RANKINGS Eastern Illinois... RV / 25 Penn State...RV / NR... Sports Network/FCS Coaches The Game Eastern Illinois returns to Ohio Valley Conference action on Saturday afternoon as the Panthers host Tennessee Tech at O Brien Field. Both teams enter the contest with a 2-1 record in the OVC and sit tied for third in the conference race. The game will serve as the Panthers homecoming contest and athletic hall of fame game. During the game Eastern Illinois will retire the No. 17 formerly worn by All-American quarterback Tony Romo. Eastern Illinois enters the game on a two game losing skid following a home loss to Eastern Kentucky on Oct. 3 and last weekend s loss at Penn State. The Panthers were limited to only three points against the Nittany Lions during the 52-3 set back in Happy Valley. EIU has not lost a homecoming game since 1999, that loss was to Tennessee Tech. Tennessee Tech enters the weekend with two straight OVC wins as they knocked off Austin Peay on Oct. 3 before winning on the road at UT Martin over the weekend. In their two OVC wins TTU has won by eight points or less on both occasions. Their one OVC loss this year was a 17-7 loss at Eastern Kentucky. THE SERIES This will be the 16th meeting between Eastern Illinois and Tennessee Tech with the Panthers holding an 11-4 all-time series lead. EIU has won four straight in the series and 11- of-13 since joining the Ohio Valley Conference. One of the two losses was to Tennessee Tech in 1999 during the Panthers homecoming contest, the last EIU loss during homecoming. Last year in Cookeville, EIU churned out 296 rushing yards during a 38-20 win over the Golden Eagles. In that game Trevorus Bess (163) and Chevon Walker (109) both rushed for more than 100 yards while Desmin Ward scored three rushing touchdowns. A 1960 graduate of Purdue University, Spoo has coached the Panthers to 8 NCAA FCS playoff berths and ten Top 25 national rankings. This season EIU will play at Penn State matching two of the longest tenured head coaches head-to-head on Oct. 10. TENNESSEE TECH HEAD COACH WATSON BROWN Watson Brown enters his 25th year as a collegiate head coach this year and his third season as the head man at Tennessee Tech. A native of Cookeville, Tenn., Brown had previously served as the head coach at Austin Peay, Cincinnati, Rice, Vanderbilt and UAB before taking over at Tennessee Tech in 2007. His career record is 104-169-1 while his record at TTU is 10-18. Brown is a 1973 graduate of Vanderbilt where he played both football and baseball for the Commodores. SCOUTING TENNESSEE TECH Tennessee Tech has one of the best quarterbacks in the Ohio Valley Conference in senior Lee Sweeney. This season he has passed for 957 yards and 7 touchdowns spreading the ball out to 14 different receivers. Last Saturday at UT Martin Sweeney became the Tennessee Tech career leader in passing yards with 6,346. His favorite target is Tim Benford with 19 catches for 355 yards. The defense is led by OVC Defensive Player of the Week Dustin Dillehay with 41 tackles. Dedrick Miley is the team leader in sacks with three. ON THIS DATE IN EIU HISTORY October 17, 1970 Eastern Illinois failed on three point-after conversions and allowed a 90-yard kickoff return by Billy Lewis late in the third quarter as the Panthers dropped their first homecoming game at Lincoln Field (later O Brien Field) to Illinois State 29-20. Ron Gustafson passed for two touchdowns and Ken Werner rushed for one score and caught another touchdown pass for EIU. PANTHERS ON HOMECOMING Eastern Illinois will be playing its 93rd homecoming game this year when the Panthers host Tennessee Tech. This will mark only the second time that the Golden Eagles have been the opponent for EIU s homecoming contest with TTU winning that game 14-7 in 1999. Eastern Illinois has posted a 47-37-8 record all-time in homecoming games including nine straight wins. The first EIU homecoming game was in 1915 with the Panthers picking up a 52-6 win over Shurtleff College. Since moving to O Brien Field for the 1970 season Eastern Illinois has posted a 27-10-2 record in homecoming games. hall of fame HONOREES As part of the weekend festivities Eastern Illinois will also be inducting five people into its athletics hall of fame. Being inducted prior to the game at a brunch on Saturday morning and then honored during halftime of the game will be: long time athletic supporter and 2006 Glen Hesler Award winner Ed Corley; former men s basketball All-American and EIU career leading scorer Henry Domercant; former baseball standout and All-OVC selection Sean Lyons; 1965 NAIA National Champion wrestler Don Neece; and former All-American quarterback and 2002 Walter Payton Award winner Tony Romo.

