Despite the setback, the Cubs have still won 18 of their last 22 games and own the best record in all of baseball at 77 44, five games ahead of the next closest club (Washington Nationals, 72 49) the Cubs have gone 25 9 in their last 34 games starting July 10, also the best record in all of baseball in that span. With 121 games down, the Cubs have finished nearly three quarters of their season on pace for 103 wins. IT HAD ONLY BEEN 124 YEARS, NBD: Dexter Fowler last night connected for a home run to lead off the game in the top of the first while Colorado s David Dahl held serve with a leadoff blast of his own in the bottom half according to Ed Hartig, the Cubs were last involved in a game featuring two leadoff homers nearly 124 years ago, when Chicago s Jimmy Ryan and Cincinnati s Bug Holliday turned the trick on September 29, 1892. YOU GO, WE GO: Dexter Fowler s leadoff home run last night was the 20th of his career and his sixth this season his last five home runs overall have led off the game Fowler has now hit 11 home runs to lead off a game in his two seasons with the Cubs, fourth most in franchise history, after hitting a total of nine home runs to lead off a game in his first seven big league campaigns prior to Chicago. Fowler has reached safely in 20 of his 25 games since returning from the D.L. with a hamstring strain, July 22 he has scored a run in 15 of those 25 games the Cubs are 38 10 when he reaches base safely at least twice in a game ironically, the team is also 38 10 when Fowler scores at least one run. Furthermore, Fowler is now batting.403 with seven doubles, a triple, six home runs, a.482 on base percentage and a.778 slugging percentage when leading off a game this season hat tip to Comcast SportsNet Chicago s Christopher Kamka for this nugget. MONTGOMERY MAKES NINE: Mike Montgomery will make his first start for the Cubs tonight to become the ninth starting pitcher utilized by the Cubs this season. The Cubs began the season by utilizing only five starters through their first 83 games before Adam Warren made a spot start on July 6, the fourth latest into a campaign that the Cubs had ever added in a sixth starting pitcher after five guys for 83 games, the Cubs have plugged in four starting pitchers to their mix in the last 39 games. ADDISON MUSCLE: Addison Russell last night slugged a two run homer, his 15th of the season to help up his season RBI total to 76 he now leads the Cubs with 20 multi RBI games this year, ahead of Anthony Rizzo (18) and Kris Bryant (15). Russell leads all National League shortstops with 76 RBI this season and trails only Houston s Carlos Correa (83 RBI) for most RBI by a shortstop in the majors. Overall, Addison is on pace for 20 homers and 102 RBI this year since 1900, only two Cubs shortstops have recorded more RBI than Addison has already tallied this season: Starlin Castro (78 RBI in 2012) and Roy Smalley (85 RBI in 1950). Bryant has joined Ernie Banks as the only two players in franchise history to reach 30 homers in either their first or second big league season Banks hit 44 homers in 1955 after clubbing 19 homers as a rookie in 1954. Bryant also is just the fifth Cub ever to reach 30 homers in his age 24 season, joining Banks, Ron Santo (1964), Sammy Sosa (1993) and Anthony Rizzo (2014).
