The Kangaroos could not overcome three Cyclone players scoring in doubledigits to drop the first regular season game in the 2008-09 season. Morris led with 13 points, while Kalei Nance added eight and Brianna Eldridge finished with seven in her first collegiate start. 12 players saw action in today s regular season opener with Iowa State, with all nine newcomers seeing significant time on the floor. The Kangaroos fall to 0-1 on the year while Iowa State begins their regular season at 1-0. Eye Opening Experience Heather Davis and Brianna Eldridge recorded their first collegiate starts on Sunday afternoon against Iowa State. The freshman and the other newbie s, all of whom saw some court time, got to really see what college women s basketball is about, playing in Hilton Coliseum. The Kangaroos battled hard in front of 10,103 screaming Cyclone fans. The seven freshmen combined for 18 points and totaled 125 minutes out on the court (17.85 avg.). Eldridge led this freshmen class with seven points and 22 minutes. Similar Make-Up The big buzz behind the 2008-09 Kangaroos is their large numbers of newcomers. UMKC has nine newcomers, with seven-of-thosenine being freshman. While some may have their doubts about the capabilities of how far these young `Roos can go, that doesn t seem to faze coach Whitaker s crew. Similar things can be said about SIU Edwardsville. The Cougars have three players who were members of the 2007-08 squad (compared to UMKC s four). SIU Edwardsville tallies seven new players to this year s squad, broken down into four transfers and three freshmen. Women s Basketball Inks Kim Nezianya And Sophia Rhodes On Signing Day UMKC head women s basketball coach Candace Whitaker announced today the signing of two student-athletes who plan to continue their education and basketball careers with the UMKC women s basketball program next season. The Kangaroos received National Letters of Intent from Kim Nezianya out of Newman Smith High School in Carrollton, Texas, and Sophia Rhodes from Broomfield High School in Northglenn, Colo. Nezianya, a 6-0 forward, is rated as the No. 69 player in the state of Texas by the Premier Basketball Report. During her junior season, Nezianya averaged 9.5 points and 7.3 rebounds, which led to her earning honorable mention all-district honors. The forward was named the NSHS Offensive Player of the Year after leading the team and ranking in the top-25 in Class 5A in rebounds. The forward also ranked among the top-10 in the district in scoring. As a sophomore, Nezianya also earned post season honors, as she was a second team all-district honoree. Rhodes, a 6-0 forward, guided Broomfield High School to consecutive state championships, one of which was the first girl s basketball championship in school history. Rhodes has earned all-conference honors three straight years and is a three-year letterwinner, as she started on the varsity squad as a freshman. Last season, Rhodes averaged 5.9 points per game, while shooting.541 from the floor. The forward also shot 71.4 percent from the free throw line to go along with 35 assists and 28 steals. Rhodes was also named to the all-boulder Valley School district team as a sophomore, and she garnered honorable mention allstate honors. `Roos Rock Against Rockhurst Four players landed in double-digits to lead the UMKC women s basketball team to a 96-61 victory over Rockhurst University in an exhibition match on Saturday afternoon. The Kangaroos were led by junior guard Chazny Morris, who scored 26 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Heather Davis would finish the day with 18 total points scored, going 5-for-7 from the three-point line. Kalei Nance contributed 16 points and six rebounds while Kenya Howard sunk four field goals and a pair of free throws for 10 points. Big Ups to the Freshman Heather Davis came out blazing in her first contest in a Kangaroo uniform. Davis shot 5-for-7 from the three-point line and 2

