Pinxton remembers its Fallen of World War One The First World War was unlike any previous war. The regular soldiers of the British Army, nicknamed The Old Contemptibles, took pride in their bold professional skills and were prepared to fight and die because it was what they were there to do. Kitchener s Army initially consisted of volunteers and were a proud band of inexperienced but enthusiastic, dedicated soldiers. They were also prepared to fight and possibly die as they saw it as their duty to do so. In 1914 thousands at home and from the British Empire flocked to join the Colours. Some of Pinxton s men had already enlisted in the regular army and navy, many more joined Kitchener s volunteers. They fought in every theatre of war: Mons, The Marne, Aisne, Ypres, Neuve-Chapelle, Loos, Somme, Gallipoli, Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele the list goes on. Pinxton should be very proud of all its sons who made the ultimate sacrifice. The following pages are dedicated to their memory
