Recreational Sports-Physical/Neurological/Visual All recreational programs are open to both individuals with and without a permanent physical disability and/or vision loss. The programs are planned, coordinated and provided by Turnstone staff member, Kevin Hughes. At your initial visit on becoming an active participant, you will be asked to complete an intake form. To register for a program you MUST contact Turnstone s receptionist by visiting them at either of our main desk (Peds, ADS or Plassman) or by calling the main number at (260) 483-2100. Here are some grant opportunities that can assist you in obtaining your own custom made adaptive equipment in recreation, sport and/or for everyday life. Here are some of the things this grant supports: Van Lifts, House Ramps, Adaptive Car Seats, Starlifts, Power Soccer guards along with any sports equipment (like cycles). Applications are accepted year round. Individuals with Visual Impairments: If you are blind or visually impaired we would LOVE to chat with you. With the addition of the Men s National Goalball team living and training on our campus we re blessed to have these ambassadors with various levels of visual impairments helping with many of our programs. Our programs that are marked in RED have specific adaptations to allow all individuals with various levels of vision loss the ability to compete at a high level. Cycling Come and tryout these sets of wheels! We have handcycles, recumbent trikes, along with tandem bikes that are geared towards individuals with visual impairments, available for use. New participants must schedule an appointment to determine the proper bike. This program is offered weekly. All participants must reserve a time to participate. It s exactly how it sounds. This recreational activity is open to both individuals who utilize either a power or manual chair. A chair will be provided for those who RSVP in advance. July 6, 13, 20 Thurs 6-7 p.m. 14+ $20 Boccia The sport is played on a flat, smooth surface, where players must throw or roll colored balls as close as possible to a white target ball, known as the jack. The player, pair or team with the most balls near the jack is the winner. Individuals can either throw, kick or use a ramp to propel the ball which makes this sport accessible to many. Lead instructor will be Bob Walda who has 30 + years of coaching basketball (including coaching Turnstone s Prep wheelchair basketball team). The camp will include both on and off the court instruction along with a fitness component. This opportunity is open to both the recreational and competitive individual. This Paralympic Sports is instructed by a certified table tennis coach. A great sport that's very adaptable. For individuals who have limited grip we can tape the paddle to their hand along with other customizable adaptions. Individuals can play either standing up or in a wheelchair. Goalball Two time Paralympian, Daryl Walker, will train and guide you in this sport tailored for individuals with visual impairments. This program is also open to those without a visual impairment as well. These individuals may participate by playing or helping on the sidelines. Competitive Sports -Physical/Neurological/Visual We have several competitive sports opportunities available, each with their own criteria and program fees. All competitive sports are open to all individuals with a permanent physical disability and/or vision loss. The competitive sports are ran by many different coaches, who are knowledgeable and passionate about the sport they are coaching. When on a competitive team, individuals will need to have the ability to travel to away tournaments. Turnstone does not provide transportation to any tournament. We ll be utilizing the St. Mary s River starting near the iconic Wells Street Bridge. Rowing instruction will be led by Concordia High School rowing coach & their athletes who have all been trained by the Louisville, KY program which is considered the top adaptive rowing organization in the USA. Sled Hockey consist of athletes using sleds and two sticks with pics to propel themselves around the ice rink. This is a team sport where five individuals and one goalie compete against teams. Power Soccer This is soccer with a fun twist. Athletes use their strike force chairs to push an enlarged soccer ball down the court into the opponents goal.
