Transcription:

You re never too old to learn something new, and it s never too late to get started. It is fascinating how much Roselynn and Taylor have changed in just over a year, yet everyone else in the family photo is just grateful to not look all that much older. These two great grandkids are so much FUN! They love learning every day, and they really LOVE cows. You can see their eyes light up when somebody mentions that they are going to the ranch, and they are checking cows the minute they arrive! They re a little young for NJAA but our youth development program is actively underway. David McMahon, Sr. was well-known as a businessman, a stockman, a thinker, a leader. He was also a very good teacher, because he was an avid lifelong learner. He read voraciously newspapers of all kinds, business magazines, livestock publications, sale catalogs, every promotional brochure that landed on his desk. He would clip information that was of interest to him and share it with others. When he learned to use the fax machine his teaching influence expanded significantly. Dave got the fax. Computer? Internet? Not so much. It s not that he didn t appreciate the digital exchange of information. He thought it was amazing, for other people. It s just that he never had a real need to use digital technology for accessing new information because he already had plenty of reliable sources! Our Angus neighbor in Poteau, Oklahoma, Danny Wann, tells a story about one of Dave s most meaningful teachings, that Danny quotes to others frequently. Danny recalls hearing Dave emphatically declare many times, You have to TAKE OWNERSHIP in your cattle. People enjoy picking them out, bidding on them, taking them home, looking at them, talking about them. But OWNING cattle means learning to do everything that s required to take care of them and doing it, every day! Back in the early 90s, a post-sale conversation took place between a brand new big spender and an equally-able spender with much more experience. The new guy had dropped some serious cash that day, and may very well have been feeling just a bit of buyer s remorse. But you wouldn t know it by his bravado. We ll have this cattle business all figured out in a couple of years, he announced. To which the seasoned breeder boomed, If you think you re gonna figure out this business in a few years you should sell that cow you just bought and get out now! Everyone within earshot chuckled and listened as he continued, expounding on why he is an Angus breeder: he truly enjoys studying about every aspect from pedigrees, to performance, to pasture management, constant change makes it the most challenging business he s ever been in, and (the big finish) it is a lifelong endeavor that he may never actually conquer. It was an inspiring speech! A lifelong endeavor requires lifelong learning. Reading, observing, asking questions, unlearning old beliefs, trying new methods, trying again. To succeed in the Angus business you need big picture vision and an eye for detail, an open mind and a listening ear, quiet time to watch cattle and think about what you see, trust for the tried-and-true, enthusiasm for the new-and-improved, and willingness to shift gears and adapt. When decisions, projects or purchases don t turn out exactly as planned round here we refer to the experience as tuition. Pay the price, look for the lesson and keep moving forward. Take ownership in your lifelong endeavor. Like Roselynn and Taylor, we LOVE learning about and taking care of our Angus cattle. Don t you? We appreciate your time, travel and effort to be with us this year, in person, on the phone or internet, or in spirit. We will always respect your trust in us, it is the foundation of our business. We want to succeed in the Angus business, and we want you to come along with us on the path. We invite you to be here on March 22 and 23 to learn new things and meet new people as Dave would say All because of the Angus cow! We hope you will join us!

