We had a couple of great workdays on January 21 st and February 4 th to set up targets, repair the floor of the outhouse, begin the rebuild of the train engine and repair/build new loading/unloading tables. We have also purchased 20 targets from the Alamo Area Moderators which were delivered by Bison Jim on February 8 th. You will begin to see these square and triangle targets popping up on various stages. I cannot over-emphasize my appreciation to all those cowboys and cowgirls who came out to help. I am always impressed by the number of members willing to come out and participate in the hands-on maintenance and improvement of the range. We have another workday coming up on March 4 th so if you have some time we welcome your participation too. We have 70+ shooters signed up for Comancheria Days 2014 and the entries keep coming in every day. There is an ad in the February issue of The Cowboy Chronicle TM. We are hoping to see 150 or more shooters at the match this year and I hope you are planning on joining us. In going through the club inventory, we have found that we have a number of Texican Rangers items still available for sale such as caps, mugs, etc. We have set up a table in the HQ with samples of those items that you can purchase when passing through during match registration. We anticipate that additional items like T-shirts will become available to celebrate our 20 years of being a cowboy action shooting club. Just wait until you see the new logo! I have mentioned in past issues of this newsletter that I was anticipating discussions about scoring systems. But so far it does not seem to be a hot topic. The Board discussed the fact that the membership had voted a number of years ago to retain the total time scoring system that the Texican Rangers have used for years and voted to not pursue any change. If you have an opinion to the contrary, let me know it but in the meantime the issue is officially dropped. (continued on page 2) 1

But only three of them will result in rule changes this year. Accidental closing of actions on long guns after use on a stage will no longer be cause for calling the shooter back to close the action. The shooter will be required, at the conclusion of the stage, to show the RO or a spotter that the gun was indeed clear. If it was not then appropriate penalties would apply. But until such determination is made no one but the shooter is allowed to handle the gun. Straightened triggers on lever actions are now allowed as are Bisley hammers and grip frames on pistols not originally equipped with them. But the retrieval of dropped rounds is still considered illegally acquired because the proposal was approved only by a simple majority of TGs instead of the 2/3s approval required for the rule to be changed. I would like to remind you that if you have any ideas for the website, now would be a good time to bring them up. It is your range, your club and your website. See any of the officers but especially Agarita Annie. Results of the matches held so far for 2014 are now posted on the website. We tried six (6) stages at the Saturday and Sunday matches in January and then again at the Saturday match in February. But on Sunday, February 9 th, we had enough shooters to stand up one large posse, and the number of shooters combined with the time required to run through the stages caused me to call the match short at five (5) stages. Some shooters on Saturday expressed the opinion that the stages were too complex. Apparently that complexity, although I did try to simplify two of the stages for Sunday, contributed to the time it took to shoot the stages. I think in the interest of uniformity, we will stick to a maximum of five (5) stages at monthly matches. This will also allow us to offer the opportunity to shoot long range. Quintana has offered to run long range side matches at the monthly matches after lunch. He is setting up the range to allow both big bore long range and pistol caliber not-so-long range shooting. He will be opening the Long Range on Saturday, March 8 th after the monthly match. So all you Quigley wannabees can break out the Sharps and Hi-Walls and limber them up for Comancheria Days. Quintana will also take on the task of running the Long Range Side Match at Comancheria Days 2014. Muchas gracias, Quintana, mi amigo! Finally, I know it seems kind of early to be bringing up annual elections of the club Officers but we have to begin thinking about them. According to the club By-Laws, all nominations of candidates for the various offices must be submitted not later than March 31 st. And that deadline is just around (Continued on page 3) 2

