Texas Tech Red Raiders 2011 MLB Draft Notes Updated: August 16, 2011 TEXAS TECH HAS PRODUCED 123 MLB DRAFT/FREE AGENT SELECTIONS The Texas Tech baseball program began in 1926 and played baseball until 1929 before starting back up in 1954 where it has since played baseball in 58 consecutive seasons. Since 1962, there have been 123 Major League Baseball Draft or free agent selections. There have been 105 draft picks and 18 free agent selections. There have been 42 draft picks/free agents over the last eight seasons, an average of at least five players drafted per season. BREAKDOWN OF RED RAIDER DRAFT PICKS Texas Tech has had 105 draft picks since 1969. Overall, there has been at least one Red Raider drafted in 34 MLB Drafts, with 23 drafts containing at least two Texas Tech players. The 2011 MLB Draft saw four Red Raiders drafted and one sign as a free agent, which matches the programs most since having seven draft picks in 2006. It is the second straight year Tech has had five drafted/signed. Six times in the last eight years there have been at least five Texas Tech players drafted/sign as free agents. Draft Rounds: Players Selected 1st-10th Round: 30 11th-20th Round: 28 21st-30th: 28 31st-40th: 13 41st-50th: 6 CONSISTENCY IN THE DRAFT There has been at least one Tech player drafted/signed free agent contract in 24 consecutive drafts (1988-2011) and in 29 of the last 30 drafts dating back to 1982. The only draft during the past 30 years where a Tech player was not selected/signed free agent was in 1987. In fact, during the past 24 years there have been multiple Red Raiders drafted/signed free agent deals. TEXAS TECH HEAD COACH DAN SPENCER - MENTORED 64 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DRAFT PICKS SINCE 1997 Dan Spencer has had numerous success stories in his college baseball coaching career. Among them is coaching 64 players in his time at Oregon State (1997-2007) and Texas Tech (2008-Present) that have been selected/signed free agent in the MLB Draft. He coached 45 players at Oregon State and 19 players at Texas Tech that have been drafted or who have signed free agent. Overall Spencer has coached three first-round picks, 14 players who have gone in the top five rounds and 26 players who have been drafted in the top 10 rounds. In only four years at Tech, Spencer has worked with 12 pitchers that have been drafted/signed free agent - including four top-10 round selections. Spencer has coached eight players (7 at Oregon State) that have since made their MLB debuts. TECH IN ELITE COMPANY AMONG BIG 12 PROGRAMS Since the first Big 12 baseball season in 1997, Texas Tech is one of only three programs in the conference to have at least one player drafted in the top 14 rounds of the draft every season. The Red Raiders join Oklahoma State and Texas A&M as the only programs that have had a top-14 round pick every year since 1997. HIGHEST DRAFTED RED RAIDER - DONALD HARRIS (1ST ROUND, 5TH OVERALL - 1989) Former Red Raider and Texas Rangers outfielder Donald Harris is the highest drafted Texas Tech player as Harris was selected fifth overall in the 1989 MLB Draft by Texas. Harris is the only first-rounder in Texas Tech history while 18 Red Raiders have gone in the top five rounds. Seven Tech players have been selected in the top 100 overall picks, including 2010 second-round draft pick Chad Bettis (Colorado Rockies - 2nd round, No. 76 overall). Texas Tech Top 100 Overall Selections 1989 - Donald Harris, OF (Texas Rangers, 1st Round - No. 5 overall) 1996 - Matt Miller, LHP (Detroit Tigers, 2nd Round - No. 41 overall) 1994 - Ryan Nye, RHP (Philadelphia Phillies, 2nd Round - No. 57 overall) 2010 - Chad Bettis, RHP (Colorado Rockies, 2nd Round - No. 76 overall) 2008 - Roger Kieschnick, OF (San Francisco Giants, 3rd Round - No. 82 overall) 2008 - Zach Stewart, RHP (Cincinnati Reds, 3rd Round - No. 84 overall) 1999 - Josh Bard, C (Colorado Rockies, 3rd Round - No. 100 overall) RED RAIDERS DRAFTED/SIGNED BY 28 MLB ORGANIZATIONS In the history of Texas Tech baseball, there has been at least one Red Raider drafted or signed by 28 of 30 Major League Baseball organizations. Only the Minnesota Twins and the newly-founded Arizona Diamondbacks (1998) have not selected or signed a Texas Tech player. Overall, 64 players have gone to National League teams with 59 players drafted/signed by American League clubs. The National League Central (28) is the division that has drafted/signed the most Red Raiders while the hometown Texas Rangers (9) and Kansas City Royals (9) are the organization that have taken the most Tech players. Although neither organization has drafted a Red Raider since 2007 (SS Kyle Martin, 29th round - Kansas City) and the Rangers have drafted only one Tech player (OF Michael Mask, 32nd round - 2004) during the last 19 years. Both clubs have signed Red Raiders to free agent contracts since 2001. The Houston Astros have taken eight Tech players while the Cincinnati Reds and San Diego Padres have drafted/signed seven Texas Tech players. The only organization that has drafted a Tech player that doesn t currently exist is the Houston Colt.45 s, as they signed the first-ever Red Raider when Chuck Harrison signed with the soon-to-be Houston Astros in 1962. The Colt.45 s were established in 1962 and then became the Astros three years later.
