CHORUS NEWS Congratulations to the Freedom Middle School Chorus. We are so proud of our Singing Stars! Congratulations! The following students participated in the National History Bee Nashville Regionals at Freedom Middle School on March 3 rd : Zion Brown (8th), Skyler Duplessis (7th), Gabriel Garcia (7th), Brewer Osteen (7th), and Caleb Workman (7th). All students qualified for the national competition in Atlanta in June. They did a great job representing FMS. We are so proud of them. Way to go Stars! 8 th Grade Guidance: With high school registrations finished, we have shifted our focus from preparing for the academic part of high school to the social/personal aspects. In particular, we discussed understanding the consequences of choices and effects of negative peer pressure. To start, Mr. Brad Coutts, Williamson County Health Department, will be coming to present information regarding Substance Abuse. I will then follow up with discussions about how to handle social pressures and make good choices, which requires good self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-awareness. The struggle of adolescence is figuring out who am I and selfawareness, which will lead to self-acceptance. Becoming involved (clubs, sports, organizations, etc.) is essential in this process and creates a sense of connectedness which is another defense to negative peer pressure. As I have stressed with the students, the key to high school success is a balance between academics and activities! 7 th Grade Guidance: We continue our discussion of the habits of Highly Effective Teens (adapted from Sean Covey). Students have reflected on what they anticipate their life will be like 5, 10, and 15 years from now. They then ponder how to make that happen. For example, what do they need to do today to get there? This reflection involves prioritizing so ask your child about their big rocks and small rocks. We will be incorporating a discussion of TCAP and how to best prepare in order to do their best. All of these topics will lead into some career exploration, including a Careers for Me interest inventory, since in 8 th grade they will attend the Williamson County Career Fair. As always, don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns for your child... we need them her everyday ready to learn. Please have your rides at school by 3:45 to pick you up. See Mr. Stevens with any ques(ons. Mee(ng dates: April 9 & 23 May 4 & 14 What are allergies? Allergies occur when your immune system has an adverse reaction to certain substances. Upon exposure to triggers, the immune system releases chemicals called histamines. While intended to fight off perceived intruders, the release of histamine is actually what causes allergy symptoms. The following are the facts you need to know about allergies: Some of the symptoms are similar to colds, such as sneezing, sore throat, coughing, runny nose, and congestion. Sore throat in allergies is most often caused by postnasal drip. Allergies can also cause rashes and itchy eyes. Fevers and body aches are not signs of an allergy. PGS COMPETITION CHEERLEADING TRYOUTS Tryouts for the PGS Competition Cheerleading Team will be April 9th through April 13th. Any rising 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th grade girl at FIS, FMS or PGS may tryout. The 85 minute TNReady ELA Field Test will be administered to all FMS 8 th grade students on Friday, March 23 rd. The purpose of the field test is to provide valuable information to the department of education in order to inform future test development. Even though the field test is not officially scored and reported, the results are used to strengthen future operational tests by ensuring each question measures what our students should know and can do.
