The Opening Serve - Evansville made it a perfect 6-0 in the last two seasons at the Leatherneck Invitational - UE opened with a 3-2 win over Tennessee Tech before earning a 3-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson; in the finale, the Aces topped Western Illinois in five sets - Rachel Tam was named the Most Valuable Player in the event while Kerra Cornist and Gabriela dos Santos garnered All-Tournament accolades Pacing the offense - Rachel Tam had one of the best weekends in program history in leading the Purple Aces to a perfect 3-0 mark and the Leatherneck Invitational Championship - Tam recorded 79 kills in 14 sets of action, an average of 5.64 per set. Just as impressive was her accurate hitting as she finished the weekend at.348. Entering the weekend, Tam s career kills mark was 27, which she broke twice in the opening three matches. - Her unbelievable start saw her open the year with 28 kills in 47 attempts, hitting.489 against Tennessee Tech; after recording 22 kills against FDU, Tam finished the weekend with a career mark of 29 kills against the Leathernecks - Last year, Tam led the way for the UE offense with 2.78 kills per set Helping on both sides - Known throughout her career as someone who is dependable on offense and defense, Mildrelis Rodriguez did not disappoint in the opening weekend of 2018 - Rodriguez finished second on the team in both kills and digs - She tallied 3.21 kills per set with a total of 45 while her 34 digs (2.43/frame) was second only behind Gabriela dos Santos 5.64 - In a home win over Bradley last year, Rodriguez had a great 20-20 performance, notching 21 kills and 22 digs while adding three block assists; it was the first such match for an Evansville player since Brooke Maher in 2010 Taking it to a new level - Senior Gabriela dos Santos had a great start to her senior campaign while helping the Aces to a 3-0 start as the primary libero - Entering the weekend, her career-high was 21 digs, but she surpassed that in all three weekend matches - dos Santos recorded 79 digs, an average of 5.64 per set while adding eight service aces over the weekend - Her top mark of 28 digs came in the 3-1 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson Finish on a high note - Senior Rocio Fortuny looks to finish her career on a high note following a junior season that saw her finish with 2.11 kills per set along with a total of 47 block assists - She finished the first weekend fourth on the team with 1.43 kills per set including an 11-kill effort against FDU Young players making impact - Two freshmen had stellar debuts in the trip to Macomb - Kerra Cornist garnered All-Tournament Team accolades as she averaged 1.71 kills per set while ranking second on the team with 10 block assists - Cecilia Thon was UE s top setter in the 3-0 start, posting at least 24 in all three games including her career mark of 32 against Fairleigh Dickinson Holding up the middle - Joselyn Coronel got the job done on defense in the Leatherneck Invitational, pacing the team with 12 block assists, an average of 0.86 per set - It was a nice start for Coronel, who averaged 0.67 in 2017 - Her top effort on the weekend was six block assists versus Fairleigh Dickinson Follow it up - Allana McInnis enjoyed a strong freshman season in 2017, pacing the Aces with a total of 836 assists, an average of 7.40 per set - She finished the year ranked 9th in the MVC with her assist tally while her 0.24 service aces per frame average was 8th in the league - She set her career mark with 54 assists versus ISU in Terre Haute last year Moving Forward - Evansville improved both offensively and defensively in 2017 when compared to the previous year (2016) - In 2016, the Aces hit.139 for the season with opponents hitting.250; last year, UE upped its hitting to.148 while limiting the opponents to.203. - #7 - Patricia Joseph - began her college career at Hutchinson (KS) Community College where she was a National Qualifier in Track. - #9 - Cecilia Thon - was a 4-time All-Star Team member in volleyball in her high school career in Puerto Rico; her father Dickie Thon played for six teams in his MLB career while her mother, three sisters and brother are all accomplished athletes - #11 - Elena Redmond - earned three letters in volleyball at Bishop Chatard HS in Indianapolis; garnered All-City, All-Conference and All-State honors - #14 - Alondra Vazquez - member of the Puerto Rico Junior National Team prior to coming to UE; won the High School National Championship in 2017. Patton Court inside the Meeks Family Fieldhouse on a brand new Taraflex floor. Scouting the Opponent - SEMO heads to Evansville with a perfect 3-0 record as they took the Troy Invitational Championship - The Redhawks earned wins over Southern, Southeastern Louisiana and the host Trojans - Madara Bajare led SEMO with 3.00 kills per set while Claire Ochs paced the offense with 9.44 assists per game Formerly Meeks Family Court, the Fieldhouse will house the Purple Aces volleyball and women s basketball teams. New amenities of the facility include: - New bleachers on the west side of the facility - Chairback seating - Taraflex floor for volleyball (1st facility in the MVC to do so) - Resurfaced women s basketball floor - New baskets - Upgraded sound system - New main videoboard, score/stat board, LED scoreboard on each sideline and two video sideline boards - Updated volleyball netting equipment - Wall graphics on both sides of the arena UE is also excited to honor women s sports pioneer Lois D. Patton by naming the volleyball and women s basketball floors in her honor.
