Golfers are advised to take appropriate action to prevent heat stress including wearing a wide brimmed hat and carrying sufficient water to maintain hydration. All Golfers should consider their own health conditions before participating in Club Events. Year of Foundation 1937 Year of VGA affiliation 1941 Founding Members (1937) J. Doak, F. Drake, A. McKindley, F. & R. Howley, J.Ryan, Mr. & Mrs. G. Knight Life Members Bob Gunn, Garry Harrop, Joe Holland, David Lubke, Val Smith, Ian Martin, Wendy Nielsen Current Club Champions: Men: Lex Johnstone Ladies: Ruth Iser Club Champion: Lex Johnstone 16 times Garry Harrop* 8 times Ron Baetge 8 times Since 1973 Lady Champion: Loretta Prowse 10 times Helen Lindrea 7 times Trish Shanahan 7 times * (Garry also served 2 years as President and 5 years as Captain and was the second Life Member of the Axedale Golf Club) A Brief History of the Axedale Golf Club Although there are some references of golf being played in the Axedale district as early as the 1890s, golf was first played on the site of the current course, The Axedale Racecourse and Recreational Reserve, in 1937 when 8 founding members formed the Axedale Golf Club. The inaugural President, Mr. J. Doak, proclaimed the 22 men and 14 lady members would be required each Saturday from the 24th April 1937 for working bees until the course is in (playing) order. The membership fee for that first year was 3 shillings. The course consisted of 9 sand scrape holes surrounded by low wire fences to protect the sands from grazing stock (A pastoral lease was current on the reserve at this time any cutting of grass was prohibited). The fledgling club also had to contend with frequent flooding of the course by the adjacent Campaspe River. Despite these setbacks the Axedale Golf Club competed each weekend during the winter season from 1937 until 1956. However, by 1955, membership had fallen to 10 members and 5 associates. In May of 1956, following another flood in which the scrapes were again ruined and the fairways strewn with debris, the club and the course were abandoned. The club was reformed in 1973 by a band of enthusiastic locals who met in the 7

Axedale Public Hall. A new layout of 9 scrapes was created on the same site as the original course, although two alternate sites were also considered. In the years since, the layout has undergone many changes and additions. The first clubhouse was a galvanised iron shed alongside the present 7th fairway, originally used as a pavilion for the racetrack. In 1980, when a new clubhouse was built several hundred metres away, the course was again altered to make the first hole a more convenient starting point. A further 5 holes were subsequently constructed across the Eppalock Road during the early 1980 s and by 1989 the club had a complete automated watering system in place, allowing members to play all year round. The course was converted from sand to grass greens over a 2 year period along the design plans of Kevin Hartley, with the earthworks being done by Axedale member Butch Dunlop, and numerous working bees when members laid drainage, spread and levelled topsoil, and seeded the new greens. VGA Vice President and local Bendigo identity George Body officially opened the 18 greens on the 21st of April 1996. The Minister for Sport, The Honourable Tom Reynolds MLA, officially opened extensions to the clubhouse in 1998. In 2005, negotiations were completed with the Coliban Water Authority for recycled water to be utilised by the Axedale Golf Club, involving a major upgrade of the clubs watering system. The negotiations were quite long and complex being completed by an energetic and enthusiastic group of members led very capably by club member Graeme Rooke. Today the Axedale Golf Club boasts a membership of over 300 players and is one of the best courses in the Bendigo District. 8 Etiquette Members are asked to familiarise themselves with the Rules of Golf, and to pay particular attention to the following paragraphs. Observance will add to the pleasure of all members on the course. Sometimes these injunctions are not honoured as they should be owing to perhaps lack of thought, or to intense concentration by the player upon his own game, to the exclusion of the welfare and enjoyment of others. 1. All persons must wear correct footwear on the course. 2. No one should stand close to or directly behind the ball or hole, nor move or talk when a player is making a stroke. 3. Whichever player has the honour, should be permitted to play before his opponent tees his ball. 4. There should be no play until the player/group in front is out of range. 5. Upon the completion of a hole, players should immediately leave the green. 6. Any turf cut or displaced should be immediately replaced and pressed down. 7. Players should smooth out all marks in the bunkers before leaving same. 8. Players should at all times play without undue delays. Slower matches always call faster matches through.

