The Cougars come into this weekend s contest after a 93-85 win against Troy on Monday. In that game, senior guard Aubrey Coleman the nation s leading scorer led all players with 25 points despite being held to one point through the first 16 minutes, while senior guard Kelvin Lewis was dazzling from the 3-point line, draining 7-of-9 long-range attempts. Saturday s game will be the first time since Dec. 1, 1982, that Mississippi State has visited Hofheinz Pavilion. The Cougars own a 5-1 lead in the all-time series against the Bulldogs, but MSU can boast of the most recent success following an 82-65 win in Starkville on Jan. 3, 2009. This will be the start of a busy time for the Cougars during the holiday season. Houston plays four games during an 11-day stretch. Following Saturday s contest, the Cougars play host to The Citadel (Dec. 21), TCU (Dec. 23) and Louisiana Tech (Dec. 29). FACING THE BEST With the Cougars 100-93 win against No. 25 Oklahoma on Nov. 26 during the Carrs/ Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, the team earned their fourth win against a ranked opponent under head coach Tom Penders. It also was the team s second win against a ranked team outside of Houston during Penders tenure. Prior to Penders arrival in 2004-05, the Cougars had posted only three combined wins against ranked teams in the previous 13 seasons with none of those on the road. FAST BREAKING WITH FEW GIVEAWAYS Fans of the Cougars are treated to a unique team every game. With a fastbreak, up-tempo, athletic team, Houston comfortably leads Conference USA with 86.4 points per game. However, as quickly as the team likes to run up and down the floor, the Cougars also lead the nation with only 9.7 turnovers per game, nearly two fewer giveaways than their closest competitor in the league. Those kind of low giveaway numbers are nothing new to Houston fans. The Cougars have lowered their turnovers per game mark during each of the last five seasons, finished among the nation s top-20 leaders in that category in each of the last three years and the top 10 in the last two. A year ago, the Cougars accomplished the rare feat of leading the league in most points scored (75.8) and fewest turnovers per game (9.8). ABOUT MISSISSIPPI STATE Mississippi State brings an 8-2 record into this weekend s game following its 80-69 home win against Wright State on Wednesday. The Bulldogs have won eight of their last nine games following a season-opening loss to Rider. And those wins have not been close with MSU winning by an average of 22.8 points. Ravern Johnson and Jarvis Varnada are tied for the team lead with 14.3 points per game. They are two of five Bulldogs averaging double-digit points this season. Varnado also paces the Bulldogs with 10.1 rebounds and 5.3 blocks per contest. Dee Bost has averaged 11.7 points through the first 10 games and paces the Bulldogs with 5.4 assists per contest The Coach: Head coach Rick Stansbury is in his 12th season at Mississippi State, posting a 232-128 (.644) record during that time. Junior forward Kahmell Broughton set career highs in points (10), free throws made and attempted (2), rebounds (4) and minutes (16). Sophomore point guard Desmond Wade dished out at least five assists in a game for the sixth time this season... It also was his fourth straight game with at least six assists. MORE FOR THE TROPHY CASE The awards continued to pour in for senior guard Aubrey Coleman, who was honored Dec. 7 as the C-USA Player of the Week for the second straight week. Coleman earned the honor after helping lead the Cougars to a 2-1 record and a third-place finish at the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. He averaged 22.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.0 steals on the way to being named to the All-Tournament Team. He received the league s weekly award on Nov. 23 after posting back-to-back 30-point games against Nicholls State on Nov. 17 and at Nevada on Nov. 21. Coleman became just the third player in school history to accomplish that feat. It was his second award of the 2009-10 season and the fourth honor of his career. Coleman was named the league s Rookie of the Week five times in 2008-09. LIMITED COMPANY With 30-point efforts in back-to-back games to open the season, senior guard Aubrey Coleman joined an exclusive group in Houston history. Coleman joined Cougar legends Otis Birdsong and Elvin Hayes as the only players in school history to record back-to-back 30-point games during the first two games of any season. He became the first player to accomplish that feat since Birdsong did it against Texas Lutheran (34 pts., Nov. 28, 1976) and against Lamar (Dec. 1, 1976). 