Hill Archival Technical Services Accession Number: 89-098 Date Completed: June 8, 1989 Location: VII-D-5

INTRODUCTION The Carl Hickok West (1924-1954) Papers, 1922-1974, are centered on correspondence written by Carl West while a sailor in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Correspondence in the collection is mainly between family members, and due to Naval censorship, there is no detailed description of actions by the U.S. Fleet. The papers were a gift of Mr. Jack A. West of Nashville, Tennessee. The materials in this collection measure.84 cubic feet. There are no restrictions on the materials. Single photocopies of unpublished writings in the Carl Hickok West Papers may be made for purposes of scholarly research.

SCOPE AND CONTENT The Carl Hickok West Papers, containing approximately 200 items, consists primarily of letters by West, written home from boot camp, Naval Radar School, and from on board the USS Cetus during World War II. The bulk of the letters fall between the years 1942-1945, however, a number of the letters deal with the post-war years, Carl s marriage, and life in California after the war. Carl West died in an auto accident in 1954, and several letters pertaining to his tragic death are included in the collection. In addition to the actual papers of Carl West, there are also photographs, cards, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia.