Game Notes finished the exhibition contest with 18 total points. Fierce Freshmen Head Coach Candace Whitaker has a lot of newbie s in the lineup this season but that doesn t scare her or her seven freshman. Four freshmen saw action on the floor on Saturday afternoon against Rockhurst. Brianna Eldridge and LeAndrea Thomas earned the starting nod, while Kristin Aldridge and Heather Davis came ready to play right off the bench. The four freshman combined for 93 minutes (23.25 avg.) and 41 total points (10.25 avg.). Davis represented her freshman class well, scoring 18 points. Aldridge finished the day with nine points, while Eldridge and Thomas both scored seven. Eldridge also posted a game high (along with Chazny Morris) four steals. Big Time Numbers The game against Iowa State will be a real eye opener for the newcomers, as they ll get to experience what collegiate women s basketball is really about. In the 2007-08 season, Iowa State averaged over 9,000 fans at their home games. Hilton Coliseum, home of the Cyclones, can hold up to 14,000 spectators. At their exhibition match with Missouri Western, the Cyclones had 9,859 fans in attendance. For UMKC in the 2007-08 season, the Kangaroos had 4,244 fans (303 avg.) in attendance at Swinney Recreation Center. New Season, New Beginnings Head coach Candace Whitaker enters her third season with the UMKC women s basketball program and is looking to make a statement. Whitaker welcomes back all her staff from last season with a couple of new additions as well. The Kangaroos have four players returning from the 2007-08 squad and Whitaker will look to them for leadership, but it s the newcomers that pose the biggest questions for the Kangaroos. Of UMKC s 13-woman roster, nine of them are newcomers to the 2008-09 squad, broken down into two transfers and seven freshmen. But Whitaker is optimistic about this new group and believes they will play a big role in this new season. I expect great things from this recruiting class, as they have lots of potential and some will contribute in a big way to our success this season, said Whitaker. Already In the Record Books Junior Chazny Morris is just one-of-four veterans that will be called upon to lead the 2008-09 team. Morris was the leading scorer for UMKC in the 2007-08 season, averaging 17.6 points per game. She was just shy of a 500-point season, scoring 492 points overall. In just two seasons with the Kangaroos, Morris has already begun to leave her mark. Morris has secured spots on the single season top-10 records in six categories, leading in free throws made (118). Morris also ranks in the top-10 for career statistics. In her two year career, she is second in three-point field goal percentage (.440). Morris also ranks sixth in three point field goals made at 91. She ranks seventh in school history in scoring average (13.1), three point field goals attempted (258) and is eighth in free throw percentage (.758). 2007-08 Kangaroo Season UMKC wrapped up the 2007-08 season with an 11-20 overall record and went 3-15 in The Summit League. The no. seven seeded Kangaroos post season was highlighted by an upset over no. two seeded Western Illinois in The Summit League Championships, 62-55. UMKC lost out in the semi-final match to IUPUI, 54-42. The Kangaroos return four players from last year s squad and welcome nine newcomers. 3 `Roo Roster Breakdown Starters Returning (1): Chazny Morris (5-10, G, Jr., 17.6 ppg., 5.8 rpg) Lettermen Returning (3): Tarah Cullen (5-10, G, Jr., 1.8 ppg., 0.9 rpg.) At age 29, she is the third youngest behind Candace Whitaker, of UMKC, and Kendra Faustin, of Niagara. Levens, an All-American at Arizona State, has Illinois ties.» Along with Levens, there are three additional new faces on the coaching staff. Kevin Chaney comes to SIUE from Minnesota-Duluth where he served as an assistant coach. Laura Gonsalves was an All-American, played professionally and most recently coached as an assistant at Alaska-Fairbanks. Rebecca Little is the team s graduate assistant coach. She was recruited by Nevada but never played a game after learning she had developed a genetic heart condition called Ventricular Tachycardia.» Only three players on the 2008-09 roster have played previously for the Cougars. Game Notes» UMKC Coaching Staff Candace Whitaker Head Coach Third Season Candace Whitaker was named the head coach of the UMKC women s basketball program on Mar. 19, 2007. Whitaker, who is the seventh head coach in the Division I era at UMKC, enters into her third season at the helm of the Kangaroos. She had previously been an assistant coach for two years before serving as the interim head coach during the 2006-07 season. During the 2007-08 season, Whitaker led her squad to an 11-20 overall record, highlighted by a semifinal appearance at The Summit League Championship. With the Kangaroos 