ISSUE 1 VOLUME 3 2013 Winds THE NEWS OF THE HAWAII SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON FEBRUARY 2013 Winds Hawaii Sail & Power Squadron teaches the full USPS Boating Education curriculum in the classroom and on the water here in the Hawaiian Islands. Call 291-4338 for current classes. Mandatory Boating Education Course The State of Hawaii has passed the Mandatory Boating Education Course for vessel operation. The deadline to be certified is July 2014. The Hawaii Sail and Power Squadron is offering several ABC Boating Classes every month at various locations throughout Oahu. The squadron will be teaching neighbor island boaters this mandatory class so that the public will be compliant by the 2014 deadline. Another part of this is a regulation that any child under 16 cannot drive a boat unless they have gone through the class and are accompanied by an adult over 21 that has gone through the class. The fines for violating this new regulation will not more than $1,000.. FREE VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS Get a 2013 Inspection for your Boat A vessel safety check is a courtesy examination of a boat to verify the presence and operable condition of certain safety equipment required by state and federal regulations. The Vessel Examiner is a trained specialist and is a member of the US Power Squadrons or the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. They will also make certain recommendations and discuss safety related issues that will make boat owners safe boaters. For more information about the VSC program, to get a preview of the safety requirements or to schedule a VSC for your boat by one of our HSPS qualified Vessel Safety Examiners please call: (808) 391-2570

In this program, expired marine flares can be brought to POP (PACIFIC OCEAN PRODUCERS at PIER 38 on Nimitz Hwy) where they will be collected and transported to H-Power. At H-Power the flares will be disposed of and turned into electrical energy. This project culminates a long process trying to find the most practical and environmentally sound process for marine flare disposal.