30-POINT CLUB With a game-high 32 points at Nevada on Nov. 21, senior guard Aubrey Coleman recorded the fifth 30-point effort of his career. That moved him into a tie for ninth place in school history with Dwight Davis (1969-72) and Gary Phillips (1958-61). Up next in the Houston records book is Tim Moore, who posted six 30-point games from 1993 to 1995. MORE FOR THE TROPHY CASE After opening the season with back-to-back 30-point games, senior guard Aubrey Coleman was honored as the Conference USA Player of the Week on Nov. 23. It was his first award of the 2009-10 season but his third honor during his career. In addition, he was named the league s Rookie of the Week five times in 2008-09. TAKING CARE The Cougars lead the country with only 9.7 turnovers per game in 2009-10 and are joined by Michigan (9.4) as the only teams to average fewer than 9.5 giveaways per game. This marks the fourth straight season that the Cougars have ranked among the nation s top-10 teams in fewest turnovers per game. Here is where the Cougars have ranked among all NCAA Division I teams in the last five seasons as well as their ranks in UH single-season history. JUST GETTING STARTED It certainly took little time for senior guard Aubrey Coleman to knock the rust off during Houston s season-opening win against Nicholls State on Nov. 17. The Houston native scored a game-high 33 points on 12-of-25 shooting with three assists and four steals in 26 minutes. Coleman also came just one rebound short of recording the 15th double-double of his career. His performance tied for the third-most points by any Cougar in a season-opening game. His mark equaled the totals of Robert McKiver (at Rhode Island, Nov. 13, 2006); Tim Moore (vs. James Madison, Nov. 25, 1994). It trailed only the school-record 35-point effort by the legendary Elvin Hayes (vs. Sacramento State, Dec. 2, 1967) and 34 points from Otis Birdsong (vs. Texas Lutheran; Nov. 28, 1976). He showed glimpses of things to come in the Cougars season-opening win against Nicholls State on Nov. 17. DISHING OUT DIMES Sophomore point guard Desmond Wade has been a steady offensive leader for the Cougars this season. Through the first seven games, the Linden, N.J., native leads the team and Conference USA with 5.9 assists per contest. Wade, who ranks as one of the shortest players in school history, has handed out at least four assists in all seven games to date this season, including a season-high eight against San Diego on Nov. 27 during the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. As high as his assists totals are, his low turnover numbers are equally dazzling. Wade has recorded two or fewer giveaways in all but one game. As a result, he leads Conference USA and ranks among the nation s top-five individual leaders with a 3.7-1 assist:turnover ratio. MORE THAN ASSISTS In addition to his team-leading assists total, sophomore point guard Desmond Wade has emerged as a consistent scorer this season. Through seven games, Wade ranks fourth on the team with 8.1 points per game and has reached double-digit points in four games. He tied his career high with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-3 treys, during the Cougars win against host Alaska-Anchorage on Nov. 28, during the final day of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. A year ago, Wade reached double-digit points in six games. TEAM CAPTAINS NAMED Senior guards Kelvin Lewis and Aubrey Coleman and senior forward Sean Coleman were named team captains for the 2009-10 season. It marked the second straight season that Lewis and Coleman received that team honor. Head coach Tom Penders and his staff selected the captains during preseason practice. REGULAR-SEASON TOURNAMENT HISTORY This marked the fourth consecutive season that the Cougars competed in a regular-season tournament. With their 2-1 mark at the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, the Cougars improved to 111-61 (.645) all-time record during regular-season tournaments in their history. It was the first time that the Cougars posted a winning record at a regular-season tournament since going 2-1 at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska, on Nov. 18-21, 1999. at Great Alaska Shootout: This was the first time that the Cougars have competed at the Carrs/ Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. With their win against host Alaska-Anchorage on Nov. 28, the Cougars improved to 2-1 at that tournament. However, it was not the first time the program has ventured to the northernmost state. The Cougars competed at the 1999 Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska. Houston opened that tournament with a win against host Alaska-Fairbanks before falling to California and wrapping up their stay with a win against George Washington. RUNNING AND GUNNING With 100 points against No. 25 Oklahoma during the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout