A Big 12 Conference All-Star Team represented the United States in 2003 at the 22nd World University Games women s basketball competition Aug. 20-31, in Daegu, South Korea. Team USA finished 6th of 17 teams in the highly-competitive international competition. The World University Games, held every two years and organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), is a multi-sport competition open to men and women between the ages of 17 and 28 (born between Jan. 1, 1973 and Dec. 31, 1985) and who are, or have been within the past year, a student at a college or university. Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly served as head coach of the team. Missouri head coach Cindy Stein and ISU assistant coach Latoja Harris completed the staff. Dru Hancock, Big 12 Associate Commissioner, served as the conference liaison and ISU senior associate media relations director Erin Rosacker was media coordinator. Team members included: Steffanie Blackmon, Baylor; Tera Bjorklund, Colorado; LaToya Davis, Texas Tech; Kate Fagan, Colorado; Erin Grant, Texas Tech; Anissa Hastings, Texas; Alexa Johnson, Nebraska; Anne O Neil, Iowa State; Heather Schreiber, Texas; Evan Unrau, Missouri; Chelsi Welch, Oklahoma; and Toccara Williams, Texas A&M. This marked the third Big 12 Conference women s all-star team and the sixth overall. Big 12 men completed tours in 1998, 2000 and 2002. The first women s all-star team went 5-1 in 1999 while playing games in Finland and Sweden. The 2001 Big 12 women s squad was 5-0 in its tour through Austria, Germany and the Slovak Republic. Game 1 -- Team USA 62, Hungary 56 Daegu, South Korea -- Despite a slow start and close finish, Team USA got a 62-56 win over Hungary under its belt in the preliminary rounds of the World University Games. Team USA hit five-of-six free throws in the final minute to ice the game. Heather Schreiber (Texas) led the team with 22 points and seven rebounds. Annissa Hastings (Texas) was the top rebounder with eight. Team USA outrebounded Hungary 37-19. Game 2 -- Italy 81, Team USA 64 Gyeongju, South Korea -- Team USA dropped to 1-1 in preliminary action at the World University Games with an 81-64 loss to Italy. Tera Bjorklund (Colorado) tallied her first points of the Games with a layup to start off Team USA s scoring, but 17 first-half turnovers helped the Italians gain a lead they would not relinquish. Heather Schreiber (Texas) once again led the U.S. squad with 21 points. Game 3 -- Team USA 104, Thailand 63 DAEGU, South Korea -- Team USA rounded out pool play with a 104-63 win over Thailand to up its record to 2-1. Thailand s average height was 5-7, with no player taller than 5-11, thus enabling the Americans to a 49-19 rebounding advantage. Team USA s offense was fueled by fast breaks and 55.6 percent accuracy from within the arc. Four Americans scored in double digits, led by Heather Schreiber s (Texas) game-high 23 points. LaToya Davis (Texas Tech) tallied 20 points, while Evan Unrau (Missouri) and Anne O Neil (Iowa State) added 13 each. Unrau grabbed nine boards and Schreiber dished seven assists. Game 4 -- China 97, Team USA 54 KYOUNGJU, South Korea -- China s seasoned offense was no match for Team USA in the first game of second round pool play at the World University Games, winning the game 97-54. China outscored the US 53-24 in the second half and shot a sizzling 61 percent for the game. 2003 Big 12 All-Star Team Front Row: LaToya Davis, TTU; Chelsi Welch, OU; Alexa Johnson, NU; Anne O Neil, ISU; Tera Bjorklund, CU; Evan Unrau, MU; Kate Fagan, CU. Back Row: Toccara Williams, TAMU; Anissa Hastings, UT; Heather Schreiber, UT; Steffanie Blackmon, BU; Erin Grant, TTU. Chelsi Welch (Oklahoma) came off the bench and drilled 5-of-7 threepointers in the fourth quarter to finish with a team-high 15 points. Heather Schreiber (Texas) was the only other U.S. player in double figures with 10 points. Game 5 -- Serbia-Montenegro 74, Team USA 61 DAEGU, South Korea -- Team USA s cold second-half shooting performance allowed Serbia-Montenegro to capture a 74-61 win in the World University Games. The USA hit just 27.3 percent from the floor and was outscored 45-26 in the second half. Heather Schreiber (Texas) finished with a game-high 19 points and a team-best nine rebounds. Tera Bjorklund (Colorado) added 16 points. Team USA committed only 13 turnovers but was beaten on the glass 40-32. Game 6 -- Team USA 72, Czech Republic 56 DAEGU, South Korea -- Four players scored in double figures to lead Team USA to a 72-56 win over