Game #97, Home Game #51 Thursday, July 20th Durham Bulls Athletic Park 7:05 PM Lehigh Valley IronPigs (60-37 / 2nd / 1.5 GB) vs. Durham Bulls (59-37 / 1st) RHP Jake Thompson (3-11, 5.59) vs. RHP Austin Pruitt (0-0, 2.29) Tonight s Game The Bulls remain at home tonight to start a four-game, weekend series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Bulls are coming off a three-game series win over the West Division leading Indianapolis Indians, which included a 9-4 victory in the rubber match last night. The IronPigs, meanwhile, come to Durham winners of four straight, including a three-game series sweep in Gwinnett. This series marks the first time the Bulls and Pigs have met this season, with the only other series between the two clubs coming in Lehigh Valley later this month. Last Game Catcher Curt Casali put together his best offensive night of the season Wednesday, as the Bulls backstop went 2-3 with a home run and six RBI to carry Durham to a 9-4 win over the Indianapolis Indians. Casali was in the middle of all three of the Bulls offensive rallies, as he walked in the teams two-run second inning, lined a double in the four-run third, and crushed a homer in the three-run fifth. The big night helped Durham secure the series win over Indianapolis, with the South Division leading Bulls taking 2 of 3 games from the West Division leading Indians. Casali Crushes Indians Curt Casali was the driving force behind the Bulls big night at the dish Wednesday, with the backstop going 2-3 with a home run, double, and six RBI. The six RBI performance was a season-high for the 28-year-old, and fell just one shy of tying his career-high of seven which he hit while playing for High-A Charlotte in 2013. The long ball was a long time coming for Casali as well, with his three-run shot in the fifth marking his first big fly since June 17. Men on Base? Casali s Your Man While Bulls catcher Curt Casali may not be having a great offensive season by his standards, the major league veteran has been a force to recon with when batting with runners on base. The California native leads all Bulls batters with a.343 average and a.909 OPS when batting with runners anywhere on base. Those numbers are even more impressive with runners in scoring position, with Casali mashing to the tune of a team-high.404 batting average and an 1.149 OPS in 57 at-bats. Bauers Bashing Doubles Jake Bauers went 2-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored last night, raising his season total for two-base hits to 23. That total is good enough to rank second on the Bulls as well as second in the IL, as teammate Johnny Field currently leads Durham and the league with 25 doubles on the year. Yonny Be Good (Quality to be Exact) RHP Yonny Chirinos may have allowed four totals runs against the Indians in his start last night, but only one of the tallies was earned as the Venezuela native went six innings allowing four runs, one earned, on six hits, one walk, and eight strikeouts while earning the win. The victory was the 10th of the year for Yonny, moving him into a tie for the most wins in the IL. The 23-year-old also ranks among the league s best in ERA (4th, 2.89), WHIP (2nd, 0.99), and BAA (3rd,.226), with his nine quality starts on the year also tying him with Ryan Yarbrough for tops among all Durham pitchers. Adames Back on Base Shortstop Willy Adames snapped out of his mini slump by reaching base safely four times Wednesday night, as the 21-yearold went 2-2 with two walks and three runs scored. The big night broke a season-worst 0-15 skid for Adames that stretched back over four games. The contest was the fourth time this year that the All-Star has reached base safely exactly four times. Bulls vs. The Best The battle between the Bulls and IronPigs marks the 14th series this season Durham has faced off with another team with an above-.500 record. After last night s win the Bulls are 23-20 overall vs. the five teams they ve faced with a winning record, which at this point does not include the top two teams in the North Division in Scranton/Wilkes-Barrre and Lehigh Valley. Durham has had the most success against fellow South Division foe Gwinnett with a 9-4 record, while the Bulls have identical 2-5 losing records against both Columbus and Pawtucket. The Bulls are in the middle of arguably their toughest stretch of the season, with three of their four series coming against one of the league s seven winning teams. Second Half State of the League The Bulls victory on Wednesday raised their record on the year to 59-37, which moves them 11.5 games up on second place Gwinnett in the South 2017 IL Standings 1.) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (61-35) 2.) Lehigh Valley (60-37, 1.5 GB) 3.) BULLS (59-37, 2.0 GB) 4.) Rochester (55-41, 6.0 GB) Division. Durham s impressive record would only put them in the middle of the pack of the high-flying Noth Division however, which includes three of the top four teams in the IL. First place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre leads the way with a 61-35 mark that stands at the best in the league, while second place Lehigh Valley is just 1.5 games behind them with a 60-37 record. Sitting in third place in the North but with the fourth best record in the league is Rochester at 55-41. 17 BY THE NUMBERS Place in Southern Div 1st Games Behind (Division) 0.0 Games Behind (WC) 0.0 Current Streak W2 Home 33-17 Road 26-20 vs. RHP (starter) 43-21 vs. LHP (starter) 16-16 vs. South Division 33-15 vs. North Division 11-8 vs. West Division 15-14 Day 5-9 Night (5:05+) 54-28 Extra Innings 4-6 Shutouts 13-3 One-Run Games 14-8 Three or fewer 18-14 Four or more 27-15 Scoring First 45-16 Opponent Scores First 14-21 Leading after 6 50-1 Trailing after 6 4-32 Tied after 6 5-4 Series Openers 19-10 Series Finales 9-13 Rubber Matches 4-2 Doubleheader Games 3-1 Sweep/Swept/Split 1/0/1 2-Game Series (W/L/T) 1/0/1 3-Game Series 12-4 Sweep/Swept 3/1 4-Game Series (W/L/T) 5/2/4 Sweep/Swept 2/1 5-Game Series 0-0 Sweep/Swept 0/0 Monday 5-4 Tuesday 10-5 Wednesday 10-3 Thursday 8-6 Friday 10-4 Saturday 11-5 Sunday 5-10 April 16-7 May 15-13 June 18-11 July 10-6 August 0-0 September 0-0 2017 BULLS vs. IRONPIGS Overall 0-0 DBAP 0-0 Coca-Cola Park 0-0 2016 Head-to-Head 1-5 BULLS ALL-TIME RECORD Overall 6,384-6,098 International League 1,446-1,274 Upcoming Schedule and Probable Starters Date Opponent Durham Starter Opponent Starter time Friday, July 21 vs. Lehigh Valley LHP Ryan Yarbough (9-4, 3.55) RHP Mark Leiter (1-0, 4.74) 7:05 pm Saturday, July 22 vs. Lehigh Valley LHP Michael Roth (0-2, 6.55) RHP Tom Eshelman (7-2, 2.14) 6:35 pm Sunday, July 23 vs. Lehigh Valley RHP Brent Honeywell (9-7, 4.27) RHP Ben Lively (7-1, 2.27) 5:05 pm Monday, July 24 @ Buffalo RHP Yonny Chirinos (10-3, 2.89) TBD 7:05 pm Today s game will be broadcast on Buzz Sports Radio: 96.5 FM in Durham and 99.3 FM in Raleigh
