USC IN THE NATION (AS OF 11/27) AP POLL USA TODAY COACHES POLL NCAA RPI RV RV 59 LAST WEEK USC tallied two more wins on the road last week in a victorious effort at the Nugget Classic in Reno. On Friday, USC played through its tightest game of the season and proved up to the test. After Utah State sneaked into the lead in the fourth, the Trojans mounted an 11-0 late scoring rally that tugged them in to the lead to stay, sewing up a 55-46 victory over the Aggies at the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev., on Friday night. In a game of runs and skids on both ends, USC final push came at just the right time. The Trojans finished up shooting 37.3 percent from the floor while netting five 3-pointers. Utah State hit at a 36.2 percent clip and landed six threes, but USC s interruptive defense proceeded 23 points off 23 Utah State turnovers to help the Trojan cause. USC also finished up ahead on the boards 35-33, thanks to at least one rebound from every Trojan who hit the court. USC s scoring effort was led by 16-point efforts from Minyon and Mariya Moore, while the sisters combined for nine steals. On the boards, Minyon Moore and Asiah Jones hauled in a team-best six rebounds apiece. Utah State received a team-high 14 points from Steph Gorman and 11 from Emmie Harris, who combined for the Aggies six 3-pointers. On Sunday, the Trojans faced off against the event host Nevada. In that contest, USC extended its perfect start to the season with another commanding victory a 72-51 decision over the Wolfpack. The win was highlighted by strong performances from All- Tournament Team selections Mariya Moore and Cheyanne Wallace. Wallace led the pack with 19 points and nine rebounds, going 2-for-2 from 3-point range and 5-of-6 from the stripe. Moore shouldered four fouls and yet still managed to finish with 12 points to go with seven assists and six rebounds. Also hitting double digits for the Trojan cause was Shalexxus Aaron, who drained three 3-pointers while finishing with 17 points and six rebounds. It was an uplifting effort for the Trojans, who had two top scorers sidelined with injury as Aliyah Mazyck and Minyon Moore were out for this one. USC finished up shooting 45.5 from the floor while outrebounding the Wolfpack 45-33. Nevada shot 30.2 percent from the floor, and was led by 14 points from Jade Redmon to go with 12 from Terae Briggs and 11 from Emma Torbert. SCOUTING FRESNO STATE The Bulldogs are 3-1 overall after a 65-48 win over Milwaukee and a 70-61 win over UT Arlington last week. Candice White leads Fresno State in scoring with 15.5 points per game, and Maddi Utti and Kristina Cavey lead on the boards with 6.0 rebounds per game each. In a series dating back to 1971, USC is 7-5 all-time against Fresno State. USC beat the Bulldogs 68-56 when the teams last met in 2014 at Galen Center. SCOUTING UNLV The Rebels are 1-4 overall after beating UC Santa Barbara 69-51 and losing to Middle Tennessee 66-62 last week. Katie Powell leads UNLV with 16.0 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. In a series dating back to 1974, USC is 3-6 all-time against UNLV. The Rebels beat the Trojans 77-66 when the teams last met in 2016 in Las Vegas. INJURY REPORT Aliyah Mazyck (ankle) and Kayla Overbeck (knee) missed USC s Nov. 23 game vs. Utah State due to injury. Mazyck and Minyon Moore (wrist) were sidelined by injury on Nov. 25 at Nevada. SEASON OPENER USC s season opener was highlighted by debut performances from six new Trojans. Competing for USC for the first time, all six Trojans scored in a 73-55 win over visiting UC Riverside. A relative veteran at Troy, junior Minyon Moore led the way with a double-double the fifth of her USC career on a team-high 16 points and 12 rebounds to go with seven assists, as USC opened the 2018-19 campaign with a 1-0 mark. USC gripped a 12-point lead during the first half, but it would melt away as UC Riverside battled back to level it at 30-30 by halftime. That s when the Trojans turned the tide. USC outscored the Highlanders 27-12 in the third quarter to open things up, and the Trojans finished out the game shooting 44.6 percent from the floor to outpace UC Riverside s 38.3 outing. USC also outrebounded its visitors, 37-30, and went 50 percent from beyond the arc (10-of-20). One rebound shy of double digits at halftime, Minyon Moore collected three more in the second half while pumping out 12 second-half points. The first Trojan to hit double digits in the game, however, was senior transfer Mariya Moore, who shined in her Trojan debut with 11 points with three 3-pointers landed. Joining the 3-point parade for USC were two more Women of Troy hitting the court for the first time. Senior transfer Cheyanne Wallace went 2-for-2 from long distance, while redshirt freshman Shalexxus Aaron also tallied two treys in her first USC action. Junior transfer Kayla Overbeck may not have spotted up from beyond the arc, but she made her presence known down low, dumping in 10 points as she, too, hit the floor as a Trojan for the first time. Another newcomer to the paint at USC was freshman Jillian Archer, who provided five points on the night. True freshman guard Deisree Caldwell, meanwhile, had two points and two steals in her USC debut. In all, every USC player who got in the game would score in the victory. Junior Ja Tavia Tapley was just short of double digits in finishing with nine points. Back in action after redshirting last season with injury was redshirt sophomore Asiah Jones, who had four points along with five boards tonight. CULTURE SHIFT As the Women of Troy enter a new season of action, the energy and excitement generated by USC s combination of Trojan veterans and fresh faces is palpable. Along with the return of Pac-12 honorees

