In March, I joined Luigi and Jeannie in Bonaire for the last week of their annual Bonaire windsurfing trip. The first day the wind was good and I sailed 5.6. The second day also had good wind, but we had booked an all day drift snorkel trip on the "Woodwind" catamaran and went snorkeling instead, along the shore of the Klein Bonaire island. I got to try out my new Canon D20 pocket underwater camera, which I bought on my Galapagos trip, but the water was choppy from the wind.the rest of the week was filled with the usual light air sailing, snorkeling off the beaches, and lots and lots of eating good food. Another relaxing and lots of fun. - Kimo. Here are a couple of Photos from the AWT (American Windsurfing Tour) contest in Punta San Carlos (Baja) where Steve Roy and I (blue helmet) competed. I got 1st and Steve got 2nd in the Grand Masters division. - Andrew
New Cabrillo Racing Series Xavier Ferlet is organizing a racing series at Cabrillo Beach, San Pedro this year. The idea came up as from May till the end of September the wind blows fairly strong at Cabrillo, combined with the fact that Cabrillo is Xavier s local beach. Cabrillo Beach proved to be a very popular windsurfing spot over the years. The series is made out of 5 events starting from May till September. Xavier will be giving clinics before each event. The idea is to get more and more people interested in windsurfing and racing. I like to encourage people to get together and learn from each other through windsurfing. If you haven t heard already, this year s Nationals are scheduled to be held at Cabrillo Beach, LA, between August 4 th and 9 th. This is the first time that the US National Championships will be held in LA, ironic when one considers the fact that the first time windsurfing was in the Olympics it was in LA not far away from Cabrillo Beach. About a year and a half ago as many of three communities around the country were vying to host the 2013 Nationals. Our US Windsurfing Regional Director, Peter Bonello, got wind that the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club was one of the three. In April of 2012, he arranged a meeting with officials of the club to discuss their resources and advise of windsurfers expectations. They were eager and followed up by submitting a proposal to US Windsurfing to host the event, who subsequently agreed and made it official by announcing it at last Year s Nationals at the Gorge in Oregon. Peter rounded up a few local windsurfers to help advise the Yacht Club on the type of events to run, to help promote the event and to seek sponsorship. Opting to include as many windsurfing events as possible, this year s Nationals are going to feature, Course Racing, Slalom and Freestyle. The Course racing will include formula, long board open and one-design classes. Within each class are the usual age and gender divisions. Of course with this many options, a minimum of five entries will be required to formulate a division for which a National Champion will be declared. The course racing will also feature a long distance race. Cabrillo offers an excellent opportunity for an upwind-downwind long distance race along the long beach breakwater. This breakwater has two wide openings within: Angels Gate and Queens Gate, each identified by a lighthouse with intermittent horn blasts. These openings will no doubt feature as gates for the long distance race spreading the course over open blue water sailing and protected flat water with no compromise in wind strength. The breakwater itself is a great visible feature that gives competitors who may be unfamiliar with Long Beach a great visual cue of the course. This year s Nationals will also feature Slalom with no restrictions on gear. The coarse is likely to be the standard downwind slalom course which features four gybe marks between a start line and a down-wind finish line. Freestyle will also be featured in this year s Nationals which is expected to attract some of the pro freestylers of the country. Debi Thompson of Thousand Oaks has volunteered her time and expertise to design and set up the event website which has been live since March of 2013. The link for the site is www.2013windsurfingnationals.com. The website is being linked to by several other windsurfing websites such as Windsurfing Tour.com, Formulawindsurfing.org, and uswindsurfing.org, to name a few. It is regularly being updated posting answers to questions by interested parties, more lodging opportunities in and around San Pedro as well places of interest for those who may be accompanying participants. Peter and his group of volunteers are also actively pursuing sponsors. One of the agreements made with the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club was to keep the registration fee at or below $140, per person which means that real costs will need to be recuperated from other sources of revenue. Sponsors have been hard to come by admits Peter, but encouraged by a few donations that have started to come in his team is undeterred. Another form of sponsorship that they are pursuing is for windsurfers to be provided for charter for the one-design classes. They are currently in talks with several potential suppliers and are optimistic that they will have a charter fleet on hand. By Peter Bonello
