Nordstrom Tennis Center/Seattle Tennis Club Matches No. 6-9 ITA NATIONAL INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS: The University of Georgia men s tennis team (4-1) will join the nation s elite teams when it competes for a national indoor title at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Feb. 15-18 in Seattle, Wash. The sixth-seeded Bulldogs will face off against the No. 12 seed and SEC counterpart Ole Miss in round of 16 action, with first serve scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m. ET at the Seattle Tennis Club. With a win, Georgia would meet the winner of No. 1 UCLA-No. 14 Tennessee in quarterfinal action on Saturday. The semifinals are scheduled for Sunday and the final Monday. Georgia punched its ticket to the 16-team field by winning two matches at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Athens Jan. 25-26, defeating Vanderbilt and VCU in the first and second rounds. The field is comprised of 15 other top teams - 14 of which won their regional matches as well as the University of Washington, which earned at automatic bid as event host. Live scoring will be available on Georgiadogs.com and the Georgia Tennis Live Chat will be rolling as long as the Bulldogs are in action. Teams are guaranteed at least three matches. GEORGIA AT THE ITA NATIONAL INDOOR: The Bulldogs have won the National Indoor twice (2006, 07) and have reached the finals six times (1982, 94, 95, 97, 98, 2009). The tournament began in 1973 and Georgia has advanced to it every year except 2003. In 2012 Georgia moved out of the Kickoff Weekend with wins over TCU and Virginia Tech and went on to reach the semifinals of the Indoor, where it fell to eventual national champion Southern Cal. LOOKING AT OLE MISS: Currently ranked No. 12 nationally, Ole Miss enters the National Indoor with an overall record of 2-1 in dual match play. Last time out the Rebels lost 4-2 to in-state rival Mississippi State in their annual nonconference clash played in Jackson, Miss. The Rebels boast three players ranked in the ITA singles poll including No. 5 Jonas Lutjen, No. 33 Nik Scholtz, and No. 95 William Kallberg. In doubles, the team of Kallberg and Adrian Forberg Skogeng are currently No. 25, while Scholtz and Lutjen are No. 43. Statistically, Lutjen leads the squad with an 18-5 singles record, while Kallberg is 14-4 and Johan Backstrom is 14-10 in 2012-13. The Rebels advanced to Seattle with regional round wins over Columbia (4-1) and NC State (4-0) last month in Oxford. Ole Miss is making its 18th overall trip to National Indoors and first since 2010. SERIES HISTORY: Georgia is 35-9 all-time vs. Ole Miss coming off a 4-3 win over the Rebels last season at home. Incidentally, the last time Ole Miss reached the National Indoors in 2010, the Bulldogs and Rebels met in the round of 16 with Georgia earning a 4-3 win. LAST TIME OUT: The No. 6 Georgia men s tennis team rebounded from a lost

With the win the Bulldogs improved to 4-1 on the season, dropping their in-state rival to 2-4. Georgia is now 59-9 all-time against the Yellow Jackets, good for its highest win total against any opponent in history. The win also avenged the Bulldogs 4-3 loss to Tech in Atlanta in 2011, a setback that snapped a 24-match winning streak for UGA in the rivalry series. YOUNG PUPS: Georgia has gotten strong play at the outset of the season from the team s freshmen. Rookie Ben Wagland has compiled a 12-4 mark overall and a 4-1 record in dual matches, including a clinch vs. VCU to send Georgia back to National Indoors. Austin Smith is 10-4 overall and 3-1 in duals, while Nick Wood - who joined the team in January - is also 3-1. The Bulldogs will need to rely heavily on their rookies in 2013, as at least two freshmen have played singles in each of the first five matches, while three have played four times. Georgia lost three of last season s regular starters to graduation. IN THE RANKINGS: Georgia remained No. 6 in the ITA team rankings for the fourth straight week on Feb. 5, and a new team ranking will not be released until Feb. 19 after Indoors. With that, the Bulldogs have now been ranked in the top six every week since May 2, 2011 and in the top-10 since March 29, 2011. Individually, Georgia boasts three players in the singles top 20 in KU Singh (No. 8), Hernus Pieters (No. 16), and Nathan Pasha (No. 19). In doubles, the team of Pieters and freshman Ben Wagland are No. 5 while Wagland is No. 29 with Pasha. RECAPPING THE FALL: The Georgia men s tennis team s fall season was highlighted by the run of junior Hernus Pieters and freshman Ben Wagland to the doubles final of the ITA National Indoor Championships in New York in November. Earlier in the fall, the duo won the consolation draw of the All American Championships in Tulsa to punch their ticket to Indoors, while sophomore Nathan Pasha won three qualifying matches to reach the singles main draw in Tulsa. Meanwhile, the four Bulldog freshmen played well at the Southern Intercollegiates, Bulldog Scramble, and ITA Southeast Regional as they geared up for their first collegiate dual match seasons. BULLDOGS PICKED TO WIN SEC EAST: A vote of the league s 13 head coaches has selected the sixth-ranked Georgia men s tennis team the early favorite the win the Southeastern Conference s Eastern Division in 2013, the league office announced. The reigning SEC Tournament champions and NCAA quarterfinalists received 65 total points including three first-place votes to place them atop the competitive SEC East, while Ole Miss was picked to win the West as well as the overall conference championship with 74. Tabbed to finish behind Georgia in the East is Tennessee (47), Florida (42), Kentucky (37), Vanderbilt (27), and South Carolina (13). The rest of the West behind the Rebels is Mississippi State (63), Texas A&M (53), Auburn (46), LSU (34), Alabama (22), and Arkansas (16). The preseason poll is a compilation of head coach votes using a 6-5-4-3-2-1 ranking system in the East and 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 in the West, which added Texas A&M this season. The other conference newcomer Missouri does not sponsor men s tennis at the NCAA level. Coaches also selected one conference champion, with each vote counting as one point. Manuel Diaz begins his 25th season as head coach of the Georgia men s tennis team in 2012-13. NICK WOOD JOINS TEAM EARLY: Georgia men s tennis head coach Manuel Diaz in November announced the signing of Nick Wood, who joined the team in January, a semester early. The Knoxville, Tenn., product was rated the No. 1 player in the South in each of the 12, 14, and 16 age groups, and No. 2 in the 18s.

