PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Another busy and fun filled month for Canada's largest magic circle. I would like to thank all the members of our execu=ve team including our directors for all their hard work and dedica=on to the VMC. This month is "Gimmick Card Night", so pull out our favourite deck of gimmicks and lets have some FUN! We also have a great opening ac=vity for the even=ng "Bar Magic with Rod Boss". Thanks to Rod for stepping forward and leading our workshop series. We have lots of upcoming events such as Children's Magician of the Year, "A world of Magic", Picnics, and lots of other fun, magical ac=vi=es. I would be remiss to men=on that Past Presidents Alex and Billy con=nue to give huge amounts of their =me and exper=se to the circle, thank you both for your con=nued leadership. Bryn

We listened to what our members want at our meetings - Magic, fun, learning, sharing, socializing, entertainment, and minimizing the business meeting. So, last month, we combined everything you wanted. We started the meeting with a lecture / workshop where there was an opportunity for learning and sharing. This was followed by an open jam session for sharing magic and socializing. Refreshments, followed by the competition where we all got to be entertained, followed by a brief business meeting summarizing the executive meeting. The response was extremely positive, so we will keep this format for all future meetings, except the special ones, such as the installation banquet, Auction night, and Christmas potluck. Upcoming Lecture / workshops include: April - Rod Boss on Bar Magic May - Rob Teszak on the Psychology of Magic June - Shawn Farquhar Please let me know if you would like to present a lecture / workshop, or have a topic you would like to see someone present.

Don t forget to get your tickets for the Children s Magician of the Year Competition at the Inlet Theatre on June 22. This promises to be a spectacular show as the World Renowned Magician, CHRIS CAPEHART will be entertaining in the second half of the CMOTY show. Tickets are a bargain at only $10 each. Bring all your friends and family too! That s not all. After the CMOTY show, Chris Capehart will be doing a full lecture for all the magicians at the same location. Make it a great day and buy tickets now, for both the CMOTY show and the lecture. We will be selling advertising on the CMOTY program. For all VMC members, you can place an ad before the end of April for an incredible 25% off the regular price. Contact Rod Boss to place an ad, but hurry so you won t miss the 25% discounted price. Quite a few spots have been sold already!

March Report By: Dennis Chan The March meeting started off with a workshop on the ambitious card by Henry Tom. During the workshop Henry demonstrated and explained some of the moves and techniques used in this classic piece of card magic. Well done Henry. The competition for this month was for the Cecil Ackery trophy. This trophy is awarded in recognition in comedy magic performed by an adult member. The competitors for the Cecil Ackery trophy were Ed Stehr, David Yoo and Rod Boss. Bryn Williams read the rules. Yoosik Oum, our competition chairman tallied the scores. Bryn told jokes and stories in between the acts to keep the competition flowing. Rod Boss was the winner of the Cecil Ackery trophy for 2018. Congratulations to Rod and to the rest of the competitors. During the business portion of the meeting Bryn mentioned that the 2018 installation banquet was a huge success. Everyone who attended was happy with the location, food, service and the performance by Chris Funk. There was also a possibility of a purchase of a new sound system. The Children's Magician of the Year competition for 2018 will take place on Friday, June 22, at the Inlet theatre in Port Moody. Rod Boss is in charge of putting the Children's Magician of the Year programme together. The competition is for the Wilf Rutherford trophy. Special guest Chris Capehart will be there to close the show. After his performance, Chris will be doing a lecture. Be sure to get your tickets for both the show and lecture as it will be a great evening of magic. Billy Hsueh mentioned that the World Gala of Magic will be held on Friday, September 7, through to Tuesday, September 11. The featured performers are Murray Hatfield and Teresa, Juliana Chen, Wayne Houchin, Kevin James, Ed Alonzo, Aaron Crow and Claudius Specht. They will be performing at the Vancouver Playhouse. All the Vancouver Magic Circle trophies are housed at Dennis Chan's home. Rod Boss is in charge of seeing that the trophies are kept in good condition and that repairs will be done as needed. Scott Jansen is doing some physical repairs on the Cecil Ackery trophy. Many thanks to Rod Boss for spending some time and money polishing up the Wilf Rutherford trophy. It looks great! Thanks Rod. The club's annual picnic will be held at William Shelly Park in Vancouver for which there is a contest and trophy named after him. Location is 1500 east 8th avenue and Woodland, near the Broadway sky train station. Members were also reminded of the PCAM convention in Bakersfield, California. The dates are from Thursday, August 9 through to Monday, 12. Many thanks to guest Tim Mustart for donating an activity TV magic DVD to the club's library. This is a DVD for children ages seven and up. Dave Carlson brought several dozen rosemary rocksalt bagels for the members to take home. His daughter, Brianna works in a bagel factory. Thanks Dave and Brianna. Bryn Williams provided the refreshments for the evening. Graham Kita sold raffle tickets. John Stenning was the winner if the 50/50 draw. Alex Seaman, Bryn Williams, Henry Tom, and Graham Kita took photos of the evening's events. There were 33 members and 15 guests in attendance. Dennis Chan Graham Kita
