For Immediate Release: February 4, 2004 Stanford Signs 12 To National Letters-of-Intent in Football Stanford University announced today the signing of 12 student-athletes to National Letters-of-Intent to play football and attend Stanford University in the Fall of 2004. Head coach Buddy Teevens, now in his third season at Stanford, said he is pleased with the class, which includes some of the most coveted prep prospects in the nation. "Our class of 12 recruits is small in numbers, but very solid," said Teevens. "We were able to fill positional needs with talented student-athletes who we feel will contribute relatively early in their career. We needed depth on the offensive line and at tight end, and we feel we were quite productive in that area," he said. "Another area of need was cover cornerback," said Teevens, "and we filled that with two very talented players. Depth at fullback and running back and a speed linebacker were also important areas for us. Overall, this is a very solid class that we feel will make a positive contribution to the Stanford football program," said Teevens. Among the 12-member class, seven are offensive players (four lineman, one running back, fullback and wide receiver), three are defensive players (two backs, one linebacker) and two others who can play either tight end or defensive end. As usual, Stanford's recruiting was national. Ten states are represented among the 12 players and only one is from California. The Cardinal recruited two players from Texas and Arizona and one each from Minnesota, Washington, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Louisiana, Florida and California. All four of the Cardinal's offensive lineman were named prep All-Americans, and two were ranked among the top seven OL prospects in the country. Alex Fletcher (Old Brookville, NY/St. Anthony's HS) was tabbed by Super Prep as the No. 3 offensive lineman in the nation while Allen Smith (Tempe, AZ/Corona del 2004 Stanford University Football Recruiting Class Name Pos Ht. He is a finalist for Ohio state Player of the Year honors. Kimble played running back, quarterback, wide receiver and returned kicks in high school while accounting for over 2,700 yards in all-purpose running. He will used as a wide receiver at Stanford. All three were ranked among the best recruits in their region. The Cardinal recruited two defensive backs in Carlos McFall (San Antonio, TX/Roosevelt HS) and Wopamo Osasai (Pinole, CA/Pinole HS). McFall was an option quarterback in high school who earned the reputation as one of the top athletes in the San Antonio area. Osasai is Stanford's only recruit from California. He earned All-Farwest honors while playing for nearby Pinole High School. McFall also earned All-Region accolades. Stanford's only linebacker in the class is Pat Maynor (Jupiter, FL/Swyer), considered among the top four linebackers in the state of Florida this past season. He earned All-Southeast honors in 2003. Two players come to Stanford as tight end/defensive end prospects: Pannel Egboh (Mesquite, TX/North Mesquite HS) and Austin Gunder (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion HS), both of whom earned All-Region recognition.