October 17, 2009 Eastern Illinois vs. Tennessee Tech Page 3 www.eiupanthers.com COOK NAMED TOP SPECIALIST Eastern Illinois punter Kevin Cook was named the Ohio Valley Conference Specialist of the Week following his efforts at Penn State. The junior averaged 48.2 yards per punt on six attempts with a long punt of 58 yards and another punt pinned inside the 20. For the season Cook is averaging 43.4 yards per punt which leads the OVC and would rank 10th in the FCS if he had enough attempts to qualify for the national standings. Cook has had four punts of more than 50 yards with another four pinned inside the 20. Two years ago Cook was an honorable mention All-American as he broke Jeff Gossett s season punting record with an average of 44.6 yards per punt. ROMO TO GET RETIRED As part of Saturday s contest Eastern Illinois will officially retire the No. 17 previously worn by quarterback Tony Romo. Romo will become the first Eastern Illinois player to have his number retired and only the fifth former EIU athlete to be honored in that manner. Romo was the Panthers starting quarterback from 2000-02 leading the team to three straight FCS playoff berths while winning three straight OVC Player of the Year Awards. In 2002 he was named the Walter Payton Award winner ending his career the OVC career leader in touchdown passes with 85. Romo joins former baseball star Marty Pattin, basketball star Kevin Duckworth, women s basketball star Nancy Kassebaum and men s soccer player Erik Proffitt as players formerly recognized. PANTHERS PLAY TO BIG CROWD Eastern Illinois played not only to a national audience on ESPN Classic on Saturday at Penn State but the Panthers also played in front of the biggest crowd to ever watch an Eastern Illinois game. The Beaver Stadium crowd was announced at 104,488 which easily surpassed the previous high of 60,131 that watched in 2008 when the Panthers played at Memorial Stadium in Illinois. The crowd of 100,000-plus was also the largest crowd ever to see an OVC team play passing the mark of 85,754 when Tennessee Tech played at Auburn in 2007. During the Panthers game on Oct. 3 against the Colonels, EIU drew a crowd of 11,271 which ranked as the 9th largest crowd ever to witness a game at O Brien Field. It marked only the 10th time that a crowd of 11,000 or more had attended a game and the third time that has happened since the Panthers joined the OVC. The previous crowd of 11,000-plus was Oct. 27, 2001 when EIU quarterbacked by Tony Romo won a shoot out with Tennessee State, 52-49. HALFWAY TO A 1,000 Running back Mon Williams seemed to get slightly back on track on Saturday at Penn State as he finished the day with 64 yards on 14 carries for a 4.6 yards per carry average. That effort pushed Williams over the 500 yard mark for the season giving him 505 yards in six games. Williams is looking to give the Panthers a running back over a 1,000 yards for the sixth straight season and become the 10th running back to accomplish that feat. Williams is averaging 84.2 yards per game which ranks 34th in the country and 3rd in the OVC. This season he has had two games with more than 100-yards rushing. Eastern Illinois Players On All-OVC Preseason Team Offense Chaz Millard - Offensive Guard MILLARD STREAK CONTINUES Senior center Chaz Millard continues his streak of consecutive games without allowing a sack as he played against Penn State. Millard has not allowed a sack for 32 straight games playing right guard the last two seasons and center the first six games this year. That streak dates back to Nov. 4, 2006 when Millard allowed a sack to Tennessee State. PANTHER INJURY REPORT Eastern Illinois lost the services of sophomore linebacker Cory Leman on Saturday after he suffered an MCL injury to his knee which will keep him out of the line-up for 4-to-6 weeks. Leman was the Panthers leading tackler with 55 stops which ranked 44th in the nation. Junior Nate Galan will be a game time decision after getting banged up in the game at Penn State. The Panthers should have redshirt freshman tight end Keagan Robinson available to play after he missed the last four weeks with a hamstring injury. NO TACKLES FOR LOSS Eastern Illinois was held without a tackle for loss on Saturday at Penn State marking the first time in more than 22 years that had happened. The last time EIU was held without a tackle for loss was on Sept. 5, 1987 during a 24-3 loss at San Jose State. On the season Eastern Illinois is averaging 6.33 tackles for loss per game which ranks 51st overall and 6th in the OVC. signor sends two more out Though he was limited to only two chances to kick off at Penn State, senior Austin Signor made the most of both chances as he sailed both kicks into the end zone. Signor continues to lead the FCS ranks with 14 kicks for touchback this season. The only other kicker in double digits this year is Ryan Griffith with ten kicks for touchback. Signor is also handling the field goal duties this season and ranks first in the OVC in field goals converting 7-of-10 this year. reeder sees time Bodie Reeder was able to see some time on the field at Penn State completing 2-of- 4 passes for 10 yards. Those completions move his career total up to 350 which places him four shy of tying Roger Haberer for 8th place on the career list. HOLDING THEM UNDER 100 Eastern Illinois was able to hold a running back to less than 100 yards in a game for the