjoy the afternoon. PROGRESSIVE (SOCIAL) BRIDGE Join a fun group of ladies who enjoy social bridge each Tuesday. This group has been playing for many years but has room for more tables. Meet at the club at 11:30; seating is on a first come, first served basis; play begins at 12:30 p.m. Four rounds of six hands are played. At the last table, the lady who has the highest score at that table receives 50 cents from the other 3 ladies. For those who come early, practice hands are played until the official start. Social Bridge is also played each Saturday at noon. Sign-up is required one week in advance. Call Barbara Clark at 623-214-0405. The same rounds are played and prize money is awarded. 3rd MONDAY POTLUCK LUNCHEONS: Luncheons are continue during the summer. We need additional help in the kitchen as some of our regulars are not here. When you sign up to attend the luncheon and, if you are willing, write in a W next to your name which indicates that you will help that day. Your duties will be to arrive at 10:30 a.m., collect the food as members come into the club, put food in the refrig or stove, make coffee, set up the tables, set the food out on the tables, etc., - and, as a reward, you will be able to go through the buffet line first! Always a good thing! After the lunch, only the spoons are washed, so clean-up is done quickly and you can enjoy an afternoon of cards. IMPORTANT LUNCHEON RULES Bring a dish to share that will feed 8-10 people. No crackers or chips. Bring desserts only if you have signed up for desserts. All items should be cut and ready to serve. Please make sure they are not still frozen. Do not bring spoons or serving utensils as they may get lost. After the meal, if you wish to save your item, cover it and place in refrig or appropriate storage. The club will not wash your dish or put it away. Your covers, aluminum wrap and plastic wrap will be next to the table after the meal. If you would like others to take your left-overs home, leave them on the serving table or distribute to your friends. Please remember that if you don t participate in the luncheon, you are asked to wait until after 1 p.m. to enter the club for cards. Also, if you did not bring food to share, please do not take food or desserts from the buffet tables. SUNSHINE COMMITTEE If you know of someone who is ill or has lost a loved one, please advise our Sunshine Chairperson, Janice Pavelka at 623-584-3377 so that a card can be sent. It is so important to let our members know that we are thinking about them during their time of distress. 5
REMINDERS CLUB HOURS: Monday Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. MEMBERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES: Remember, it is your responsibility to monitor at least once during the year to be a member in good standing. If you are concerned about making coffee or closing the club, sign up with a friend to help you with the duties. Monitors are to arrive at the club at 10:45 a.m. and are at the club until closing at 4 p.m. A Key Monitor always is there in the morning to help you open the club and find the supplies. You may play games while monitoring, but your most important duty is to welcome the members, make sure they have signed in, and to give information to prospective members. Our monitors are the ambassadors for the club and so important to the smooth operation of the club. If you have something that can be shared, PLEASE do not bring it to the club. We welcome you back after you are feeling better. PERFUME: Consider others, please. Many people are unable to tolerate perfumes so leave it at home when you visit the club. FANS: If this is a problem, bring a jacket or sit away from the fans. Per Kuentz staff requirement, we must leave the fans on at all times in the summer to reduce the load on the air conditioners. NOISE: Please try to be considerate of others but do realize that this is a social club and sometimes we get a little noisy. If the noise bothers your group, try sitting in the long back room where it tends to be less noisy. The most noise is experienced at tables on the dance floor where there is no carpet to help muffle the talking. PLAYERS NEEDED: There are flags available to use if you need another player at your table. Let s welcome new members into our groups. Women s Club Members Only Beginners Mah Jongg Class A new class is beginning on Wednesday, October 10th. Classes will be for three weeks, on Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9 am 11:30am. Class dates: October: 10; 11; 17; 19*; 24; 25 Beginning on October 17th, Geri invites previous students to join in during the actual game playing. Increase your knowledge and confidence playing the game under her helpful guidance. Please bring a game set for your play. The sign-up sheet is on the credenza. Class size will be limited. Waitlist sheet is available. When signing up for this class, please enter your name and phone number. If a name is crossed out do not put your name in that space. Sign up on the waitlist. Geri will call people on the waitlist if there are openings; she may even call the morning of the first class. Note: October 19th is a Friday. The club is closed on Oct. 18th. 6