HOWDY, TEXICAN RANGERS (continued from page 2) the corner. So the door is officially opened for you to submit names of anyone you would like to nominate (including yourself) for any office The officers consist of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Range Master. Fatal Star has indicated that, because of increasing family responsibilities, she will be unable to serve again as Vice President or any other office. We will miss her participation and the continuity she has brought to the organization of the club. The names of all nominated candidates will be announced in the April and May issues of the Texican Star and the elections will be held at the June 14 th monthly match. So for now amigos, stay warm, stay thirsty and we will shoot again next month on the second weekend, March 8 and 9, rain or shine, and then a Wild Bunch Match again on March 29. Texican Rangers, let s ride! Yuma Jack I do intend to nominate myself for President again and will be inquiring of the rest of the present Board members as to their intentions. ELECTION OF OFFICERS Below find the information on Elections as it appears in the Club s Bylaws: ANNUAL ELECTION OF OFFICERS: Elections are conducted on the first Main Match day in JUNE, will be completed before the Shooter s Meeting, and results of the election will be announced during the Shooter s Meeting. Unexpected delays due to weather, declared emergency, or other Acts of God will be handled on an individual basis as deemed appropriate by the majority of the Executive Committee. Official Notice of Annual Elections must be published in the Monthly Newsletter published in April and May, or by email to members. NOMINATIONS: Club members may nominate themselves or others as Candidates for office, but must announce the nomination to the Officers by the last day of March. Announcement of Candidates for office will be published in the April and May Newsletters. If any Member has an objection to a candidacy, then that objection must be submitted to and discussed with the Executive Committee within five days of the first publication of the Candidate s name and office. Candidates are encouraged to write an article for the April and/or May newsletters stating their qualifications for the purpose of informed voting by the Members. If you are interested in serving as an Officer (President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and/or Range Master) of the Texican Rangers please announce your nomination to the Officers by the last day of March. If you shoot with the Alamo Area Moderators, we have been informed that they have lost their range. They are currently looking for a new range. Please stay tuned to their website for more information. 3

TEXAS STATE RIFLE ASSOCIATION STATE COWBOY MATCH Last month I announced that the Texas State Rifle Association (TSRA) 2014 Cowboy Action State Match was being held at Old Fort Parker, January 31 st February 2 nd, 2014. Since I had only shot at Fort Parker once before, and since I am a Life Member of TSRA, I decided to make the trip to attend the match. I also wanted to see how those matches were conducted because we have been talking about hosting a TSRA Regional Cowboy Action Match for 2015. The match was hosted by the Old Fort Parker Patriots and ably run by prominent SASS members Texas Ghost (SASS #50125), Shotglass (SASS# 17153) and Spur Roberts (SASS# 14625) who are all TSRA Directors. There was a Wild Bunch Match on Friday as well as a warm-up match which was really needed on Sunday, but more on that in a minute. The main match consisted of 10 stages with six on Saturday and four on Sunday. As expected by anyone familiar with shooting at Fort Parker the targets were big but not as close as usual at the request of TSRA. But on many of the stages distances are limited. Nevertheless, the shooting was fast and furious. Saturday was a beautiful day, mostly in the 60s and sunny. An intermittent light breeze helped those of use using real powder as opposed to that faddish smokeless stuff. The scenarios were all related, sometimes very loosely, to the Second Amendment concept. But the shooting sequences were often complex and thought provoking even if the subject of the scenario was not. They required some concentration to avoid procedurals. That concentration was less of a challenge on Saturday than on Sunday. (I brought back some of the shooting sequences for the club match on February 8 and 9 just to let others get a taste. Some folks didn t take a fancy to the flavors.) I was doing pretty well up until the sixth stage of the day when I started to fall apart. But shooting on a posse with the likes of Spur Roberts and Cowtown Scout helped keep the pace and the fun levels up. But then came Sunday! Well I did go prepared for wet but I did not go prepared for cold and it was both. It was in the high 20s, raining with a little sleet thrown it and windy. Six, shooting in the Frontiersman category, kept running to the outhouse to load his Ruger Old Army cap and ball pistols. Doc O Bay and I hung on to the bitter end but Big Iron Patnode threw in the towel (a wet one at that) on Sunday morning and went home without completing the match. And he was not alone. Out of around 100 shooters who signed up, probably 25% left Sunday morning with an incomplete scorecard. All SASS categories were honored even if only one shooter registered for a category but some categories saw no awards because of the desertion rate driven by the weather. The awards were presented on Sunday after the match. The new President of TSRA, Dallas Stoudenmire (aka David Stroud), spoke about the present status of the organization as our only lobbyist-supported voice in Austin. TSRA has put some pressure on the NRA to return some support at the state level and it is beginning to see some results. But sadly the TSRA membership does not well represent the population of Texas gun owners. I am proud to have been a survivor capturing a first place as Frontier Cartridge Gunfighter. But I am also even more proud to have been able to help support our State organization in its fight to maintain our Second Amendment Right to bear arms. Also to that end, I did commit to Texas Ghost that the Texican Rangers would host a TSRA Cowboy Action Regional Match on August 29, 2014. So put that date on your calendar! 4

