Do not give your timing band to any other person and be careful not to switch timing bands with other competitors. Do not walk over timing mats prior to your race, as this will set off your race time. RELAY TEAMS: The timing band is worn by each member of the team. Swimmer must pass on the timing band before cyclist removes bike from rack and cyclist must rack bike before passing on the timing band to the runner. Traffic Flow and Road Sharing The Kingy Tri is a social Tri and will always be about fun. We have kids, juniors, tempta, sprint and Olympic distances on the cycle leg and need to set the wave order to allow for the progressive cycle distance increase and ensuring riders u-turning don t clash with riders going further. The wave order for the Olympic distance has been set this race as we have a curfew on the new cycle course through Pearl Street and need to get riders home faster. So the slower swimmers/slower riders cannot start last. The cycle course will be hectic and have a loading that requires all riders to remain safe by staying left, eyes up, and keeping your line when cornering. Stragglers may be advanced through the cycle leg if the permit time is exceeded. There will be traffic diversions and change of conditions from 6am until 1pm when the last competitor is finished the race. In place to avoid any confusion there will be 1) Flashing VMS signs off the highway directing traffic to the southern exit 2) Detour signs from council 8
3) Barricading to ensure cars and bikes and runners don t meet 4) Traffic Flow Maps Refer to maps for all changes to road conditions for the morning. Transition You must have the bike sticker correctly attached to your bike and a properly fastened helmet with the helmet sticker in place prior to entering transition. Once in transition place your bike on one of the racks provided in your correct age category (these will be clearly signed). The transition area has been designed so that no section gets a better advantage than another section. Neatly set up the rest of your race equipment and remove any non-race equipment from transition. A bag storage area is located under the Cudgen SLSC. Familiarise yourself with the location of your bike and the entry/exit points to transition. Transition will be open between 2.00pm and 5.00pm on the Saturday and between 5.00am and 6.50am on the Sunday. Transition will re-open after the last runner commences the run leg. No early exit will be granted. Water Safety Cudgen Surf Life Saving Club will be manning the water to ensure the safety of all the participants in the swim. There will be 6 paddle boats in the water, 1 jetski and four IRB s in the water throughout the duration of the race. All participants must go around the buoys as indicated in the swim map and are expected to act in a responsible manner. Water Temperature The temperature will be checked the morning of the race by Triathlon QLD officials. Wetsuits will not be allowed if the water is above 24 degrees Celsius. Wave Times Please familiarise yourself with your wave number and proposed start time. A list of wave start times is located on the website and will be displayed at registration. The Olympic distance races are set to gain advantage from the tide change given they are longer swims. We have many groups of athletes/participants to consider and our program aims at being consistent and fair and recognises all groups have requirements, particularly the kids who need to go first. We attempt to locate each year a date where the incoming full tide occurs about 7am NSW, but on a Sunday morning and there maybe only about 20 such days. We then allow for the incoming tide water, the change of tide and outgoing tide across the three start locations, as each is affected by the changes of the tide differently, and each location has swims either in a circle, straight out and back, or towards the sea. We also have learned that with heavy rain, or higher tides the movement of water is faster. We have become hydrologists and have now seen the effect of the rule of 12 (no real idea why it matters but it does). At the end of the day we have 2 goals (1) we won t swim against a 9
tide or current because after the third, 12th of a tide is becomes increasingly difficult; and (2) we don t want our swimmers walking on the sand, or hitting the bridge. And those of you who have competed with us in the early days know all about the problems with currents in the creek, or our first two Tris which were open water swims in large seas. Therefore the category starts are keyed to the start locations as the tide changes and distance of the swim increases.
