of 7 28/11/2011 20:32 NEWSLETTER October 2011 Hello Everyone! year. Enjoy!! Here is some news from the summer and forward plans for Christmas and next Summer 2011 - Duke of Edinburgh s Award The summer 2011 Duke of Edinburgh s Award (DofE) expedition was a great success. 23 students and 4 teachers travelled to Tibet to trek in the Kham region for their Gold expedition. You may have heard the autonomous region of Tibet was closed around the time of HRH Dalai Lama s birthday which meant moving this group from Ganden Samye to a different region. The students were great and did really well and all achieved the award. There have been some lovely messages through Facebook since and photos too. Have you seen us on Facebook, do join the group if you would like to and share your pictures with the group. http://www.facebook.com/groups /235187356506209/ DofE 2012 As an Approved Activity Provider we are running a number of DofE expeditions next year including Everest Base Camp and Annapurna which are for individuals and groups. If you have a connection with a school or DofE group please pass this on to them. We want to get this information out to those who know us. It is very inspiring to see the impact on the young people of completing expeditions like this; it is a great education for them in their life. For full details of DofE expeditions please follow this link: http://www.walkingandclimbing.co.uk/dofe/open_award.html

of 7 28/11/2011 20:32 TREKKING Christmas Trek 2011 Special Offer 600 As a new trip we are running a Christmas trek this year. It will be 10 days including travel time and at a special price of 600. The trek is in the beautiful Annapurna range and you will get some time to be in Kathmandu and Pokhara staying in a good hotel at the start and end of the holiday. The trek is suitable for all levels so ideal for keen walkers, families and those who simply love the mountains. Christmas day will be at Ghorepani and you will see the wonderful views from Pun Hill which are simply stunning. It is a trek and a celebration of Christmas, and priced like this as it is low season and a good time to get out to Nepal. Full itinerary and details are available through this link: http://www.walkingandclimbing.co.uk/treks /xmas_trek.html Hope you can come!!

of 7 28/11/2011 20:32 Machhapuchhre at dawn Everest Base Camp Trek - April 2012 The famous Everest base camp trek is a must for all you keen walkers and trekkers. If you are reasonably fit and in good health you should be able to reach Base Camp. It is a wonderful trek and to see Everest is outstanding. This Everest Base Camp trek is the south side of Everest. This is one of the most popular trekking routes in the Himalayas and when you do this you will see why. After a couple of days in Kathmandu you will trek from Lukla village up to the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar along side the Dudh Kosi river valley. Time is spent acclimatizing here before continuing through the villages of Tengboche and Dingboche and on to Everest Base Camp. On this trek we also take you to Kalapathar, which is the very best place for amazing views (and photos) of Everest and the Base Camp. If this is a trip you have been meaning to do, then make 2012 the year you do it. You will feel amazing to realize this dream and experience the highest mountain in the world. http://www.walkingandclimbing.co.uk/treks /everest_basecamp_kalapathar.html Everest from Kalapathar

of 7 28/11/2011 20:32 Advanced Base Camp, Everest Tibet June 2012 You can also travel to Everest from the Tibet side. This trek is a very different experience to the Nepal side with the initial journey being across the Tibetan landscape by 4 wheel drive. The trek to Everest BC is straight forward and if you wish to go beyond and reach Advanced Base Camp at 6200 metres this is really close to the glacier so very interesting terrain. It is a high altitude to reach and remember Tibet is high as a country so by the time you start the trek you will be well used to the altitude. For those interested in the Buddhist culture this is a great trip as well for the numerous opportunities to visit monasteries as well as Lhasa the capital city. Further details can be seen at: Everest View from Base Camp, Tibet http://www.walkingandclimbing.co.uk/treks /Advanced_Everest_Base_Camp.html Mount Kailash Trek July 2012 Kailash means 'Treasure or Saint of Snow Mountain' in Tibetan. The name originates from the year-round snow on its peak. Mt. Kailash is the highest peak in the massive Gangdise mountain range at an altitude over 6,600 metres. The stunning peak is very pointed and looks like a pyramid piercing the sky. Many pilgrims of different faiths visit this mountain to walk around the mountain. It is said that to walk one circle around the mountain can atone for all the sins committed throughout one's lifetime. This trek is an 18 day trip and includes time in Lhasa the capital of Tibet, visits to a number of monasteries as well as the trek around Mount Kailash. Further details at: http://www.walkingandclimbing.co.uk/treks/lhasa_and_mount_kailash_trek.html Autumn 2012 Treks include: Helambu Walk 2 weeks September/October http://www.walkingandclimbing.co.uk/treks/helambu_walk.html Annapurna Trek - September http://www.walkingandclimbing.co.uk/treks/annapurna_sanctuary.html

of 7 28/11/2011 20:32 Everest Base Camp - October http://www.walkingandclimbing.co.uk/treks/everest_basecamp_kalapathar.html CLIMBING Unclimbed Peak Langtang region, Nepal. March 2012 We have an Unclimbed Peak lined up to climb next spring. We are very excited about this first ascent adventure where we will take a group 8 people maximum to climb a Himalayan peak that has never been climbed before. The peak is in the Langtang Region and over 6000 metres so you can see this is quite a significant mountain in height although not technical. For full details: http://www.walkingandclimbing.co.uk/treks/unclimbed_peak.html Mera Peak March/April 2012 Mera is the highest trekking peak in Nepal at 6476 metres. It is straight forward and not technical so if you are up for a challenge then Mera is a great trip for you. We were there last spring and the quote below says it all. For full details: http://www.walkingandclimbing.co.uk/treks/mera_peak.html May I take this opportunity to thank your company for an outstanding trip. Kalsang and all his team were superb, completely committed and the best team on that Mountain. I certainly look forward to climbing with this group of professional people again. It is a credit to Kalsang and his team to be the only team to summit that day. Had we been in the any of the other teams we certainly would not have summited that day. Mark Brown.
