First impressions Scorpa 280 and 125 Whilst on a short family holiday in New Zealand I had the opportunity to ride the new Scorpa Trials bikes, the Sherco engine 280cc and 125cc Scorpas. One of the bonuses of having a son-in-law who imports Trials bikes is that any time we visit there is always something new to ride, and since the new Scorpas had arrived a couple of days before we got there, it was an ideal opportunity to give Brendon s demo bikes a run. I must add that New Zealand has some spectacular trials country, and the property that we went to, only twenty minutes from Renwick, was a great place to test the bikes, with a rocky creek with running water, large earth banks (an old dam) and then a trail ride with creek and high bank sections all the way to the top of a hill with views to the sea. Having always had a preference for larger capacity trials bikes I did most of my riding on the 280 machine. The first thing that I noticed is that the choke lever is a lot easier to use than my Yamaha engined Scorpa, starting is quite easy and the bike, on the whole, feels very similar to previous models, a very easy bike to hop on and ride. The suspension, while different in the rear (a shorter shock extension), still has a very positive and plush feel to it. This makes it very easy to hold a line in the rocky creek sections we were riding and in the tight turns, the front wheel tracked well without trying to push off line, very much like the Yamaha engine Scorpa does. The 280cc engine has power to burn, very smooth down low and power that just builds as you pour on the gas. Brendon ably demonstrated this later on in the week when we were on a four-wheeler ride at Kaikoura, tackling 15 metre high creek banks with only a five metre run up, real heart in mouth stuff, the bike did it with ease. (But Brendon had to work!) For me, who usually rides most sections in first gear, I found that on the 280 I was doing most of the sections in second, it just seemed more comfortable to me, but another rider testing the bike with us preferred to use first. The 125cc Scorpa was a whole new thing to me, I haven t really ridden a small capacity trials bike since the 1970s, and even then it was an over-bored 172 Montessa that rode more like a 250cc machine. The surprise was that the 125 hauled my bulk up anything that I pointed it at, it had an off-idle stumble at first but a little tuning fixed that. Me stalling it on too many occasions we couldn t fix, too used to larger engines. With the frame and running gear identical to the 280cc machine, (it s hard to pick which one is which from the right side) the 125 feels a smaller bike, it may be a little less weight but it has a completely different feel when riding it, still with the same great Scorpa suspension. All in all a couple of bikes that are a delight to ride, and should be easy to live with. Richard Marken
Christmas Festive Fun Trial THE Christmas Festive Fun trial was held on 14/11/2010. Those who attended were treated to such delights as the super skinny balance log, wheelie section, the log ladder bridge from hell, a bit of a hillside section, trials basketball including a super tight slalom whilst holding a basketball, trials soccer, the barrel push, trials limbo, and a bit of a bash at a bank. All the trials fun was followed by a great feed, and social gathering and the presentation from the club championships.

MTCQ Sign On Day Sunday 27 th February 2011 is the date to be at the Undullah property for our sign on day. I ve just attached the sup regs and entry forms below. There is sure to be some interesting riding and a chance to get warmed up (or in my case, worn out) for the new season. There will be a free sausage sizzle lunch. While there is still plenty of time, it might be wise to see if you can still find your bike in the back of the shed, dust off the cobwebs, clean off last year s dirt, add some fresh fuel. Who am I kidding? My bike hasn t seen daylight since last year either. Working Bee There will be a working bee a week before the sign on day, to clean up and prepare for it. This will be on Sunday 20 th Feb with an 8:00 AM start. Many hands make light work, and all help will be appreciated.