on Nov. 26, the Cougars reached the 90-point mark for the third straight game to open the 2009-10 season. This was the first time since 1976-77 and only the third time in school history (1967-68) that the Cougars accomplished that feat. No team in school history has opened a season with at least 90 points in each of the first four games. IMPRESSIVE OPENING NIGHT With a 92-60 win against Nicholls State on Nov. 17, the Cougars opened the 2009-10 season in impressive fashion. That victory tied for the second biggest season-opening win since 1983-84 and tied for the fifth-biggest season-opening win ever. The 2005-06 team under head coach Tom Penders opened the year with a 131-62 win against Florida Tech to set the school record, while the 1961-62 squad enjoyed a 95-47 home win against UC Davis. The 1982-83 team started with a 104-63 win against Arizona in Houston s Kettle Classic. In 1962-63, Houston enjoyed an 86-52 win against Texas A&I, while the 1995-96 team began with a 91-59 victory against Houston Baptist. All six of these big season-opening wins were played at home in Houston. PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE ACCOLADES Senior guards Aubrey Coleman and Kelvin Lewis earned place on the 2009-10 Preseason All-Conference USA Team. In Coleman and Lewis, the Cougars boast the top two returning scorers in the league this season. The Cougar duo were named to the First Team in the league s head coaches poll and the media poll conducted by the Orlando Sentinel. Coleman led the team and finished third a year ago with 19.4 points per game, while Lewis ranked fourth with 18.0 points per contest. Coleman was named the league s Newcomer of the Year and earned a place on the All-Conference USA Team, while Lewis was a Third-Team honoree and a member of the All-Defensive Team. FIRST TIMERS Troy was the third first-time opponent that the Cougars have faced during the 2009-10 season. The Cougars enjoyed a 93-85 win against the Trojans on Monday at Hofheinz Pavilion. Houston faced Nicholls State for the first time in a 92-60 win at Hofheinz Pavilion on Nov. 17 and met San Diego on Nov. 27 during the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage,Alaska. For the 30th consecutive season, the Cougars will appear on television at least once during the 2009-10 campaign. This also marks the 12th straight season that at least three Cougar Basketball games will be televised. This season, the Cougars are scheduled to compete in 11 televised regular-season games. The Cougars opened their television schedule with a 2-1 mark at the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout on Nov. 26-28 in Anchorage, Alaska. All three games, including a win against No. 25 Oklahoma, were broadcast on CSS in Houston. From there, the Cougars play host to Mississippi State on CSS. HOME SWEET HOME The Cougars will compete 15 times in front of the hometown fans inside Hofheinz Pavilion during the regular season. This season, Houston is 3-0 inside their home facility following a 93-85 win against Troy on Dec. 14. A year ago, the Cougars finished 12-3 (.800) during home games. And those wins were not close with Houston winning by an average of 21.3 points per game. In more than 41 seasons at Hofheinz Pavilion, the Cougars have tallied a 445-129 (.775) all-time record. KEEPING THE FANS HAPPY The Cougars look to continue their winning ways inside Hofheinz Pavilion during the 2009-10 season. A year ago, the Cougars posted a 12-3 (.800) record at home, marking the fifth straight season that the Cougars recorded double-digit home wins. openers inside Hofheinz Pavilion. IRON MAN Senior guard Kelvin Lewis has been a regular in the lineup throughout his Cougar career. Entering Saturday s game against Mississippi State, the Fort Worth native has competed in each of the last 70 games with starts in each of the last 43 contests. Both streaks are the longest among current Cougar players. However, Lewis does much more than just compete in those games; he plays and finishes them. A year ago, Lewis led all players in Conference USA, competing an average of 36.81 minutes per game. In 2009-10, he leads Conference USA with 36.7 minutes per game. Lewis has played all 40 minutes during three of the last three games, boosting his career total in that category to 13 games. A CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK Senior guard Kelvin Lewis never needs to look into the stands to find his father during games; he only needs to check the Cougar bench. Kevin Lewis is in his fourth season at Houston in 2009-10 as the senior associate coach. The elder Lewis works closely with the Cougar post players and assists in all recruiting. The elder Lewis was a four-year letterman at SMU from 1982 to 1986, earning All-Southwest Conference honors as a