Ron McDaniel and his wife Nancy live in Northwest Arkansas. They have three kids and four grandkids, and were foster parents of teenagers for five years. They also have horses, dogs, and just enough cattle to be in constant debt to the bank. Alongside his animal health career, Ron dayworks for area ranches. As a testament to his cowboying skills, the cow boss at Adams Cattle Co. stated, Hiring Ron was like losing two good men. Reciting poetry has taken him all over America, from Florida to Alaska. Competing in the National Cowboy Poetry Rodeo (NCPR), he s won the Humorous-Rising Star division, Humorous-Silver Buckle division and Reciter Serious-Silver Buckle division. He enjoys anything that keeps him horseback, being with his family, and writing about himself in 3rd person. Dr. Brenda Grettenberger grew up on a small family dairy farm in Eaton Rapids, Michigan. Her enjoyment working with cattle naturally led to participation in the local 4-H program. A project heifer with a broken leg opened the door for her to visit Michigan State University s veterinary clinic, and launched her dream of becoming a veterinarian. She earned her B.S. and D.V.M. degrees at Michigan State. Dr. Brenda is Senior Associate of Pol Veterinary Services, a general practice serving livestock, horses and companion animals (and their people) in a large geographic area of central Michigan. She believes sharing the ins and outs of her profession s unique challenges on a popular reality TV program is an opportunity to help viewers better understand and appreciate animal health care. Dr. Jason Rowntree is an associate professor in the Department of Animal Science at Michigan State University. He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State, his Masters degree from Mississippi State, and his B.S. degree from Texas A&M. Jason was working at Louisiana State University in 2005 when two massive hurricanes devastated Louisiana agriculture. Helping farmers recover from the twin disasters, Jason realized his life s work would be developing systems to increase the resilience of food production worldwide. Jason coordinates two MSU AgBioResearch Centers that address economic, environmental and social complexity in agriculture. He has obtained more than $2 million in funding to study how grazing livestock can improve land and mitigate climate change by capturing carbon and providing other ecosystem services. Dave Robertson is the Director of the Family Enterprise Center at UAFS (University of Arkansas at Fort Smith). The Family Enterprise Center is a business outreach program of UAFS serving and supporting multi-generational family businesses in the region. FEC provides educational programs and consulting on family business succession planning and improving communication. Dave is an accountant by trade and has worked with several family businesses during his career. He has led the Family Business Center for the last ten years and has developed a strong understanding of the challenges of family business and an even greater level of empathy for the family business participants. 2

What s Networking got to do with cows? Why is networking important? How can I network more effectively? Do I need business cards? That s a GREAT QUESTION for Dana Wright-Wasson Networking is an active way to introduce yourself to people you don t know that you might not meet otherwise. It s important at cattle sales, because there is a common reason everyone is here, and there are all sorts of people who have stories to tell, and ideas or knowledge to share. Networking is a structure to do that. In fact, meeting new people is one of the big reasons people attend an event like this! Before meeting people, you need to spend a little time coming up with your own 7-word introduction. This goes beyond your business title, it s more about the VALUE you bring to the world. Mine would be: My name is Dana. I facilitate groups to have conversations that matter. Yours can go something like: My name is Larry. I work with Angus breeders to create revenue. (Oops! That s 8 words. Gettin kinda long-winded, Larry.) What else can I do ahead of time to prepare? It may seem strange, but preparation is key. Spend some more time thinking about the event, and who might be there that you want to meet and visit with. Why do you come to this event? What do you hope to get out of it? Yes, be sure to always have business cards with you. I learned a great strategy for collecting cards; it helps to have pockets. When you talk to someone, ask to exchange cards even if you have a short conversation. If you really connected and think you may want to contact them later, put their card in your right pocket. If not, put it in your left pocket. At the end of the day, you won t be left with a bunch of cards trying to