Aliyah Mazyck and Minyon Moore, there are six Women of Troy who will be seeing their first game action in a USC jersey this year. Transfers Mariya Moore, Kayla Overbeck and Cheyanne Wallace are three of those six Women of Troy set to log their first minutes at USC. Shalexxus Aaron, meanwhile, is finally off the sidelines and in full force after sitting out the 2017-18 season with injury, and will add athleticism to the back court. The other two newbies are true freshmen. Forward Jillian Archer and guard Desiree Caldwell are USC s two true freshmen this season. SENIOR STRENGTH USC s senior class offers a window into the new formula that head coach Mark Trakh is working with this season a blend of players with diverse talents and diverse experience. Aliyah Mazyck is USC s recordholder for single-season 3-pointers made and is coming off a junior season where she averaged 16.5 points per game. She and fellow senior Marguerite Effa enter their fourth and final seasons at USC, standing out as the vets of the group. Seniors Mariya Moore and Cheyanne Wallace, meanwhile, bring another angle of experience to the picture. Moore was a decorated player at Louisville, then transferred to USC last season. This year will mark her first game action as a Trojan. Wallace also opted to change course to USC, coming across town from Loyola Marymount to get in the mix this season as a grad transfer. POWER AT THE POST USC has two standout juniors lined up for duty as veterans on the post. Ja Tavia Tapley was the sixth man last year, and her 6-3 frame and incredible athleticism will be back for more this season. Newly crowned for her junior season at USC is Vanderbilt transfer Kayla Overbeck, whose waiver to compete immediately as a Trojan was granted by the NCAA. An All-SEC honoree as a freshman, Overbeck adds yet another valuable depth charge to the post for USC this season. Forward Danijela Milisic and guard Kyerstin Galloway round out the USC roster. MAZYCK MAKES THE LIST USC senior Aliyah Mazyck s notable junior season has attracted national attention, as she has been selected as one of the country s top 20 shooting guards recognized on the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Preseason Watch List. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and Women s Basketball Coaches Association announced the list today (Oct. 23). A finalist for the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year last year, Mazyck was a 2018 Pac-12 All-Defensive Team and All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention pick as a junior. That year, the Charlotte, N.C., native set a USC single-season record with 86 threes made. A full-time starter, she averaged 16.5 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game. Now a senior captain for the Women of Troy, Mazyck has stepped into a leadership role that will help the speedster s upward trajectory on the Pac-12 and the national radars this season. Named after the first player, male or female, named to the All-America Team in four straight college seasons, the annual Ann Meyers Drysdale Award in its second year recognizes the top shooting guard in women s NCAA Division I college basketball. MARIYA ON NAISMITH WATCH LIST As USC senior Mariya Moore sets up for her first and final season of competition with the Women of Troy, the talented guard has earned national acclaim as one of 50 women s basketball players selected to the Citizen Naismith Trophy Watch List. A transfer from Louisville last year, Moore sat out the 2017-18 season due to NCAA transfer rules. Now active with the Women of Troy, Moore has hit double digits in both of USC s opening games, averaging 12.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game to go along with five 3-pointers landed and seven assists made in USC s 2-0 start to the season. At Louisville, Moore earned 2016 WBCA All-America Honorable Mention, was a 2016 All-ACC First Team honoree and a 2015 and 2017 All-ACC Second Team selection. The Citizen Naismith Trophy Watch List was released today (Nov. 12) by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. In February, a midseason 30 list will be release, followed by 10 semifinalists for the award to be named on March 4, 2019. Four finalists will be revealed on March 22, with the winner of the 2019 Citizen Naismith Trophy for Women s Player of the Year to be announced on April 6, 2019. The last USC player to be named to a Naismith Watch List was Cassie Harberts in 2013-14. Prior to Harberts, Jacki Gemelos and Briana Gilbreath were both selected to the Naismith Early Season Watch List at the start of the 2011-12 season. In 2006-07, Shay Murphy was on the preseason watch list, and Ebony Hoffman was a preseason candidate in 2002-03. USC already boasts two Naismith Trophy winners in three-time honoree Cheryl Miller (1984, 1985, 1986) and Lisa Leslie (1994). CLEAR BAGS, PLEASE! LAST SEASON USC finished up the 2017-18 season with a 20-11 overall record in head coach Mark Trakh s return to the helm of the program. In Pac-12 play, USC finished in seventh place at 7-7 and fell in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament. Senior Kristen Simon picked up a place on the All-Pac-12 Team, while junior Aliyah Mazyck earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention and was a finalist for Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. She and sophomore Minyon Moore both landed on the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team. Along the way, Mazyck also set a new USC record for single-season 3-pointers made with 86. Page 4 HEAD COACH MARK TRAKH Mark Trakh, who led USC and Pepperdine to NCAA Tournament appearances before guiding New Mexico State to three NCAA berths, returned to USC as its head women s basketball coach for the 2017-18 season. We are thrilled to welcome Mark back to USC, athletic director Lynn Swann said in the announcement on April 21, 2016. It was important for us to hire a coach who really wanted to be at USC, who truly cares about our student-athletes and who believes in the Trojan way of excelling. We found that coach in Mark Trakh. He has the experience and maturity to help our young team grow and develop. Mark is a great teacher of the game. Players enjoy playing for him. He is a very effective recruiter. And he has a knack for taking teams to the NCAA Tournament, which we look for him to continue doing. In his first season back at Troy, Trakh s 2017-18 Trojans played an inspired season, notching a 20-win campaign but just missing out on an NCAA selection. USC went 20-11 overall last season, beating three ranked opponents and finishing 9-9 in the competitive Pac-12. As a college coach, Trakh has an overall record of 413-278 in 23 years, with eight NCAA Tournament trips, seven regular season championships and five conference Coach of the Year honors. Trakh coached the Women of Troy for five seasons (2005-09). Despite a tenure hampered by injuries to key players that stalled promising seasons, Trakh s USC teams won at least 17 games all five seasons, advanced to a pair of NCAA tourneys (getting to the second round in 2005 and 2006 before falling to the eventual NCAA runner-up both seasons), reached at least the semifinals of the Pac-10 Tourney four times (his 2009 team was a finalist), never finished below fifth in the Pac-10 and went 8-3 against crosstown rival UCLA. His debut 2005 team won 20 games, tied for second in the Pac-10 race and made USC s first NCAA Tournament appearance in seven years, where it lost on a last-second basket in the second round. His Women of Troy players made various All-Pac-10 teams 23 times and Pac-10 All- Academic squads 14 times, and he turned out two All-Americans and four WNBA draftees. He signed Top 10 recruiting classes four times, including the nation s No. 1 group in 2006, and seven of his signees were McDonald s All- Americans. Overall, he was 90-64 at USC, but resigned after the 2009 season for personal reasons. After nearly two years off from coaching following his resignation from USC (he was associate head coach briefly at San Diego State #0 SHALEXXUS AARON (G RS FR) Apple Valley, Calif. In each of the last three seasons, his Aggies posted 20-plus victories while winning the Western Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships, and he was named the league s Coach of the Year each season. His 2017 Aggie squad was 24-7 overall, including a perfect 14-0 WAC mark (NMSU s first perfect conference record), had a school record 17-game winning streak and it lost by just eight points in the NCAA first round to eventual NCAA finalist Stanford. That came on the heels of 2016 s 26-5 team which tied the program record for season victories and consecutive wins (15). That year, he became just the fifth coach in NCAA history to lead three different schools to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. His 2015 team, which was 22-8 overall, advanced to NCAA play for the first time in 27 years, posted the school s first winning record in WAC play (13-1) in seven years and won the program s first-ever WAC regular season and tournament titles. In 11 years (1994-2004) at Pepperdine, Trakh went 199-123, won four West Coast Conference crowns and two WCC tournament titles, captured at least 20 wins six times, and made the post-season in each of his last six seasons (three NCAAs and three WNITs). He was the 1999 and 2002 WCC Coach of the Year. He coached two WCC Players of the Year and produced Pepperdine s first WNBA pick. His Wave teams had a 100% graduation rate during his time there. Before entering the collegiate ranks, Trakh coached Brea (Calif.) Olinda High for 13 seasons (1981-93), compiling a 354-45 (.887) record while winning four California state championships and six CIF Southern Section titles. He also taught English at Brea Olinda. He is a member of the City of Brea Hall of Fame and the Southern California High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. In 1980, he was the boys sophomore team coach at Western High in Anaheim (Calif.). Trakh played basketball and baseball at Lakeland Regional High in Wanaque, N.J. He then attended Fairleigh Dickinson and Fullerton College, where as a journalism major he was the sports editor of the student newspaper, before graduating from Long Beach State in 1981 with a degree in journalism (he also has his teaching credential). Trakh was born on May 31, 1955, in Amman, Jordan. He moved to the United States at age four, living first in Connecticut and New Jersey before coming to California for college. His younger brother, Maz, is an assistant coach with the NBA s Washington Wizards and previously was an assistant with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Detroit Pistons and a scout with the Golden State Warriors. He also coached in the ABA, CBA, collegiately and overseas. Page 5