The Game Golf is unique for 2 main reasons: GOLF PROTOCOL 1. Golf is a game of honour and honesty your integrity is at stake every time you play. You are your own referee, umpire and judge. 2. Every arena is different and unique in its own way. Whether you are playing football, cricket, tennis, etc. the playing field is basically the same. Consequently rules of golf are many, but they are designed to be relevant to all courses. It is your responsibility to know the rules and to apply them in all circumstances. Excusing a breach of a rule by claiming we re not playing for sheep stations is unacceptable. Things expected of you Golf is a very social game. Meeting new people on a level playing field is one of its great attractions. Anti social behaviour is rare and should not be tolerated. Correct attire There is a dress code printed in the program book and on the board outside the clubhouse. Maintenance of the course You are expected to carry a sand bucket at all times to repair your divots and other unrepaired turf damage. Also always carry a pug repairer in your pocket to repair greens. Take pride in the course don t litter. Always feel like you have left the course in a little better condition than before you started certainly not worse. If you have played a competition round, you are encouraged to stay for the presentation of trophies. Whilst this is sometimes not possible, the practice of consistently immediately leaving is considered antisocial and contrary to expected protocol. Etiquette There is an entire section at the start of the rules book on etiquette. A few comments 1. Who has the honour? At the start of a round, it will be the person with the lowest handicap. Thereafter, our Club adopts the principles and practice of ready golf as described in the Rules of Golf 2019. 2. When a playing partner is about to play, it is courteous to stand still and make no noise. 3. Make sure the area around you is clear of people before you take a practice swing and DO NOT aim practice swings at your playing partners. 4. Don t hit until the players in front are out of range. This will vary from player to player and is often difficult to judge on a strange course. Err on the side of caution. 9

Pace of Play Probably the most common fault with new players is that they tend to take too long between shots and to hit the ball There is no proven correlation between the quality of the shot and the amount of time the player stands over the ball. Always remember your place in the field is behind the group in front, NOT in front of the group behind! The pace you play should be independent of the number of hits per hole. No one wants or expects you to run around the course but a few simple tips will help you keep up. 1. Move smartly between shots. There is nothing to say you can t be in front of your playing partners provided you are aware when they re about to play, so you stand still and avoid being hit. 2. As you approach your ball you should be thinking about how you are going to play your next shot the line of your shot the club you ll use etc, Don t wait until it s your turn before preparing your shot. Be ready to pull the trigger as soon as your playing partner has hit. 3. Leave the green immediately you have finished the hole. Don t mark your cards until you reach the next tee. If you have the honour, make your way smartly to the tee and if it s safe, tee off without delay then you can mark your card whilst your playing partners tee off. 4. If you believe your ball may be lost or out of bounds, play a provisional ball. 5. If you or a member of your group has lost a ball, call through the following group. 6. Place your buggy between the green and the next tee. Keep your buggy close by during the play of each hole. If a staked tree interferes with your stance or area of your intended swing, the ball must be lifted without penalty and dropped not nearer the hole so the interference is avoided. This local rule change eliminates misinterpretation about planted versus non planted trees and the old under two club length in height rule. If it s staked you must drop away. If it s not play the ball as it lies. Get smart mortgage advice and the right loan When you re making big financial decisions, expert help can be invaluable. Course Maintenance The maintenance and upkeep of our course is not just the responsibility of our ground staff. It s the responsibility of everyone who plays at Axedale to help keep the course in top condition. This means you should always endeavour to leave the course in better condition than you found it. How can you achieve this? 1. Always carry a sandbucket. You should aim to refill your bucket every 2nd or 3rd hole. 2. Repair your divots on all areas of the course, including the tees. Replace your divots and cover with sand. Don t just fill in your divot hole with sand and leave your divot lying on the fairway. 3. Fill in all unrepaired divots and other holes with sand. 4. Repair all pitch marks you find on the green, not just your own. 5. Follow the signs directing you to walk around the fringe of the green not across them. 6. Smooth over foot marks, etc. and other roughed up areas in the bunkers. Leave the bunker rake in the bunker (in the centre/back). 7. Try not to step on the area of the green around the hole. This is not only common etiquette, but common sense. 8. Don t remove stakes defining specific course features e.g. hazards, GUR, etc. PROUDLY SUPPORTING CENTRAL VICTORIAN GOLF FOR OVER 30 YEARS PRINT STAMPS LARGE FORMAT PRINTING SIGNS BANNERS 20 22 DEBORAH STREET, BENDIGO P 03 5441 6600 F 03 5441 6330 www.bartnprint.com.au 39