remember the people you connected with and those you didn t! Take a minute to make a note on the back of the cards, recalling the connections you made. I like talking to my cows, but what if I m nervous talking to people I don t know? Every friend you have was once a stranger, and talking to people gets more comfortable with practice. Don t let fear stop you it s only uncomfortable the first 5 times you approach someone new. Push yourself to talk to 5 people at the sale that you don t know. Be curious! Everyone has an interesting story to tell. Thanks to Dana Wright-Wasson for her expert advice in planning our program and networking event! Dana Wright-Wasson is the founder of Take Action Inc., a global management consulting company that applies visual thinking to strategic planning, employee engagement, and leadership. ARE YOU WILLING TO SUCCEED in the Angus business? The single most important consideration for your breeding program should be how much thought, time, effort and money you put into TAKING CARE OF YOUR COWS! It s not easy or cheap to do the right things, but the RESULT is always worth the extra work and $$$. There are plenty of techy, trendy factors that will influence your success with Angus cattle. It s interesting and challenging to read, and think, and talk about all of it. And it s fun! When you make it a PRIORITY to provide: adequate feed (grain & hay), fresh, clean water, access to shade, freedom from flies, and a constant, watchful eye YOU WILL SUCCEED in the Angus world! We can t think of any INVESTMENT that has paid off as well as Angus cattle! We embrace performance data, genetic evaluation and genomic technology. But, first and foremost, we believe that cows and bulls have to be able do their most basic jobs. That s why we never underestimate the importance of FUNCTIONAL traits you can SEE. For many years we have quoted our wise friend, the veteran AAA Regional Manager Waymon Ashley. Waymon quipped then, and it couldn t be more true today: Give me an EPD for shoulders, and then let s start talkin about calving ease! You ve still gotta go LOOK at em to evaluate the essential traits that impact functional efficiency. The footnotes in this catalog are limited to reporting the calf at side and breeding information. We decided a long time ago to keep the mumbo-jumbo to a minimum to encourage the use of IMAGINATION! Consider names and numbers, and rankings. Read and listen to the opinions of the experts. Think...a lot. Listen to your own experience and set your priorities. Visualize what good looks like and define what SUCCESS means to you. There are a lot of changes going on round here, but one thing will always stay the same: we re here to help YOU be successful in the Angus breed. We look forward to sharing and gaining knowledge in good conversations with folks who come to Belle Point as customers...and leave as friends! 5

We put these HIGH VALUE Herd Sires on our payroll assigned with a specific job: delivering $$$. For many years Belle Point Ranch has made a significant financial investment in herd sires bred by the leading Angus operations in the country the best brand names. We will continue to acquire, prove and promote our own herd sires, and their herds of origin. Our herd sires are not considered by us to be clean-up bulls. Their role is essential in our practical management system, and they are very effective producing calf crops that make money. Belle Point s herd sires are featured on pages 6, 7 and 8. You can see them and their progeny here on the ranch March 23. Powerful and attractive. Excellent semen quality. Welcome Angus Friends! We welcome everyone to the Belle Point Ranch Sale on March 23, 2019 at the ranch at Michigan Office 517-546-6374 Lavaca, Arkansas. It will be an exciting opportunity to participate in the progressive, innovative Belle Point Ranch breeding program. David McMahon was a visionary, believed in hard work, always took pride in developing a program and certainly enjoyed helping others. The McMahon family continues to work together and, as you review the sale book, it is clear that the cattle in this year s sale will work well for Belle Point s many customers in the local area and region, as well as in programs throughout the country. Angus breeders need to be innovative and aggressive in their breeding decisions and marketing plans. From the foundation base established by David and Mary Ann, great IMPROVEMENT has taken place at the ranch with updated cattle facilities, pasture enhancement and, most importantly, Angus cattle that meet the needs of today s progressive breeder. An informative and entertaining program on Friday evening and networking time on Saturday morning are being established this year to share the development and progress that s happening here. The