3-15 finish in conference play, UMKC entered the Championship as the No. 7 seed, where it would square off against No. 2 seed Western Illinois. Whitaker led her team to the 62-55 upset of the Westerwinds, a feat they couldn t accomplish in two games during the regular season, to advance. The Kangaroos couldn t keep their momentum, however, as they suffered a close 54-42 semifinal loss to IUPUI. Whitaker had a plethora of athletes earn honors for both their work on the floor and in the class room. Alysa Klein was named to The Summit League Championship all-tournament team and earned second team all-league honors along with teammate Chazny Morris. Morris was also recognized as The Summit League Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 4, 2007. Whitaker had three players named to The Summit League s Commissioner s List of Academic Excellence and had eight student-athletes land on the Winter/Spring Academic all-league team. Whitaker took over on the sidelines for Bo Overton on Dec. 11, 2006 and compiled an 8-11 record for the Kangaroos, while being one of the youngest head coaches in the nation at 26. In Mid-Con play, she guided her squad to a 6-8 overall record and a tie for fifth place in the Mid-Con regular season standings. A trio of players earned all-league honors under Whitaker s tutelage. Klein was selected as a first team all-conference selection, while Stephanie Brown was an honorable mention all-league honoree. Morris, meanwhile, was selected to the all-newcomer squad and she was named the Mid-Con Newcomer of the Year. From 2004-06, Whitaker served as an assistant coach for the Kangaroos under Overton. During the 2005-06 campaign, UMKC improved three games in the Mid-Con regular season race, as they finished with an even 8-8 mark. In the regular season finale, UMKC became one of two league teams to post a win at Western Illinois, a venue where the Westerwinds had previously won 46-consecutive games. Whitaker guided Brown to first team all-conference and all-newcomer honors, as well as to the Newcomer of the Year accolade. Brown was the first UMKC player to be awarded the accomplishment. In her inaugural year in Kansas City, Whitaker helped guide the Kangaroos to the championship game of the 2005 Mid-Continent Tournament., UMKC finished 10-20 overall and 5-11 in the league. Under her guidance, three players earned all-conference honors. Katie Houlehan was a first team all-league selection, while Klein was named to the all-newcomer team. Houlehan, Klein and Sammi Knapic were all selected to the 2005 Mid-Con all-tournament team. Prior to her appointment at UMKC, Whitaker spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Valparaiso. While at VALPO, she helped the team to two straight Mid-Continent Conference Tournament championships, two NCAA Tournament berths and two 20-win seasons. The NCAA appearances were the first in the history of the school. Whitaker arrived at Valparaiso after playing at Texas Tech for two seasons (2000-02). She led the team to a pair of Sweet Sixteen appearances as the Lady Raiders starting point guard under legendary coach Marsha Sharp. Prior to her two seasons at Texas Tech, she played two years at Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kan., where her team was ranked number one in the nation in 1999-2000 after finishing fifth nationally the season before. Whitaker was named an honorable mention National Junior College Athletic Association all-american after she averaged a double-double in assists and points. She also led the nation in assists under Head Coach Jim Littell in 99-00. Whitaker was also a member of the NJCAA National Team that played in Europe. A prolific playmaker, Whitaker finished her career with more than 830 assists in four years of collegiate basketball. A native of Canyon, Texas, Whitaker received a bachelor of science degree in exercise sport science from Texas Tech in 2002. She also earned a master s degree in sports administration at Valparaiso in 2004, where she received the Athenaeum award for academics. She was married to Matt Whitaker on April 28, 2007. 6 2008-09 coaching staff Brett Schneider Associate Head Coach Second Season Wyketha Harrell Assistant Coach Second Season Leslie Howard Student Manager First Season Whitney Law Assistant Coach Third Season Jessica Trahan Director of Basketball Operations Myleka Emerson Student Assistant FirstSeason