At the time of his signing, he was the No. 11 player in the nation for his age group and is No. 4 in the signing class according to TennisRecruiting.net. Wood won national opens in the 12s, 14s, and 18s, and has made the ITF finals in Daytona Beach and the quarterfinals of the National Clay Courts in his career. Wood s father, Donie, was a tennis player for the University of Arkansas from 1987-90, and still ranks fourth in Razorbacks history for singles winning percentage in a season with a mark of 0.875 in 1988. His mother is Shari Wood and he has two brothers, Matt and Chase. VENABLES NAMED VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT: Georgia men s tennis head coach Manuel Diaz has announced the addition of Tristan Venables to the staff for the 2012-13 season as a volunteer coach. Venables attended and played tennis at the University of Denver before earning a bachelor of contemporary arts degree from Edith Cowan University in 2009. While at Denver, he played the No. 1 position and was named the team s MVP in 1997-98. From 1999-2012, he served as the head coach at Wembley Downs Tennis Club in Perth, Western Australia, which has an enrollment of over 400 members. He played State League from 1995-2012 and was part of the National League Finals Team held at the Australian Open in 2012. In 2009 he was one of 16 coaches given Tennis Australia High Performance Coach Qualification status. Tristan is a terrific addition, Diaz said. He brings a wealth of experience and fresh new ideas to our staff. He has been very well-received by both our players and coaches, and with the year already underway he is doing a fantastic job. We re already seeing the benefits of Tristan s work with our team. Venables visited UGA while coaching in 2005, where he met his wife, Jessica, a Georgia graduate. GEORGIA TENNIS TO HOST NCAAS IN 2014: The University of Georgia will host the 2014 NCAA Men s & Women s Tennis Championships, the NCAA announced Nov. 1. The Dan Magill Tennis Complex has hosted the men s tournament 24 times and the women s event three times, in addition to three combined tournaments for a total of 30, most recently in both 2010 and 2012. The event has been combined since 2006. The Georgia men s tennis team has won six NCAA titles on the men s side five of which came while playing in Athens. The women claimed the national title in 1994 and 2000 the former coming at home. The NCAA has recognized a national champion in men s tennis every year since 1946. It has done so in tournament format since 1977. The first women s championship was held in 1982. The tournaments have undergone some changes since their inceptions, including moving from a 16-team field to the current 64-team field in 1999. The first two rounds are held at on-campus sites, followed by the Round of 16 and beyond at the designated NCAA Championship site. ON DECK: The Bulldogs will return home for their next four matches, opening the outdoor season on Sun., Feb. 24 vs. Furman at 1 p.m. That will be immediately followed by a meeting with East Tennessee State on Mon., Feb. 25 at 2:30 p.m. THE MANUEL DIAZ FILE COACHING 25th season 562-118 (.827) career record Four NCAA Championships (1999, 2001, 2007, 2008) One of only two active coaches with multiple NCAA Championships Coached UGA to its first ITA Team Indoor National Championship in 2006, then went back-to-back, winning another in 2007 Three-time ITA National Coach of the Year (1995, 2001, 07) Six-time ITA Southeast Region Coach of the Year (1991, 92, 95, 2001, 06, 12) Five-time SEC Coach of the Year (1985, 95, 2001, 06, 07) 31 players have received 66 All-America honors 13 SEC regular-season titles, eight SEC Tournament titles (21 total) Finished the season ranked in the Top-5 18 times; finished Top-10 in 20 seasons and Top-25 in all 24 Appeared in NCAA Championship match 11 times (1989, 91, 93, 97, 98, 99, 2001, 02, 06, 07, 08) Seven individual singles National Champions Three individual doubles National Champions Seven four-time All-Americans 73 All-SEC selections Six four-time All-SEC honorees Four Academic All-Americans 40 Academic All-SEC accolades 15 SEC Scholar-Athlete Award winners Three Clayton-Wilhite Scholar-Athlete Award winners Three Joel Eaves Award winners Assistant Coach At UGA under Dan Magill from 1982-84 Promoted to Associate Head Coach in 1985 Became Head Coach for 1988-89 season upon Magill s retirement PLAYING DAYS College: University of Georgia (1972-75) Two-time All-American (1974-75) Three-time All-SEC selection (1973-75) Four-straight SEC team titles Seven SEC individual titles No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles in 1972 No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in 1973 No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles in 1974 No. 1 doubles in 1975 Two-time winner of Southern Collegiate Championships in singles in 1973-74 Southern Collegiate Doubles champion in 1973 Co-Captain of 1975 team that went 20-4 and won the SEC Championship Professional: Played professionally in the U.S., Europe and South America after college Recorded four wins against players ranked in the ATP Top 50 Team Tennis in Germany, 1980-81 Teaching Pro in Atlanta 1978-81 and in Puerto Rico from 1981-82 Puerto Rican Davis Cup Captain from 1992 to 1997 PERSONAL Married to the former Suzanne Rondeau of Toronto, Canada They have three sons: Manuel, III, 23, Eric, 20 (member of the tennis team), and Alex, 14 Born March 16, 1953 in San Juan, Puerto Rico Graduated from Sacred Heart Academy, 1971