McMahon family is staging a unique opportunity for everyone, no matter how experienced, to learn new things and meet new people. The trend toward brand identification and adapting a business approach in marketing highlights Belle Point from most other producers. The genetics represented in this year s offering incorporate many of the breed s most proven and predictable sires. The herd bull battery outlined offers cow family lines from such major Angus breeders as 44 Farms, SydGen, and others. The 2019 Belle Point Ranch sale offering is unique, diverse and select. Headlining the offering is Lot 14, Vintage Blackcap 5025, a low birth, high $B AAR Ten X 7008 daughter. She sells with a bull calf at side by Baldridge Colonel, two ET daughters by Weigh Up (study the genomic profile of these ET heifer calves!), and an exclusive IVF embryo package by Poss Maverick. As Belle Point Ranch continues rebuilding a strong genetic base, notice the UNIQUE offering of SELL ONE/KEEP ONE lots. You will have the opportunity to share the best from the herd by selecting one of a pair of females, and Belle Point will retain the other as a key herd building female. We re excited about the upcoming Belle Point Sale and all at Cotton & Associates are pleased to be part of the Belle Point Ranch program. We invite you to come and enjoy this fun-loving family s unique brand of hospitality, and take advantage of their always strong offering of good cattle and good deals. We look forward to seeing you at the sale and if we can be of service in any way, please feel free to give us a call. You can finally trust the speed and precision of buying online in a conventional auction format. Connect online or download the CCi.live app on your phone, tablet or desktop computer. The platform is responsive and works just as well on any device, provided you have good internet service. You can always view an auction without signing in. You must only sign in if you plan to bid on cattle. Getting signed up is easy. STEP 1 - CREATE AN ACCOUNT and REQUEST BIDDING CREDENTIALS If you plan to bid on livestock, you must create a new account and request bidding credentials from CCi.live. Once you are approved the first time, you will not need to go through this process again for each sale. When you create an account, use a valid e-mail address. If in the future, if you forget your bidder password, you can reset it immediately through the e-mail on your account. Request approval for bidding credentials at least 2-4 hours prior to sale time, if not earlier. Please DO NOT WAIT until sale time to request bidding credentials, as you may not be approved quickly. STEP 2 - GET A BUYER NUMBER Once you are an approved bidder at CCi, simply go to the SALE SCHEDULE PAGE and click on the auction name that you are interested in. Then click BID ONLINE and click GET BUYER NUMBER. You will instantly be assigned a buyer number for that auction. The asking bid you SEE on the SCREEN is real time. If you have a slow internet connection, the auctioneer s voice that you hear online may actually be 1-2 seconds behind the screen price you see. The screen price is the asking bid at the auction and there is no delay, so you can bid with confidence by turning off the audio and only WATCHING the asking bid on the screen. If you feel that your internet connection is not an acceptable speed to bid online, you can watch the auction and phone in to the sale to place your bids. 10

Driving the science of better breeding There s little room for error in the cattle business. Producers need the most advanced information to make smart selection decisions, and Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) provides it through genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs). EPDs that traditionally contained all pedigree, performance and progeny information now also include results from available genomic, or DNA, tests. Breeders who use genomic technology give buyers access to AGI-generated GE-EPDs that provide: Increased predictability and decreased risk for young and unproven animals due to enhanced accuracy of EPDs Better characterization of genetics for difficult-to-measure performance traits (such as carcass traits, maternal traits and feed efficiency) The ability to make more rapid progress for traits that are important to you, due to: more accurate selection easier identification of genetic outliers the ability to propagate young animals with confidence earlier in their lives In fact, GE-EPDs on unproven animals have the same amount of accuracy as if they had recorded 8-33 calves, depending on the trait. That s valuable insight, offered regularly through the breed s weekly national cattle evaluation at www.angus.org. How do you know if EPDs are 19genomic-enhanced? plus... genomicenhanced epds!

