Meet our Golf Pro Chris Pytell, PGA Class A Professional Skokie Park District Director of Instruction Chris Pytell is in his seventeenth year as the PGA Director of Golf Instruction at Skokie Sports Park. Since 1994, he has fueled his passion for teaching by conducting over 15,000 individual and group lessons. Chris believes that by maintaining his competitive edge, he will help his students achieve their full potential. A Chicago native, Chris won a number of junior golf tournaments and at 17, played in a national junior tournament with Tiger Woods. Since graduating from Southern Illinois University on a golf scholarship, Chris continues to play in 10-15 PGA tournaments annually; his best finish was third in a PGA tournament at Flossmoor Country Club. Additionally, he competed on the NGA Pro Tour in Florida. His personal best score was a 58 on a par 66. Chris has helped many junior golfers mature into competitive collegiate golfers. He enjoys instructing men, women, and junior golfers of all levels. Because he believes that the learning process accelerates when golf is taught at a simple level, his lessons concentrate on the fundamentals of the game. All golfers should take lessons from a PGA instructor in order to understand the fundamentals and how they are needed to create a more consistent golf swing, said Chris. Everyone can improve with a little patience and by practicing the right principles. To schedule a lesson call Chris at (773) 505-GOLF (4653) or email him at pytell@sbcglobal.net.
by Skokie Park District PGA Pro, Chris Pytell Personally, nothing feels more satisfying than when I launch a big drive down the fairway, especially when it lands 15-20 yards past my friends. Not only do I feel great, but that kind of advantage leads to better scoring opportunities. Think about it. Twenty extra yards per drive equates to an additional 280 yards per round. Interested in learning how to do it? When visiting Skokie Sports Park, introduce these three power techniques to your game and you will be on your way to hitting incredible drives, and lowering your scores. Legs! Your legs provide stability and balance in your setup. Get into an athletic setup by tilting forward from the hip joints 20 to 30 degrees. Then, bend your knees slightly to activate your upper leg muscles. Feeling it in your feet, put pressure into the ground in a balanced manner. Imagine what it would take to stand on a log without losing your balance. That s the feeling. Shoulders! Make an effort to turn your shoulders around your spine as much as possible but here s the catch. You have to keep your head as still as possible and your legs as stable as possible. You should feel like you are storing energy as you maximize your turn. I recommend spending additional time at home in front of a mirror, identifying any unnecessary head movement. Then Legs Again! The stability in your legs and extra shoulder turn will now provide a platform to unleash your power. In order to apply optimal force to the golf ball, you need to start by driving your legs towards the target. This shift of weight to your front foot automatically creates a vacuum-like effect, allowing the club speed to increase dramatically. Add the techniques above into your practice plan and you will hit longer off the tee and lower your scores, creating a feeling of pure satisfaction. Good luck!
