Here is some news from the summer and forward plans for Christmas and next Summer 2011 - Duke of Edinburgh s Award The summer 2011 Duke of Edinburgh s Award (DofE) expedition was a great success. 23 students and 4 teachers travelled to Tibet to trek in the Kham region for their Gold expedition. You may have heard the autonomous region of Tibet was closed around the time of HRH Dalai Lama s birthday which meant moving this group from Ganden Samye to a different region. The students were great and did really well and all achieved the award. There have been some lovely messages through Facebook since and photos too. Have you seen us on Facebook, do join the group if you would like to and share your pictures with the group. http://www.facebook.com/groups /235187356506209/ DofE 2012 As an Approved Activity Provider we are running a number of DofE expeditions next year including Everest Base Camp and Annapurna which are for individuals and groups. If you have a connection with a school or DofE group please pass this on to them. We want to get this information out to those who know us. 4 of 7 28/11/2011 20:32 Advanced Base Camp, Everest Tibet June 2012 You can also travel to Everest from the Tibet side. This trek is a very different experience to the Nepal side with the initial journey being across the Tibetan landscape by 4 wheel drive. The trek to Everest BC is straight forward and if you wish to go beyond and reach Advanced Base Camp at 6200 metres this is really close to the glacier so very interesting terrain. It is a high altitude to reach and remember Tibet is high as a country so by the time you start the trek you will be well used to the altitude. For those interested in the Buddhist culture this is a great trip as well for the numerous opportunities to visit monasteries as well as Lhasa the capital city. Further details can be seen at: Everest View from Base Camp, Tibet http://www.walkingandclimbing.co.uk/treks /Advanced_Everest_Base_Camp.html Mount Kailash Trek July 2012 Kailash means 'Treasure or Saint of Snow Mountain' in Tibetan. The name originates from the year-round snow on its peak. Mt. Kailash is the highest peak in the massive Gangdise mountain range at an altitude over 6,600 metres. The stunning peak is very pointed and looks like a pyramid piercing the sky. Many pilgrims of different faiths visit this mountain to walk around the mountain. It is said that to walk one circle around the mountain can atone for all the sins committed throughout one's lifetime. This trek is an 18 day trip and includes time in Lhasa the capital of Tibet, visits to a number of monasteries as well as the trek around Mount Kailash.
