Why Lisbon is the best romantic destination in Europe? Lisbon romantic destination When you think about the perfect gateways for lovers in Europe, the first places that come to your mind are Paris, Verona or Venice. Of course, these cities are amazing but they are definitely too crowded and overrated. How many times can you visit the Eiffel tower or Juliet s house? If you are looking for something different, unique and still undiscovered, this post is for you. Lisbon romantic destination is perfect for the lovers of all ages. Visiting Portugal s capital will make you fall in love with this city and (hopefully) deepen the relationship with your partner. Here s why: #1 Amazing historical centre The centre of Lisbon is stunningly beautiful. Strolling around the narrow and steep streets is a great idea for the perfect date. The colourful buildings and amazing monuments makes Lisbon one of the most picturesque cities in Europe. If you are interested in the history, it s worth to read more about the capital of Portugal. In 1755 it was almost completely destroyed by the earthquake and tsunami. When it was being rebuilt afterwards, the leader of the project was asked why he wants the streets to be so wide. He answered: one day, they will be narrow.
#2 Eternal summer Did you know that there is never cold in Lisbon? The city is located at the coast, so the negative temperatures are very unlikely to occur there. Even in the coldest months like December or January, it s sunny in the capital of Portugal. All of the photos that you can see in this post are taken in the winter. Some days were warm enough to wear only the t-shirts, without any jackets. What can be more romantic than spending time with someone you love in the place like this? Lisbon is the city of never-ending summer that s what makes it beautiful.
#3 Unique atmosphere There is something magical about Lisbon The atmosphere of this city is amazing. When the sun is shining and you hear the sound of the ocean, you really can feel the love in the air. You can either walk around or take a bus tour to get to know more about the Portugal and its capital. The company that we can recommend is the Caravel on Wheels. They are different than all the popular hop on hop off buses. They are offering an interactive tour with the history insights. You are not leaving the vehicle for almost two hours- you have a display in front of you and earphones to hear all the important informations. We absolutely loved it- we could hold our hands the entire time, take photos and learn a lot about Lisbon.
#4 Delicious food Hands down, food is one of the important parts of traveling. We all love trying local specialties. Portuguese cuisine is really awesome, so it won t be disappointing even for the most demanding tourists. Because of the direct access to the ocean, Portugal is famous from its seafood. Add to it the olives, cheese and fresh bread, and you will have a perfect meal. If you have a sweet tooth, you will love Portuguese desserts. The most famous is Pastel de nata, a custard tart. Even though you can buy it almost everywhere in the country, the most famous (and arguably the best) are being sold in Pastéis de Belém pastry shop in Lisbon. #5 Fun things to do There is always a lot going on in Lisbon! The absolute best thing to do in this city is to take a ride by an old, yellow tram (number #28 or #12). It s going around the historic centre and it s pretty impressive how easily it goes through the narrow and steep streets.
The yellow tram became a symbol of Lisbon- you can see it on almost every postcard from the city. #6 Awesome location Lisbon is located at the Atlantic Ocean. It s one of the few European capitals that have direct access to the open water. That makes it pretty unique and of course romantic! Looking at the ocean with someone you love and listening to sound of waves is a great idea for the perfect date. The other awesome thing about Lisbon is that it s situated in the south of Portugal. It s one of the warmest parts of the country.
#7 Affordable prices Lisbon is NOT an expensive city. Eating a meal in a good restaurant won t cost you more than 10 euro. All the tourist attractions are affordable and the hotels are inexpensive. Speaking of the accommodation- we have been staying at Hotel Lisboa Plaza that belongs to the Heritage Hotels group. They are the best places to stay in Lisbon: located in heart of the city, with beautiful rooms, luxurious interiors and amazing staff, they will satisfy even the most demanding travellers. Check out the latest prices for Hotel Lisboa Plaza > click here.
#8 Friendly people Portuguese people are really friendly. Every time we asked for the help, they were willing to do everything for us. Even when they didn t know the answer to our question, they were smiling and tried to find a solution for our problem. That s another reason why Lisbon is a great romantic destination- you can spend a great time with your partner and be sure that the people around you are nice and trustworthy.
#9 Lovely scenery The historical centre, colourful buildings and Atlantic Ocean makes Lisbon simply unforgettable. Once you go there, there is no turning back- you will love this city forever.
#10 Interesting surroundings There are many awesome places to visit around Lisbon. The most famous (and unfortunately, the most crowded one) is Sintra. It s a beautiful town listed as UNESCO world heritage site. The other place, that is less known to the tourist is Cabo da Roca. It s the westernmost point of the continental Europe. You can see it on the photo belowdoesn t it look heartbreakingly beautiful?
