CSUB was just 1-for-12 from behind the arc while the Broncos knocked down eight triples and shot 50 percent from the field. The Runners got within one point with less than 50 seconds remaining in the contest but just could not quite catch up. BRUINS TAKE DOWN SHORTHANDED RUNNERS: Senior Christine Kepenekian led the Runners in scoring for the fourth time this season with 17 points, but the UCLA Bruins handed CSUB a 47 point defeat in Pauley Pavilion Wednesday evening, 104 57. With juniors Phynique Allen (ankle) and Tiffany Belt (hand) sitting out, CSUB had only nine active players as they took on a member of the Pac 10 for the first time in program history. Sitting back in a 2 3 zone, the Runners attempted to force the Bruins to beat them from the outside. However the zone allowed UCLA to get inside for second chance points as the Bruins tallied 30 points on 29 offensive rebounds. Katie Williams reached double figures for the first time this season, tallying 14 points in 35 minutes. Morgan Sason had 11 points with three rebounds in 35 minutes of work. THE WRONG STATS: Wednesday s 47 point loss to UCLA marked the largest defeat in CSUB history. The 104 points UCLA scored is the fourth highest total the Runners have ever allowed. DOUBLE FIGURES: Six different Roadrunners have scored in double figures this season, led by Christine Kepenekian who has six double-digit performances. Phynique Allen had scored in double figures four consecutive games until she was injured against Idaho. Kelley Tarver has also recorded four games with 10+ points. Last season nine different players reached the double figure scoring plateau. Morgan Saso and Kepenekian are the only two players so far to record double-doubles in points and rebounds. IT FITS: The Runners are 3 0 this season when shooting better than their opponents and are 0 3 when shooting worse. CSUB has led going into the final five minutes of a contest during all three of its wins while it has trailed in the last five minutes during all three losses. The Roadrunners are also a perfect 3 0 when it reaches the foul line more times than their opponents. HOLDING 60: After holding the CS Northridge Matadors to 54 points on Nov. 22, the Roadrunners now hold a perfect 75 0 all time record when keeping opponents under 60 points. ALL TOURNAMENT: Kelley Tarver averaged 23.5 points against Idaho and UMKC and was named to the Courtyard by Marriott San Luis Obispo Holiday Beach Classic All Tournament team. She was joined by UMKC s Chanzy Morris, Idaho s Yinka Olorunnife and Cal Poly s Lisa McBride and Megan Harrison. NEW FOES: Eight new opponents await the Roadrunners in 2009. CSUB faces Houston Baptist, Idaho, UMKC, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Pacific, Saint Mary s and UCLA for the first time. WAITING FOR HISTORY: After becoming the only school in NCAA history to make the NCAA tournament every year of its existence while competing in Division II, the Runners will have to wait two more seasons before it can hope to lay the same claim as a Division I school. CSUB will be NCAA Tournament eligible for the 2010 11 season. 300 IN SIGHT: CSUB Head Coach Tim La Kose is scheduled to surpass 300 career victories this season. He stands seven wins away from the milestone and could reach it as early as Dec. 21. In order to accomplish this feat, the Runners would have to defeat Saturday s opponent Santa as well as Big 12 members Nebraska and Oklahoma and Pac 10 foe Oregon State. media relations copy services provided by Ultrex

THE ROAD TO DIVISION I In May of 2005, California State University, Bakersfield President Dr. Horace Mitchell announced that the University was initiating the process of moving the highly regarded CSUB athletics program from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I status. For the Roadrunners, the 2005 06 academic year was the first in a five year process of reclassification set forth by the NCAA. Should they successfully complete the process, the Roadrunners would become a full NCAA Division I member in 2010 11. The move dovetailed nicely with the University s emphasis on excellence in all CSUB disciplines and programs. In fact, the goal set forth in 2004 was to make CSUB the top campus in the CSU system within 10 years. The move is not unprecedented. Many of CSUB s former rivals, including Cal Poly, UC Riverside, Cal State Northridge and UC Davis have made the jump in recent years. In fact, all nine of the current Big West Conference members began as NCAA Division II institutions. To take that one step further, DIVISION all Big West Conference members except UC Irvine were members Iof the California Collegiate Athletic Association before making the jump to NCAA Division I status. Other former CCAA members who successfully made the jump to NCAA Division I include San Diego State, Fresno State, San Jose State and Pepperdine University. Moving to NCAA Division I status is not automatic. Beginning with an exploratory year, (which CSUB completed in 2005 06), institutions must complete a five year process to full NCAA Division I membership. Below is a year by year breakdown of the steps CSUB will take on the road to Division I: 2005 06: Exploratory Year Completed 2006 07 Completed Considered NCAA Division II for scheduling against Division I opponents. Considered Division I when scheduling against Division II opponents. Compliance with all DI minimum contest requirements. Submit formal application and fee to the NCAA. Submit a strategic plan based on the plan submitted during exploratory year. Apply Division I legislation in all areas except scheduling. Submit an annual report. CSUB s NCAA Division I Timeline 2007 08 Completed Considered NCAA Division I against all opponents. Full compliance with all NCAA Division I legislation and membership requirements, including scholarship minimums and Division I scheduling. Submit an annual report and updated strategic plan based on feedback from previous year. 2008 09 Attendance at NCAA Convention required by CEO, AD, SWA, FAR and Compliance Coordinator. Completion of NCAA athletics certification orientation visit. Submit an annual report and updated strategic plan based on feedback from previous year. 2009 10 Successfully complete an NCAA athletics certification self study and evaluation visit. Submit an annual report and updated strategic plan based on feedback from previous year. 2010 11 Full NCAA Division I Membership Should CSUB successfully navigate the five year transition process, it will become a full NCAA Division I member in July of 2010.