In the heyday of Fort Smith, a popular saying went, There is no law west of St. Louis and no God west of Fort Smith. Recognized as a Top Ten True Western Town by True West magazine, Fort Smith has played a significant role throughout our nation s history, especially during its frontier days. The city and its culture has provided inspiration to literature and the film classic True Grit, as well as many other movies. Judge Isaac C. Parker held court for the Federal Government in the Western District of Arkansas just before the turn of the century. Visitors can experience that history firsthand at the Fort Smith National Historic Site. When the National U.S. Marshals Museum opens in Fort Smith in the next few years it will highlight the 220-year history of the nation s oldest law enforcement agency on the very spot where much of the most dangerous Marshals Service history took place. Downtown Fort Smith is more than a little civilized today (but still lots of fun!) and we invite you to look around! You will enjoy excellent restaurants, friendly bars and lively music venues on Garrison Avenue. Plan time to tour the Fort Smith Museum of History and the National Historic District, as well as for antique and unique shopping on the avenue. If you like antiques and wonderful old cities be sure to also make time for a visit to nearby historic Van Buren. There s lots to see and do across the river! Fort Smith National Historic Site A sculpture by celebrated Western Artist Harold Holden pays tribute to the life and legacy of the feared African American U.S. Marshall, Bass Reeves. Fort Smith Museum of History The Unexpected has brought urban contemporary art to downtown. The project began in 2015 and has transformed downtown Fort Smith into a world-class destination for urban and contemporary public art. Connealy Black Granite Sire of Lot 50 Quaker Hill Rampage 0A36 Sire of Lot 51 33 Fast Pay Makes Fast Friends By Mark Vittert, published in 1981 First reprinted in the 1989 Belle Point catalog The stakes of the poker game were getting pretty high. There was more than $100 in the pot and unfortunately my cards were pretty good. I had to play the hand out. It was 3 a.m. and we d been at the table for seven hours. I kept meeting the raises, the pot kept growing and all I remember is that the Captain s cards beat mine flush over straight. That hand ended the game and we all settled up. Except me. I owed the Captain $400 and, never thinking of losing that much, I didn t have it with me. I told the Captain that I d send him a check. He said fine but he also added: Mark, just remember that fast pay makes fast friends. We ve all heard different versions of the old joke, the three biggest lies. The joke always begins with the first lie being, the check is in the mail. There is something special about someone who always follows through on what he promises. Not just that they actually do what they say but rather that they do it when they say they will and that it s done with class. How many people in business do you know that you confidently could count to follow through on time? The lawyer says the papers will be done on Wednesday. Your big customer says that headquarters wants your payment held up for just another week. The head of personnel says he ll call you on Tuesday about the new job. Well, we all know those who do just what they say are rare indeed. It s so rare, that whenever people do follow through on time I m really pleasantly surprised and appreciative. Even if the news is bad, I feel positive toward the caller if it was done on time. Stringing people out is a bad habit. Generally, people who reach the top have learned to follow through quickly. As Tom Curtis once told me: A congressman learns to make as few commitments as possible but when a promise is made, then you must follow through at all costs and promptly. The place most people fall down is in the category of money. I ve found that if you pay quickly, most other obligations will appear to be easily met. Fast pay will make you feel better. After you write the check you can forget about the debt. And fast pay also keeps the other person from spending those waiting days thinking about your faults. Also, you become the kind of person people want to work with again. I called the Captain on a Wednesday in February and asked if he would like to invest $100,000 to $150,000 in a project I was putting together. He said: Yeah, it sounds good. I ll put the check in the mail right now. Got to go now. Thanks. Two days later on Friday, I received this crumpled little note in the mail. Mark: Enclosed is check for $100 grand. I ll play you bumper pool for the other 50 grand. Good luck, Captain. I suppose this is an example of a man who practices what he believes in.

THE KING OF STEERS CAB Barn #6, created by Troy Freeman in 2018 Troy Freeman has, since childhood, loved art. It all started with drawings, and making his own books, and by the time he was in high school, school administrators asked him to paint mascots his school s and all of its rivals in the gym; once complete, calls from other schools, farmers and businesses requesting their own paintings started to come in. Large-scale painting brings a unique set of considerations, and is somewhat a niche endeavor. Over the years, Troy has collaborated and learned from paint experts across the country to get insight on working on different styles of canvas, such as metal, wood or glass. In painting barns for the Certified Angus Beef brand, Troy loved meeting the farming families and learning their unique stories and backgrounds while celebrating their common goals and values. THE KING OF BEERS David McMahon, Sr. was an Angus cattle breeder and beer distributor who had the idea to paint one of his silos to look like a Budweiser can. He hired Earl Harris to paint the giant replica of a can of the time period 1975-1976. According to the label, it holds 8,734,902 fluid ounces of brew, enough to fill eight swimming pools. This popular roadside attraction is located on Belle Point Ranch, at the southeast corner of Hwys. 22 and 96. Visit www.arkansas.com/attractions We are grateful to the folks at CAB for bringing Troy Freeman to Belle Point. He ll be back in March, 2019 to restore and re-create the world famous Budweiser Silo!
