CREATE DANCE HISTORY CREATE A MEMORY Fredericksburg, Virginia Vol. 6 No.2 President s Letter by Wes Kirchner I hope we have finally seen the last of the snow. This winter has really given us some nasty weather. Although the weather has been bad, dedicated shaggers continued to come out to dance and have a good time. As most of you know we will no longer be dancing at Box Seats. Our new place to dance is Renato's located at 422 William and Prince Edward Streets. Our attendance at these dances will determine how long we stay here, so come down, and have some good food, drink and great music and dancing. Invite your friends, January/February Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6 Page 7 Page 8 Page 9 Page10 President s Letter Cyclone Party WOW! Thank You What s Up! Happy Feet Top 40 New Members Menu Steel City neighbors, and co-workers to join us on Tuesday nights. The first 2 months of this year have been trying, to say the least, but shaggers are a hardy group. As your President, I would like to thank everyone for their help, suggestions and advice. Your input is what your club needs to keep moving forward. February has been a busy month. The last week saw some of the BBC members at Twister's in Mooresville, N.C. for the A.C.S.C (Association of Carolina Shag Clubs) Winter Workshop. The workshop provided updates about concerns of all member clubs. One thing mentioned was the fact that many clubs in Myrtle Beach have gone or are going smoke free. So, if smoke has been an issue before, it will not be now. Before and after the workshops there was food, lessons, dancing and of course, adult beverages. On Saturday night we were given an exhibition by the National Shag Dance Championship Team. Ellen Taylor also danced with several of the team members and as always strutted her stuff. Both were truly a wonderful sight to see. The party came to a close on Sunday with breakfast and the Embers playing in the morning. March 11, 12, 13 - We have two of our club members Cathy Metcalf and Vaughn Royal, going to Myrtle Beach to compete in the Non Pro Division finals. Competition is held at The Spanish Galleon on Ocean Blvd. We wish Cathy and Vaughn the very best. 20th - Northern Virginia hosts the 12th annual Shag A Thon at Springfield Mall, noon to 4 pm, with all donations going to Capitol Hospice. Anyone wishing to pledge or donate can go to nvshag.org for info. 25, 26, 27, 28 - Boogie in the Burgh in Pittsburgh, Pa. Pro dancers, Craig and Heather Jennings, will conduct a workshop for this event and I hear it is a whopper of a party. So, Spring is coming and we would love to see some of those long-time members who have been hibernating. Come crowd the dance floor, make some new friends, and enjoy the music of our great DJ's. Keep up to date by checking out those weekly Bugle Calls. See you on the dance floor, Wes
----------------------------------------------- Vol. 6 No. 2 2010 ACSC Winter Workshop And Fall Cyclone Too Party What do you get when you take a very old skating rink that still has a smooth hardwood floor, add 700 shaggers, some delicious fried chicken, DJ Butch Metcalf, workshops given by Ellen Taylor and Jason and Holly Cagle, and all the free drinks you want? You get a Fantastic Party! Wes and I travelled down to Mooresville, NC, February 26-28, to attend the ACSC meeting and the Fall Cyclone Too Party, hosted by the Twister s Shag Club, and had a great time. We had never seen so many shag enthusiasts in one place. Try to envision 700 shag dancers lined up along the outside perimeter of a skating rink to watch the iconic Ellen Taylor dance with members of the National Shag Dance Team Champions, who were younger than her by about 40 years. What a show! These boys were exhausted and she walked off the floor with no huffing, but with her always gracious smile. The dance team gave us a fantastic, energetic performance and then stayed around to dance with the many eager partners there. The Twister s really know how to give a party. Included in our ticket price was non-stop drinks for 3 days, (these included Jello shooters brought around to you at your table on a cart) a huge buffet dinner on Saturday night, and a full, hot breakfast on Sunday morning. The DJ s played music non-stop and with Butch Metcalf, they also included Judy Collins, Roger Holcomb, Wilkie Whaley and Fast Eddie Thompson. If that s not enough, on Sunday morning, The Embers played till 1:00 pm. A fun weekend of great music and dancing, meeting some new fellow shaggers, and awesome food. Get ready for the next Twister s Fall Cyclone November 5-7, 2010. We understand they usually have a sell-out crowd of 900 shaggers. So, get your tickets early - we don t want to miss it! Wow, What A Weekend! By Audrey Borja that only begins to describe February 19-21, when Charlie & Jackie, all-time shag dance champions came to town. The Northern Va. Shag Club (NVSC) hosted Charlie Womble and Jackie McGee for the 13 th year to come from Myrtle Beach, S.C. to teach 3 workshops, provide private dance lessons and be part of a high spirited party on Saturday night. The workshops were well attended by both the NVSC members, folks from as far north as New Jersey and south as far as the Carolinas, and many of our own BBC. Dancers spent the weekend capturing all they could from the champions -attending the workshops, having private lessons, practicing, and going to the party on Saturday night. Private lessons and dance instructors workshops continued through Sunday. And, as usual the NVSC provided lots to eat on Saturday night. Charlie and Jackie did a shag exhibition at the party that dazzled us all. We felt that trying some of their foot work would give us similar results, but....uh.maybe not Oh well, it s a thought! The weekend is an annual event and we got to see old friends and make new friends. If you were not there, you missed a real beach party right in the heart of winter with the spirits of Myrtle Beach! **Maybe next year you too can come to this annual weekend watch for it!**