RUNNERS 85, UC Irvine 63 November 25, 2008 Irvine, Calif. BAKERSFIELD, Calif. Senior Christine Kepenekian poured in a game high 26 points but the Roadrunners fell to the defending WAC Champion Fresno State Bulldogs, 97 88, in both team s season openers. Kepenekian also led the team with nine rebounds, five coming on the offensive end of the court. Fresno State jumped out of the gates early and built up an 18 point advantage late in the first half, fueled by nine three pointers. Bailey Amundsen was a perfect 4 4 from downtown and finished the contest tied for a team high of 17 with Jaleesa Ross. Amundsen also pulled down a game best 12 rebounds. With momentum on the Bulldog s side, it looked as though the Runners were in for a repeat performance of last season s 43 point defeat at the hands of Fresno State. However, a 20 2 second half run catapulted the Roadrunners into the lead with a little over 12 minutes left in the game on senior Tarver would finish the contest with seven points on 3 5 shooting. Classmate Krista Arase added 10 of her 16 points in the second half which included a few skillful layups. Arase was CSUB s top outside threat, connecting on 4 6 from deep. Fresno State pulled away late, outscoring the Roadrunners 36 27 to seal the victory. The Bulldogs shot an even 50 percent from the field, 33 66, after starting off the game on a torrid pace of 58.1 percent including 65.3 percent from three point territory. The Runners finished at 48.6 percent, 36 74, and hit eight of 19 threes (42.1%). One of the largest disparities came at the charity stripe where Fresno State hit 78.3 percent compared to CSUB s 50 percent. CSUB completed the weekend basketball sweep of the Cal State Northridge Matadors winning 74-59. Senior Christine Kepenekian, fresh off her 26-point effort in the opener against Fresno State, remained hot for the Runners as she knocked down a trio of three pointers from well behind the extended men s threepoint arc in the first half. She also pulled down three offensive rebounds and blocked a shot on a drive by Northridge s Kayla Rutherford. CSUB went on a 15-4 run late in the half and led by as many as 11 after trailing by five twice in the opening frame. The Matadors would make a late charge to close the halftime gap to eight, 35-27. Early in the second half, turnovers plagued the Roadrunners as they lost the ball on four of their first six possessions. Northridge seized the momentum and went on a 10-2 run. Kepenekian and Arase each finished with game-highs of 16 to lead CSUB. Kepenekian s minutes were down in the second half after receiving a cut underneath her right eye. She still grabbed a team-best eight rebounds, half coming on the offensive glass. Arase was 4 for -5 from behind the arc. Tarver added 15 points for the Runners while Allen had 10 after sitting most of the first half. A late first half run carried over to the second as the Roadrunners defeated Big West opponent UC Irvine, 85-63. CSUB (2-1) outscored the Anteaters (1-2) 25-2 during a six minute stretch that carried over from late in the first half. Senior Christine Kepenekian led all scorers as she scored 24 points on 10-for-17 shooting. She also grabbed six boards. Seniors Kelley Tarver (14), Krista Arase (11), and junior Phynique Allen (17) all reached double-digit point totals for CSUB. Phynique Allen provided the Roadrunners first four points of the contest as she sunk two free throws and converted a layup on a secondary break. Christine Kepenekian made a few tough layups, driving through contact for the buckets. A couple of well placed passes gave senior Morgan Saso easy looks underneath. The first half saw six ties and four lead changes. In the second, CSUB stole the opening possession and proceeded to run off seven consecutive points, forcing an Irvine timeout less than a minute and a half into the frame. Tarver made another layup to give CSUB a 10 point lead. The Anteaters would run the advantage down to five points before Allen converted an old fashioned threepoint play and Kepenekian found herself in the right place at the right time to put in an easy pass of a deflected ball on a fast break. The Roadrunner lead would not be threatened again as CSUB controlled the pace down the stretch, pulling away for the 22-point victory. Morgan Saso tied for the game-high of seven rebounds and contributed nine points in 25 minutes off the bench. CSUB outrebounded Irvine, 40-30, and forced 22 turnovers with eight steals.