senior. OFF THE COURT Senior forward Sean Coleman has been a reliable contributor for the Cougars, both on and off the court. A year ago, he was named to the 2009 Conference USA Men s Basketball All-Academic Team and earned a place on the C-USA Commissioner s Honor Roll. He became the Cougars first academic honoree since Bryan Shelton was named to the C-USA Commissioner s Honor Roll for the third straight season in 2004. Coleman, a sociology major, serves as the men s basketball representative on the Houston Student-Athlete Advisory Council. WELCOME TO HOUSTON The Cougars inked one player to a National Letter of Intent during the November signing period. Center Marial Dahl of Hillsborough Community College will join the Cougars as a junior in 2009-10. At 7-foot, 3-inches tall, he will be the tallest player in school history and only the third African to play for the Cougars. He ranks as one of the leading defensive players in the country, averaging eight rebounds and eight blocks per game. However, he is more than the smallest player on the 2009-10 team. He ranks as one of the shortest players to play in UH history. Guard Herbert Johnson was the shortest player in UH history, competing at 5-5 on the 1963-64 team. HOFHEINZ PAVILION HOME OF THE COUGARS Since opening its doors Dec. 1, 1969, Hofheinz Pavilion has provided the University of Houston Men s Basketball teams with one of the nation s most exciting collegiate atmospheres. Located on the UH campus at the corner of Cullen Boulevard and Holman Street, Hofheinz Pavilion has been a challenging environment for Cougar opponents during its history. The Cougars own an impressive 432-126 all-time record in their home facility with double-digit wins coming in 25 seasons, including each of the last four. In 2007-08, the program played a school-record 19 games in front of the hometown fans with wins in 17 of those, the second-highest season total in the history of the building. Nearly 3 million fans have poured into the facility to watch some of the greatest players in college basketball history and seen some of the most memorable games. With a rabid fan base, the Cougars reeled off a school record 43 consecutive home wins from 1982 to 1985 NAMESAKES On Jan. 6, 1996, the playing court was renamed for UH s legendary head coach Guy V. Lewis, who led the Cougars to 592 win, five Final Four berths, 14 NCAA Tournament appearances and five NIT berths during his 30-year career. That same night, the Cougars claimed a 69-67 win over No. 3 Memphis in the first game on the court that bears his name. The facility was named after Judge Roy Hofheinz, a businessman who gained world acclaim for conceiving and spearheading the city of Houston s construction of the Houston Astrodome. He and his wife Irene met as students at UH in 1929. The couple later created the Judge Roy Hofheinz Foundation, which contributed 1.5 million toward the construction of the facility. SEATING CAPACITY Theatre style seats encircle the court and provide excellent views from any location. Originally built with a capacity of more than 10,000, Hofheinz Pavilion underwent renovations which included the addition of 28 suites in 1998 that reduced capacity to its current mark of 8, 479. However, the facility remains one of college basketball s most daunting environments. POSTSEASON EVENTS Besides regular-season basketgall games, the facility also has hosted a variety of postseason events, including the NIT, Southwest Conference Tournament games from 1978 to 1980, the NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional in 1971 and 1978 and a quarterfinal game from the inaugural 2008 College Basketball Invitational. RENOVATIONS & USAGE The team s locker rooms have been renovated recently. Through a donation by alumni John and Rebecca Moores, the locker room was enlarged and equipped with oversized, personal lockers for each player. Theater-style seats later were added to the team s meeting area adjacent to the locker room. The multi-purpose facility is home for the Cougar Men s and Women s Basketball teams. In addition, it is used for other athletics and special events, concernts, convocations, commencement exercises, professional serminars, forums and other activities. Penders begins his sixth season as the head coach at the University of Houston in 2009-10 with eyes on the program s fourth postseason appearance during the last five years. Taking over a program that had posted double-digit wins only twice in the seven seasons before he arrived in 2004, Penders has led the Cougars to five straight winning seasons with at least 18 wins each year and four postseason berths With 102 victories through his first five seasons at UH, he compiled more wins during that stretch than any coach in program history. In addition, he became