sixth straight game this season as Penn State s top rusher Evan Royster finished with 94 yards against the Panthers. Dating back to last season EIU had not allowed a 100 yard rusher in seven straight games. On the season EIU ranks 45th against the run allowing only 126.67 yards per contest. another turnover gained Eastern Illinois added to its season turnover mark on Saturday with Nick Nasti getting an interception for the defense. The Panthers now have 13 turnovers gained this season with interceptions in five straight games and at least one turnover gained in all six contests. Dating back to last year EIU now has a streak of ten straight games with at least one turnover gained. whittaker becoming target For the second straight week freshman Kenny Whittaker has become the Panthers favorite target at wide receiver making five catches in each of the last two games. For the season Whittaker has hauled in 18 passes for a team-high 199 yards. He is averaging 11.1 yards per catch with two touchdowns on the year. first down catches When Eastern Illinois hits one of its receivers this season more often that not it has resulted in a first down. Entering the game with Tennessee Tech this weekend seven of the Panthers top eight receivers are averaging more than 10 yards per reception. Chavar Watkins and Lorence Ricks have been the two deep threats with both averaging over 20 yards per catch. The Panthers leading receiver in terms of number of catches, Jimmy Potempa, is the lone receiver in the top eight under ten yards per reception at only 6.4. haynes on the break-up Junior Rashad Haynes added another pass break-up to his career stats on Saturday giving him 20 pass break-ups for his career and a team-high six on the season. Haynes is among a group of players who are tied for 50th in the nation in pass break-ups this season while he ranks third in the OVC behind T.J. Heath of JSU and Jeremy Caldwell of EKU.

The last nationally televised contest was on ESPN Classic on Oct. 10 this year at Penn State. making the big ten rounds The Panthers will continue to make their trip around the Big Ten Conference this season as they play at Penn State on Oct. 10. After not playing a Big Ten school for more than 100 years of football, EIU will be facing a Big Ten opponent for the fourth straight year. That string will continue over the next two years with a trip to Iowa set for 2010 and Northwestern in 2011. WALTERS MAKES THE CUT The Panthers will have yet another face in the National Football League this season as 2008 graduate Pierre Walters was among those players named to the 53-man roster for the Kansas City Chiefs prior to the 2009 NFL season. The video board also includes a new stateof-the-art sound system. The scoreboard system was purchased from Daktronics, Inc., and will provide a new dimension to the Panthers home game experience. The only catch is that Panther fans will now have to get accustomed to turning north instead of south were the previous scoreboards have stood for 40 years. o brien field turns 40 Eastern Illinois will play its 40th season of intercollegiate football at O Brien Field this season. The field was originally opened as Lincoln Field in 1970 with the Panthers losing the dedication game on Sept. 12 against Indiana State, 28-18. The field complex was later renamed O Brien Field in honor of former football, track and cross country coach Maynard Pat O Brien. In the 40 years at O Brien, EIU has posted a 150-68-3 record (68 percent) with seven undefeated seasons. MILLARD NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN Senior Chaz Millard has been named a preseason All- American by several publications after earning honorable mention All-American honors each of the past two seasons at right guard. During the spring due to injuries on the offensive line Millard moved over to the center position and played so well he won the starting job at that spot. He enters the 2009 season with a streak of 26 games without allowing a sack. He graded out at 93 percent last season with 57 decleater blocks. FATHER/SON COMBO When Jake Christensen suits up at quarterback for Eastern Illinois he will join his father as one of two recent Panther father/ son combinations. Christensen s father Jeff played quarterback at EIU from 1980-82 and left as the school s career leading passer with 6,282 yards. He has since fallen to fourth but does still rank in many single season and career top ten lists at EIU. Last season linebacker Shannon Cobb was a member of the Panthers team after his father David was a defensive back on the 1978 EIU Division II National Championship team. LORA REPRESENTS TEAM USA Incoming freshman wide receiver Erik Lora got a little extra football in this summer as he was selected as a member of the junior U.S. National Football Team. Lora competed in the Junior World Football Games helping the USA win gold as he made six catches for 75 yards and one touchdown in the three game tournament. panthers picked 3rd in ovc Eastern Illinois was selected to finish third in the OVC preseason coaches poll that was released mid-summer. The Panthers received two first place votes as five teams received at least one first place vote. Eastern Kentucky was selected to finish first with UT Martin picked second. Probable league favorite Jacksonville State was not eligible for the OVC title based on an NCAA APR penalty for this season.
