The 2018 Holiday Committee of Celebrate Frederick, Inc. would like to invite you to a creative competition in two mediums gingerbread and holiday wreaths. Our Annual Scents & Sweets Competition & Auction is set for Thursday, November 29 th in the gymnasium of the William R. Talley Recreation Center, 121 N. Bentz Street, Frederick, MD. In the spirit of the holiday season, we will be conducting a silent auction in conjunction with the competition to raise funds for Celebrate Frederick. NOTE! - First Place Prize Winners, Professional Entries and those entries entered in the silent auction are required to leave their pieces at the Talley Center thru Sunday, December 2 nd for display and silent auction at the Candlelight House Tour Hospitality Center scheduled for Saturday, December 1 st and Sunday, December 2 nd. COMPETITION & SILENT AUCTION INFORMATION The competition will take place on Thursday, November 29 th in the gymnasium of the William R. Talley Recreation Center, 121 N. Bentz Street, Frederick, MD, and opens to the public at 5:30 PM. Both amateurs and professionals alike are invited to participate in this annual event showcasing the holiday season. COMPETITION - Competition winners are decided by a panel of judges and popular vote. The announcement of winners will take place at approximately 6:45 PM. Cash awards will be given for amateur and professional first place finishers in several categories across the competition. SILENT AUCTION - The silent auction will begin at 5:30 PM on Thursday, November 29 th and conclude at 4 PM on Sunday, December 2 nd. Auction winners will be contacted to arrange to pick up and payment. Child Individual - $5 Child Group/Teen- $10 Amateur Gingerbread/Wreath - $10 Professional Gingerbread/Wreath - $20 Applications All applications must be received by the Office of Special Events no later than 4 PM on Monday, November 19 th. SCENTS & SWEETS COMPETITION RULES & REQUIREMENTS The Holiday Committee, the organizers of the Scents & Sweets Competition, is a sub-committee of Celebrate Frederick Inc., which is a non-profit, non-partisan and non-political organization. It does not promote any individual, business, social, commercial or political purpose. Celebrate Frederick Inc. is a dynamic organization comprised of City staff, volunteers and the corporate community who offer free or low cost events that showcase Frederick through the arts. Celebrate Frederick Inc. and its sub-committees are an independent organization. I. Concept a. Gingerbread and Wreath entries should reflect the general mood of The Holidays. II. Authority of the Committee a. The Scents & Sweets Sub-Committee reserves the right to refuse any entry upon arrival which does not, for whatever reason, adhere to the entry requirements of the Committee as stated below. b. Artists/Groups agree to abide by all entry requirements and decisions of The Scents & Sweets Sub-Committee. Any misrepresentation or failure to abide by the Sub-Committee requirements is grounds for removal from the competition. Decision by the Sub-Committee is final and not subject to review by any other body. c. No artist/group will be allowed to enter the competition that did not meet the application deadline or fails to provide proof of approval by The Scents & Sweets Sub-Committee at the scheduled entry submission date. III. Application a. All applications must be postmarked by or turned in to the Office of Special Events, 121 North Bentz Street, Frederick, MD 21701 by Monday, November 19 th. b. No late applications will be accepted. c. An entry fee must be included in the form of cash or check made payable to Celebrate Frederick. IV. Award and Recognition a. Each participant in the Child (8-12) and Child Group Gingerbread Category will receive a participation ribbon. b. V. Entry Submission, Display & Pickup a. Approved entries are to be hand delivered to the gymnasium in the William R. Talley Recreation Center, 121 N. Bentz Street, in Frederick, MD on Thursday, November 29 th between 10 AM and 3 PM. b. Entries will be on display at the William R. Talley Recreation Center on Thursday, November 29 th from 5:30 to approximately 8 PM. NOTE - First Place Prize Winners, Professional Entries and those entries entered in the silent auction are required to remain on display through Sunday, December 2 nd at the Candlelight House Tour Hospitality Center located in the Talley Center gymnasium. All other entries should be taken immediately following the reception. c. Pick Up: i. First Place Prize Winners, Professional Entries and those entries entered in the silent auction - Monday, December 3 rd, 10 AM - 3 PM ii. All other Entries - Immediately following the reception on Thursday, November 29 th iii. NOTE - All entries not removed at the scheduled time will become the property of The Holiday Committee and will be disposed of. VI. Entry Requirements a. Origin of Work i. All entries must be original in design and personal execution. b. Theme & Color i. All entries should reflect the theme of The Holidays. ii. Gingerbread structures are not limited to houses. Additional structures, such as churches or historic sites, will be considered as well. c. Guidelines i. Gingerbread Entries 1. Media - Gingerbread House must be constructed of gingerbread dough made from scratch. Child individual or group entries are given the option of using a kit for construction. 2. Size - a) All entries must be three dimensional. b) The base of all entries must not exceed 25 l x 25 w. These dimensions include all landscaping and surrounding figures. c) There are no height restrictions on each entry. ii. Wreaths 1. Media - a) All wreaths must be original and handmade. Pre-decorated, store bought wreaths will not be accepted. b) Wreaths can be constructed exclusively or a combination of live and artificial flowers and greens, or other materials. Perishable food items are prohibited. 2. Size - a) Wreaths must be of a shape so that they have a center hole with a minimum diameter of 4. b) Wreaths must be a minimum of 12 diameter, and must be no larger than 28 diameter. 3. Weight - Wreaths cannot exceed 5 lbs. Entries weighing more than 5 lbs. require prior approval by the Scents and Sweets Competition Committee. 4. Secure all decorations firmly to the wreath base. Coated floral wire is ideal! No free standing decorations will be allowed.

5. Wreaths may not be plugged into an electrical outlet. Any wreaths with electrical components must be self-contained (i.e. battery operated lights.) 6. Entries will be displayed on a standard wreath hook, easel or upright flat surface. Wreaths must have a hook affixed to the top past the midline as they may be displayed on a stand or flat upright surface, if needed. VII. Judging a. Judging will be based on the entries which best reflect the holiday spirit. b. All winners will be decided by a panel of judges and the popular vote. VIII. Silent Auction & Proceeds a. Auction i. The silent auction will take place at the William R. Talley Recreation Center on Thursday, November 29 th, 5:30 PM thru Sunday, December 2 nd, 4 PM. ii. All pieces will be auctioned at a minimum bid TBD. iii. At conclusion of the auction, payment will be taken in the form of cash, check or charge prior to any gingerbread or wreath being removed from the premises. b. Proceeds from the auction will benefit Celebrate Frederick. c. All professional wreaths and gingerbread entries must be included in the Silent Auction.