the Czech Republic. The Americans closed out the first half on a 14-0 scoring run that gave them a 42-33 advantage and then used an 8-0 run to end the game. Heather Schreiber (Texas) and Annissa Hastings (Texas) led the team with 19 and 18 points, respectively. Hastings contributed 13 rebounds and Evan Unrau (Missouri) grabbed 10 to help the U.S. to a 40-23 rebounding advantage. Game 7 -- Serbia-Montenegro 72, Team USA 70 KYOUNGJU, South Korea -- Team USA and Serbia-Montenegro squared off in a rematch in the World University Games, playing for fifth place. Serbia-Montenegro pulled off a 72-70 win that featured seven tied scores. Free throws made the difference in the game as Serbia-Montenegro converted 19-of-22 while the USA made just six trips to the line, sinking three. Heather Schreiber (Texas) led all scorers with 25 points while Evan Unrau (Missouri) and Annissa Hastings (Texas) added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Schreiber drained 5-of-7 treys in the game. 2003 Big 12 All-Star Team Stats (3-4) PLAYER FG FGA FG% 3FG 3FGA 3FG% FT FTA FT% RB RPG A ST BS TO PTS PPG Schreiber 48 111.432 21 62.339 22 26.846 38 5.4 16 16 1 23 139 19.9 Hastings 24 45.533 0 1.000 5 14.357 45 7.5 4 15 0 19 53 8.8 Unrau 21 52.404 5 16.312 11 15.733 29 4.1 8 8 1 16 58 8.3 Bjorklund 19 45.422 0 1.000 11 17.647 28 4.0 5 1 1 24 49 7.0 Davis 16 27.593 0 0.000 9 13.692 26 4.3 2 6 2 6 41 6.8 Blackmon 10 18.556 0 0.000 1 4.250 17 4.3 5 5 1 6 21 5.3 Williams 11 24.458 0 0.000 11 18.611 10 1.4 19 18 0 12 33 4.7 Welch 9 30.300 7 19.368 6 6 1.000 7 1.0 3 2 0 6 31 4.4 Grant 4 4 1.000 0 0.000 9 10.900 3 0.8 5 3 0 6 17 4.3 O Neil 10 33.303 4 14.286 4 7.571 10 1.4 12 8 1 22 28 4.0 Fagan 2 14.143 0 8.000 5 6.833 6 1.5 2 0 0 4 9 2.3 Johnson 2 16.125 0 3.000 4 4 1.000 4 1.0 0 4 1 9 8 2.0 TOTALS 176 419.420 31 127.291 98 140.700 223 31.9 81 86 8 153 551 68.9 147 www.big12sports.com

The 2001 All-Star team cruised to a perfect 5-0 record on its August tour through Europe. This year was the fourth that the Big 12 sponsored either a men s or women s basketball all-star tour. The 2001 squad was the first one to go undefeated although it played one less game than the previous three squads due to an opponent cancellation. Colorado head coach Ceal Barry and her support staff traveled with the team, as did Big 12 Associate Commissioner Dru Hancock. Eleven Big 12 teams were represented on the 2001 All-Stars. Texas Tech did not send a student-athlete due to a conflict with its own foreign tour. Team members included: Danielle Crockrom, Baylor; Mandy Nightingale and Sabrina Scott, Colorado; Angie Welle, Iowa State; KC Hilgenkamp, Kansas; Kristin Rethman, Kansas State; Kerensa Barr, Missouri; Steph Jones, Nebraska; LaNeishea Caufield, Oklahoma; Shelby Hutchens, Oklahoma State; Tracy Cook, Texas; and LaToya Rose, Texas A&M. The 2001 All-Stars played games in Austria, Germany and the Slovac Republic. Following is a brief synopsis of each game on the tour. The Big 12 Conference sponsored its first women s basketball All-Star Team in 1999. The tour was organized by Bill Foster, former Big 12 basketball consultant, and Dick Halterman, head coach at Oklahoma State. OSU served as the host school for the All-Star Tour. In addition to Halterman, his assistant coaches and support staff traveled with the team. A student-athlete from each of the Big 12 teams was chosen for the squad. OSU placed two players on the team as Colorado was not represented due to a conflict with the Buffs own foreign tour. The 1999 team was comprised of Nicole Collins (Baylor), Jennifer Crow (Oklahoma State), Tracy Franklin (Missouri), Jaclyn Johnson (Kansas), Devon Magness (Oklahoma State), Cori McDill (Nebraska), Nicky Ramage (Kansas State), Melinda Schmucker (Texas Tech), Prissy Sharpe (Texas A&M), Megan Taylor (Iowa State), Phylesha Whaley (Oklahoma) and JoRuth Woods (Texas). The All-Stars compiled a 5-1 record on the 11- day tour through Finland and Sweden playing both club and national teams from those two countries in addition to a team from Russia. The team s lone loss was to the Finnish National Team. Whaley led the team in scoring and rebounding with 13.8 ppg and 5.3 rpg. Woods and Johnson also registered double-figure scoring with 12.0 ppg and 11.2 ppg, respectively. Collins dished out a team-high 23 assists and Crow nabbed a team-best 14 steals. The All-Stars out-scored opponents by a 17.2 average per game and outrebounded them by a 12.5 average. The Big 12 Conference sponsored men s All-Star Teams in 1998 and 2000.