MESSAGE FROM THE MATCH DIRECTOR I wanted everyone to know that shooters will be able to purchase misses and procedural tickets during Comancheria Days 2014. This year we will sell up to 2 misses and 1 procedural per day for the Main Match. Each miss will be $5.00 and each procedural $10.00. We will make the tickets available in the office. When you register be sure to ask about them in case we forget to offer them to you (that s not likely to happen but when things get a bit hectic, we may miss this opportunity)! Please note the guidelines below: Tickets will be color coded one color for Friday, a different color for Saturday. Tickets will be available for purchase before the match each day. Maximum purchase is 2 misses and 1 procedural per day. Misses and procedurals are non-transferrable. Miss/procedural must be applied before leaving the stage you just completed. Each ticket must be initialed as well as marked with the stage to which you are applying it. M Comancheria Days 2014 Shooting Iron Miller P Comancheria Days 2014 5

ON THE RANGE Nueces Slim Just wanted to thank everyone once again for a great workday! We had a total of seventeen folks show up at the ranch to work on the 17 th..and work is what you all did. Our TO DO list is getting shorter and shorter thanks to the hard work of each of you. We welcomed a newcomer to our workdays, Uncle Nick Wilson. We showed Nick no mercy and immediately sent him to the Outhouse to work! Nick and Gee Pee tackled finishing the floor in the old outhouse and thanks to their hard work we now have new vinyl tiles to walk on and no holes in the floor to fall thru! Thanks guys, I know that was lots of time spent on your hands and knees. Grouchy Spike, Marshall Willy and El Paso Lee continued their prior workday attack of the train. Thanks to their herculean efforts we now have a train that looks like a train and isn t just a crumbled mass on the ground. The old Texican Express is riding mighty high on her wheels headed past the Golden Spike to shoots on down the rails. Yuma Jack, Shooting Iron Miller, Sheriff Robert Love and Dirty Dog Dale spent the entire workday getting the range in order for Comancheria Days. The targets we bought from the Alamo Area Moderators were moved out onto the stages to replace some of our smaller targets. All targets were positioned and repositioned until they were just right and distances were checked and in some cases rechecked. Thanks for all their hard work in getting all those targets placed just right. Quintana, after he finished his work on the Long Range set-up, assisted in the target placement task. I also saw Quintana doing a great job on cleaning up the range of old shotgun shells, thanks for that! Bross asked what we needed done and Annie mentioned that the door to the Emporium drags when you try to open it. Little did Bross know what he was getting himself into! After removing the door and revamping it we can all now enter the Emporium with ease and no dragging! We all thank you Bross but Agarita Annie is really excited. Culebra Blaze and Newt Ritter took the Range TO DO list and off they headed. Every time I looked up they were tackling something else on the list..trees got trimmed, work on the Dentist Office got done to include a new shooting platform, horses got painted and lots of other items on the list got taken off the list, thanks guys! Madam Ella Moon worked in the office getting the computers set-up for CD and making sure we are ready to enter scores when the time comes. Madam also inventoried the items that we have had donated for both the Silent Auction, raffle and for shooter prizes for CD, this will really help Culebra Blaze who has been tasked with keeping up with all of this. And last but far from least was Respirator Man, aka Howdy Nabor. Howdy arrived at the ranch, headed to the area behind registration, put on his respirator, turned on the generator and he began a sprayin and he didn t stop. Not sure he even took off the respirator to eat and enjoy the fajita lunch! Howdy was a sprayin machine.he got most all of the remaining tables that Skyhawk Hans had not able to finish at the last workday done at this workday. I think we are down to only about 5-7 tables left to paint. Again, my thanks to everyone! 6

Name: Relationship: Phone: Cell: WAIVER I, the undersigned, will abide by the safety rules of SASS and the TEXICAN RANGERS, INC (hereafter referred to as TR) including the Club Rules while on Stieler Ranch. I recognize the inherent dangers of injury and/or death associated with Cowboy Action Shooting and will not handle or discharge firearm(s) in a manner that may be unsafe to others or me. I understand that the range is a cold range and that my firearms must be unloaded at all times unless I am on the firing line and under the supervision of a range officer. I am aware of the potentially injurious noise level associated with the discharge of firearms and the possibility of being struck by rebounding bullet particles. I will always wear eye protection both on and off the firing line, and insist that my guest(s) do likewise. I understand that ear protection is also recommended. I grant TR the right to use photographs of me participating in TR events or at the Stieler Ranch for any lawful purpose, including without limitation, printed and electronic content.
