Scouts and Scouters: Camp Pellissippi Canoe/Kayaking Weekend September 18 th 20 th, 2015 This is a participant recruiting letter for a canoeing/kayaking weekend at Camp Pellissippi on the weekend of September 18 20, 2015. The following will be offered at Camp Pellissippi: Canoeing MB, Kayaking MB, Kayaking BSA, and Whitewater MB. Participants will also have the opportunity to canoe/kayak the Clinch River from the weir dam below Norris Dam to the Highway 61 Bridge either late Saturday afternoon or late Sunday morning. Pellissippi: Canoeing, Kayaking, and Whitewater MB's along with Kayaking BSA Friday Night 7:00 to 9:00 requirements that can be done on land 9:30 campfire 11:00 lights out Saturday 7:30 breakfast 8:00 check-in for participants 8:30 swim tests arriving Saturday morning 9:00 to 12:00 merit badges 12:00 to 1:00 lunch 1:00 to 4:00 merit badges 5:30 to 8:00 canoe the Clinch River 6:00 to 7:30 Dinner 9:30 campfire 11:00 lights out Sunday 7:30 breakfast 8:00 to 8:30 Chapel 8:30 to 10:00 finish merit badges if needed 10:30 travel to Norris Dam 11:00 to 2:00 canoe/kayak to Highway 61 bridge lunch on the water 2:00 to 2:30 pick up at the Highway 61 bridge Pellissippi personal gear
We have access to the Adirondacks, Cabin 14, and the Shower house but please bring a tent in case needed. gear and cloths to camp 2 nights raingear water gear swimming trunks, towel, sunscreen, and water bottle some type of footwear for the water, must be closed toed PFD if you have one Food is provided if chosen Pellissippi Notes Weekend cost is $25 per participant if food is included, $10 otherwise Participants may arrive on Saturday morning if necessary Participants are encouraged to register as part of a Troop or Crew (Coed) Troop/Crew must provide 2-deep leadership All adults going on the water must complete Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat. Can be completed online Adults and scouts will be asked to help with various aspects of the weekend, such as cooking and cleaning Individuals may register and participate. Individuals will be transported to Norris Dam either on Saturday or Sunday. Medical Form A/B is required and must be turned in at check-in All participants must pass a swim test on Saturday morning Pick up will be at the Highway 61 Bridge, where it intersects the Clinch River in East Clinton. Pick up will be either at 8:00pm on Saturday evening or at 2:30 to 3:00 on Sunday afternoon. Participants not going down the Clinch River may be picked up around 10:30 at Pellissippi. *****Kayakers The Clinch River is class 1 moving water. Participants must either use an open top kayak or demonstrate proficiency with a closed kayak in order to use a kayak on the Clinch River. Participants who do not demonstrate enough proficiency to use a kayak will use a canoe instead. Pellissippi Food Friday night marshmallows for campfire. Bring your own chocolate and graham crackers if desired Saturday/Sunday breakfast milk, orange juice, cereal, oatmeal, apples, and bananas Saturday/Sunday lunch Sandwiches, peanut butter and jelly along with ham and chicken, condiments, cookies, nuts, and fruit Saturday dinner spaghetti, green beans, salad, bread and butter We have plenty of ice and water bring personal drinks as desired Pellissippi Merit Badges General please bring PFD and/or paddle if you have one please let me know if you have your own kayak or canoe
Please purchase merit badge pamphlets and be prepared for the requirements that can be completed on land. The more time required for the land requirements will shorten the time available to do the water requirements participants need to be strong swimmers please be aware that the requirements for these merit badges may be difficult for some participants to master in one weekend and all requirements may not be met 35 canoes are available for Canoeing and Whitewater merit badges 70 participants is the limit. Any participant that passes the Canoeing merit badge may work on the Whitewater merit badge Only 13 kayaks are available for Kayaking merit badge, Kayaking BSA, and Whitewater merit badge.
