12 th October 2011 Issue 3 11/12 RYDE ATHLETICS CENTRE INCORPORATED PO Box 3658 Marsfield 2122 www.ryde-athletics.org.au The Ryde Games Pentathlon coming soon! On Saturday 22 October we will be holding our annual Ryde Games Pentathlon. Each age group compete in sprints, middle distance, long jump and shot put. A multipoints system is applied to each athlete s results and then medals are awarded for 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd overall in each age group. To be eligible to get a medal the athlete must compete in every event. On the same day we run the Ryde 60mtr dash and athletes of all ages, including mums and dads are welcome to compete. We may even see our President out there running! To ensure the morning runs quickly and smoothly we needs lots of volunteers out on the field helping at the long jump pits, shot put circles and on the track. If you haven t tried one of these jobs before don t worry, give it a go and I m sure you ll find yourself having a good time and meeting new parents. Can all Age Managers please ensure Pentathlon results are handed in as soon as an event is finished so there isn t any delay in working out the final point scores and medal winners? First blue patches of the season. Some of our athletes don t muck around when it comes to setting off the season in a sizzling fashion. Chiara Lillis (U8G) told her dad she wanted to be the first blue patch recipient this year and she was! Also achieving their blue patches in only a few short weeks of competition (pictured below with Chiara) are Luke Jubb (U7B), Ben Nogajski (U11B) and Jett Tall (U9B). Well done and good luck for the season. 1

Thank you Elly & Girvan and welcome Paul & Carla The Committee would like to extend a big thank you to Elly Osada who has filled the big role of Club Treasurer for the past few years. We welcome Paul Simula who will take on the role assisted by Fiona Court. We also extend another big thank you to Girvan Malcolm who has wrapped, strapped and tended to our little athletes for as long as I can remember, and welcome Carla Matheson, as our new first aid officer. Without the generous contribution of people like Elly, Paul, Fiona, Carla and Girvan our club won t exist. Your efforts, past and future, are greatly appreciated. How to help at event etiquette I ve been asked to remind people that if you are signed on at an event then you should stay until all the age groups have completed that event. We have had a few complaints that people are up and abandoning their posts when their children have finished leaving some events much under resourced. Most events have shade tents nearby so we d ask for your children to wait until your duty has finished. If you must leave early then please ensure that a replacement helper is located before you leave by asking one of the committee members near the club house to help find someone. Thank you. What you need to do with your club number With State Relays not far away it is time to check that your children s uniform meets all the Little A requirements. As noted in Footprint No.1 for the season we can no longer display the Coke logo on the back of our uniforms. So if you have an old 38 you will need to take the scissors to the top of it and cut it down to remove the Coke logo. It may look a little bit of an odd shape but this is what we need to do. 2011 Introduction to Coaching Courses If you haven t got a No.38 as yet then our Uniform Officer, Louise Badaoui will be going round our groups over the next few weeks to hand out cut down 38 s to those athletes who will be doing If you State are interested Relays. Shade shelter/ equipment roster please help when it is your turn Each week parents of one age group, e.g. Under 10 boys and girls, will be asked to assist in putting up and putting away the shade shelters and helping with equipment. Under this system each age group will be on shade shelter/equipment duty a maximum of three times each season. Please ensure that when you re on duty that you are at the grounds by 7.45am. Reminders will be provided each Saturday confirming which age group is responsible for shade shelters/equipment the following week and many hands will make light work. Merit awards are given out after every four weeks of normal Saturday competition. There are separate awards for most improved on track and field and an encouragement award. The method of selecting athletes is determined by a points system calculated by the age managers, where athletes receive one point for each event they have entered and completed, or attempted to complete, and an additional two points for improving their time or distance. These awards are presented before or during competition on the appropriate Saturday morning. The first awards were made on Saturday October 8 th. Trans Tasman entries closing soon Last newsletter featured information on the upcoming Trans Tasman trials. Looking around on a Saturday it is clear we have some terrific talent in our under 11 and under 12 age groups. So why not give the Trials a go? It would be great to see some of our Ryde athletes representing NSW at the Challenge next January. Entry form with entry fees must reach the Little A Association office by close of business Wednesday October 19th, 2011. Entries must be submitted online or on the manual entry form. Online entry form is at www.littleathletics.com.au. Sally Pearson & Dani Samuels got their start in Little Athletics 5
IGA Docket Competition back for another year Can we improve on our 2 nd place last season? Remember to get your family and friends too to collect any dockets from any IGA around the State and bring them on a Saturday morning and lodge in the box out the front of our club room. Fund raising like this helps pay for new equipment for our athletes. So let s get those dockets rolling in! Good Luck to our qualifiers for NSW Primary School State Carnival Zoe Latham, Stephanie Volos, Amy Court, Sam Hain, Ben Nogajski Hannah Tall, Timothy Blowes & Julia Kelland.. Reminder only Age Managers & Age Mgr Assistants are allowed out with the athletes At the start of each season we need to remind people that only Age Managers and their designated Assistants are allowed to walk around with the Age Group. We have noted some parents following age groups around and this will not be permitted for a number of reasons. First only people signed on at the table are allowed on the field for insurance purposes. If you are an Age Manager or designated Assistant Age Manager please ensure that you have signed on at the Age Manager s table. Second the Age Manager needs to concentrate on minding the children. He or she doesn t need distraction from parents wanting to discuss their child, If you have something to discuss with your Age Manager please do it before or after competition. Third parent not working as Age or Assistant Age Managers should be signed on to help on the field or track. Finally, think of the Age Manager as being like your child s teacher at school. They are in charge of them for the time they are competing. You would hardly follow your child s teacher around the class room the whole day so please don t follow your child s age manager around the track. Also good luck to all our competitors at NSW All Schools Field & Track Championships at Homebush from 11-16 th October - Nick & Sarah Kelland, Nicola Bowtell, Nina Osada-Phornsiri, Cameron Pappas, Maddy Bergfield, Sachi Kayama, Will Medway, Jackson Kang & Kate Spencer.
