He scored all 17 of his points in the second half against Northern Illinois on Dec. 2 before erupting for a career-high 31 points against Central Michigan on Dec. 5. The Baltimore native totaled 31 points by going 9-for-11 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the three-point line. He also knocked down 7-of-10 free throws and added two rebounds and two steals. Melvin was named the BIG EAST s Rookie of the Week on Dec. 27, Jan. 3 and Jan. 17. Melvin is the only DePaul player to earn the BIG EAST honor three times in a season and joins Wilson Chandler as the only DePaul players to pick up Rookie of the Week honors multiple times in a season. Melvin is also the first DePaul freshman to earn the honor in back-to-back weeks. He was named Rookie of the Week on Dec. 27 following a career-high 23 points against Florida Atlantic on Dec. 22. He added four rebounds to his career-high scoring total along with two steals, a blocked shot and an assist in 27 minutes of action. Midway through the first half Melvin personally outscored Florida Atlantic, 13-12. He has compiled 400 victories in his 23 seasons as a NCAA Division I head coach at Radford (1988-91), Old Dominion (1991-94), Dayton (1994-03) and Clemson (2003-10). He is in his first season at DePaul with a career record of 400-284. In 1900, when the first athletic team to represent DePaul University was organized, the monogram D was selected for the uniforms. This originated the nickname D-men which evolved into Demons. The blue, which combines with Demons, signifies loyalty and was chosen in 1901 by a vote of the student body. Month-to-Month: After starting the season with a 1-4 record in November, the Blue Demons turned things around with a 5-3 mark in December. The five victories mark the most victories in December since the 2006-07 team went posted a 7-1 record in December. Over the last three seasons, DePaul has posted December records of 3-5 in 2009-10, 4-6 in 2008-09 and 2-5 in 2007-08. It s Been a While: DePaul freshman Brandon Young scored in double-figures in each of his first seven collegiate games. He is the first rookie to score at least 10 points in the first seven contests since Lance Williams started the 1998-99 season with nine straight games in double-figures. Quentin Richardson opened his collegiate career with Williams and recorded double-figures in his first four games while Bobby Simmons

game nineteen vs. pittsburgh accomplished the feat over his first three games at DePaul. Young s run ended with a five-point outing at Indiana State on Dec. 8. Cleveland Blocks: DePaul freshman Cleveland Melvin made his presence felt against Central Michigan on Dec. 5 by recording five blocked shots. His total is the highest for a DePaul player since Devin Hill tallied five rejections against UIC on Dec. 13, 2009 and one shy of moving into a tie for sixth on DePaul s game blocked shots list. Melvin leads the Blue Demons with 26 blocked shots in 18 games this season and needs eight more blocks to move into a tie for 20th on DePaul s season chart. MIKE and mike: Despite reaching double-figures only 12 times in his collegiate career, senior guard/forward Mike Stovall has made the most of the double-figure outings. He is averaging 15.6 points per game when reaching double-figures with five double-figure games as a junior. Through 18 games in his senior campaign, the Chicago native has a season-high of 19 points in the opener against Chicago State while also registering games of 13, 10 and 11 points at the 76 Classic against Oklahoma State, Cal State Northridge and Stanford. On Dec. 2, he tallied 16 points against Northern Illinois in just 18 minutes of action, scored 12 points against Ball State on Dec. 11 and 13 against Loyola-Chicago on Dec. 18. As a junior, he scored 19 points against Texas State, a career-high 30 points against Providence, 11 at St. John s and 14 points at Notre Dame. When Stovall doesn t reach double-figures, he averages 4.3 points per game with 154 total points in 36 games. Getting Settled: A year ago, DePaul struggled at the free throw line and ranked last in the NCAA rankings with a team free throw percentage of.582. Through the first 18 games of 2010-11, the Blue Demons are a combined 274-of-394 (.695) from the charity stripe. DePaul is 133rd out of 336 ranked team in the Jan. 16 NCAA statistical rankings and eighth among the 16 schools in the BIG EAST through games of Jan. 20. A closer look at the numbers show that the team increases its free throw percentage as the game moves into the second half. The Blue Demons are a combined 123-for-178 (.691) from the line in the first 20 minutes compared to a free throw percentage of.700 (147-210) in the second half. Individually, Brandon Young is 27-of-40 (.675) in the first half this season and 21-for-30 (.700) in the second half while Tony Freeland is 20- for-35 (.571) in the first half and 37-of-57 (.649) in the second period. One final comparison to last season at the free throw line sees the Blue Demons increasing the trips to the line after averaging 17.1 attempts last season compared to 21.9 attempts per game in 2010-11. Three Decades in Rosemont: DePaul is in its 31st season in 2010-11 at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. The Blue Demons are 307-126 (.709) all-time in Rosemont. DePaul University played its first season at the thennamed Rosemont Horizon in 1980. The Blue Demons debuted in Rosemont with a 74-56 win over Gonzaga and John Stockton on Dec. 1, 1980. DePaul Signs four for Next Season CHICAGO When he was hired in April, DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell described his recruiting philosophy as starting from the inside and working out. He followed through on the philosophy in his first full recruiting class with a group rooted in Chicago and stretching south to the Gulf of Mexico. Macari Brooks, Jamee Crockett, Shane Larkin and Derrell Robertson each signed a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday, Nov. 10 and head to Lincoln Park starting next season. The four signees can cover each position on the floor and all four are described as explosive athletes that will thrive in Purnell s signature high pressure defense, high pressure offense system. I m very pleased with the makeup of our first full recruiting class. I think we addressed a lot of needs for next year s team, said Purnell. We were able to sign a guy at each position. I think we have guys that shoot the basketball, guys that have the ability to defend and overall a very athletic class. The class features four players that can play a multiple positions. Brooks and Crockett head north from Chicago s south suburbs and join Larkin from Orlando, Fla., and Robertson from Mendenhall, Miss. Brooks, a 6-2 guard, enters his senior year at Rich South High School in suburban Richton Park, Ill., this season. He played for the Mac Irvin Fire AAU program and is ranked in the top 60 shooting guards in the 2011 class by ESPN.com. Crockett, a 6-4 forward, also played for the Mac Irvin Fire on the AAU circuit and begins his final prep season at Crete-Monee. Known as one of the most athletic players in Illinois, Crockett is ranked among the top 80 small forwards in this year s recruiting class. Macari Brooks is an outstanding athlete who is a natural scorer from all over the floor. I was very impressed with his toughness and tenacity as well, said Purnell. Jamee Crockett is probably as good an athlete as I saw all summer. He s improved his ability to the outside shot. He is a tremendous runner and finisher. Larkin is a 5-11 point guard at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Fla. He picked up first team Class 6A All-State honors as a junior after averaging 19.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.5 steals while leading Dr. Phillips to a 27-6 record and state runner-up finish. Ranked among the top 25 point guards in the 2011 class, Larkin played for the Showtime Ballers and Florida Assault during the summer. His father, Barry Larkin, played for the Cincinnati Reds and was a 12-time All-Star. Shane Larkin is an outstanding point guard from Orlando. He not only provides the ability to quarterback the team, but he s shown an ability to shoot the three-point shot with consistency, said Purnell.