the first coach in school history to lead the Cougars to five straight seasons with at least 18 wins. He also added his name to the national records book as well. Earlier in the season, he competed in the 1,000th game of his collegiate career during a 77-72 win over C-USA rival UTEP on Jan. 19, 2008. Penders became only the 34th coach in NCAA history to reach 600 victories and only the 24th to have competed in at least 1,000 games. With his current win total, he stands fifth among active NCAA Division I coaches In addition, Penders joins Jim Calhoun as the only two active coaches who have coached 36 or more seasons. Calhoun in his 38th year at Connecticut. To date, he has compiled a 634-424 (.599) record in 36 seasons. That overall total includes 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, seven NIT berths and two College Basketball Invitational appearances. Beginning his coaching career at Tufts in 1971, Penders has worked at seven schools, tying an NCAA record. In addition, he has been the head coach at each stop, never serving as an assistant coach during his 34-year career. Before arriving at Houston, Penders compiled winning records at all but one stop before leaving. Although he departed Columbia with a 43-60 record following the 1977-78 season, he built a program that had won only five games the year before his arrival into one with back-toback winning seasons during his final two years. Throughout his coaching career, his teams not only won but captured a national audience with their record-setting styles of play. His teams at Texas and George Washington set school records for most points in a season and renewed fan interest at each school. With such an impressive body of work, Penders added another award to his trophy case in the summer of 2008. For his achievements on the court and his athletic accomplishments during his playing days, Penders was inducted into the Fairfield County (Conn.) Sports Hall of Fame. He graduated from Connecticut in 1967 with a bachelor s degree in marketing. Penders and his wife, Susie, have two children Tommy, Jr., a basketball coach at Angleton High School in Angleton, Texas, and Karli. He also has another daughter, Wendy.

vs. MISSISSIPPI STATE Penders has posted an 0-1 record against Mississippi State during his career with the lone decision coming on Jan. 3, 2009, at Starkville. Saturday s game will be the first time that Penders has faced Mississippi State at home. AT HOFHEINZ PAVILION Since his arrival for the 2004-05 season, Penders has turned Hofheinz Pavilion into a formidable place for all Cougar opponents. Penders Houston teams have posted a sparkling 68-12 (.850) record inside Hofheinz Pavilion, including a perfect 3-0 mark in 2009-10. Before Penders joined the UH program, only one Cougar team enjoyed a home schedule with three or fewer losses in a single season (1995-96 went 10-3) since 1992-93. Since Penders joined the Cougars, none of his teams have lost MORE than three home games in a season with at least 10 victories each year. Penders has led the Cougars to double-digit home wins in five consecutive seasons, a first since 1988-93. IN 100-POINT GAMES With their 100-93 win against No. 25 Oklahoma on Nov. 26 during the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, Penders improved to 75-9 (.893) all-time during games in which his team scored at least 100 points. His teams reached triple digits at least once every season from 1986 to 1999. In addition, his teams have won their last 19 games scoring at least 100 points. Penders has not lost a 100-point game since dropping a 106-105 decision on the road in overtime. Ironically, that loss came at the hands of the Houston Cougars in Hofheinz Pavilion on Feb. 1, 1995. at Houston: Penders Cougar teams have posted a perfect 5-0 record during games in which they reach triple digits. The Cougars enjoyed a 110-57 win over Alcorn State on Nov. 18 at Hofheinz Pavilion. IN REGULAR-SEASON TOURNAMENTS According to the best records available, Penders has posted a 47-44 (.516) all-time mark during regular-season tournaments following this season s 2-1 record at the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. Results from his three-year stint at Tufts (1971-74) were incomplete. at Great Alaska Shootout: This was Penders second visit to the Great Alaska Shootout. He has posted a 4-2 (.667) all-time record at that event. In 1983, his Fordham team went 2-1 at the event with wins againts USC and Alaska-Anchorage after a 62-61 loss to Arkansas. at Houston: Penders has posted an 8-7 (.533) all-time record during regular-season tournaments during his tenure at UH. The Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout marked the fifth regularseason tournament in which his teams have competed during his Houston career.
