For more information and to request and application form please contact Saburo Takashima at stakashima2002@yahoo.co.jp Hansei (Reflections) With Takeno Sensei & Nakagawa Sensei arriving next week I am excited that we here in Sydney will be hosting them. I first accompanied Takeno Sensei to the UK about 10 years ago. The host at that time was Paul Stephens, with whom I had done the Senshusei Course (1 year Instructor Course) and Eva Stauffer, also a past Senshusei. I later accompanied Takeno Sensei to Canada, Germany, Melbourne and Malaysia. The trip to Germany was particularly memorable for me as it reunited Paul Stephens, Stephan Otto (a fellow Senshusei Course graduate) and myself. We had all met at Yoshinkan Honbu in March 1992 having arrived to settle in for the Senshusei Course starting on April 1 st. Soon we were living together, training together and working together. It really was like being in a barracks within Tokyo with everything revolving around the dojo and training. We literally lived aikido and although the memories are sweet now it was often very hard. There were 14 people who started our course on April 1 st 1992, by the end of the first week half had quit, 4 made it through the year to graduate. Seventeen years later all of us are still training, still promoting Yoshinkan Aikido in our respective areas.

Persistence and perseverance are two key words that any Senshusei graduate knows well. It is easy enough to sign up for something that on paper seems quite glamorous. It is something else when it is just your will pushing through pain, stress and physical exhaustion. Within that one-year Senshusei course, training alongside the Tokyo Metropolitan Riot Police, I learnt a lot about Yoshinkan Aikido. It also taught me much about perseverance leading to success, how a strong will to succeed can overcome even the most daunting obstacles. Looking back at the last 4 years since we arrived back in Australia in April 2005, I can see clearly that the spirit of Yoshinkan Aikido that was drilled into us is alive and well here in Sydney. I see students taking on responsibility for both the seminar and demonstration. Students have re-arranged work schedules, taken time off work and put themselves as fully into the preparation for this as they could. I am both pleased and grateful. That level of commitment furthers my resolve to do more to train and promote Yoshinkan Aikido in Sydney. I know everyone will enjoy this unique opportunity to feel Takeno Sensei s technique and be inspired by his lifetime commitment to aikido.
