Inside 4250 Smothers Road, P.O. Box575 Editor: Rob Ciccotelli Westerville, Ohio 43086-0575 robertciccotelli@wowway.com Commodore s Comments by Peter Rothman From Mark Walburg's comments on our Hoover Sailing Club Facebook page: On a humorous note, well to me anyway, I recently received an email from someone looking to sell a Windmill sailboat. The email was sent to our HSC web page. The area code to call this person was 702. This made me kind of curious. The area code 702, it turns out, is the Las Vegas area. Their "Hoover" and our "Hoover" are just a bit different, so I sent him/her to the Windmill web page. The calendar says Spring is coming. I am keeping my fingers crossed. If you get a chance, please check on your boat/s in winter storage. Extreme cold can do funny things to tie downs, ropes, straps, and tarps. Stay Warm, Peter 1-4 Junior Sailing 5 Fleet News 5-7 Secretary's Report by Ellery Block HOOVER SAILING CLUB MINUTES MEETING OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS DEC 9, 2013 What a great posting and way to go Lavender's! If you haven't been out to our Facebook page you really should visit. There are some really great photos posted. Please join the group and add any photos and or news that you would like to share. On a similar topic, Kathy Bachman has graciously taken on the Publicity Chair for HSC this year. We both are looking forward to using modern media (our new web page, Facebook, Twitter, etc) to spread the message about HSC to the Columbus area. BOG Reports Commodore Smith called the BOG meeting to order at 7:00 PM at Mark White s house, with Peter Rothman hosting. The following BOG members and Committee Chairs attended, constituting a quorum: Commodore: Bill Smith, Treasurer: Mark White, Secretary: Ellery Block, Membership Secretary: Lisa Aspery, Member at Large/Docks Committee Chair: Peter Rothman, Vice Commodore/Grounds (Continued on page 2) 1

(Continued from page 1) Committee Chair: Jeff Tyndall, Rear Commodore/House Committee Chair: Stephanie Bahr, Leadline Editor: Kathy Trask, Safety Committee Chair: Chris Fogle, Social Committee Chair: Sarah Lynn, Sail Instruction Chair: Jamie Jones, Past Commodore/ Planning and Projects Chair: John Church. Also in attendance were three members who were elected to next year s BOG: Robert Ciccotelli, Steve Rendina, and Dave Stetson. 1.0 Committee Reports Treasurer s Report. Mark White presented the Treasurer s report covering financial transactions through vember 2013. Fiscal 2013 is now complete (Dec 1, 2012 - v 30, 2013). Revenue to close out the year was almost precisely as expected, in total and by line. Overall in 2013, HSC took in $154,357 in income, up $4,279 from 2012, with the increase driven by SI. Dues income was down 2.8% ($2,228) from 2012. Like revenue, expenditures were dead on projections for the month. Overall in 2013, HSC spent $162,912 on a cash flow basis (which would include capital improvements) for an $8,555 loss for the year. Major capital improvements included the new Clubhouse patio ($6,900) and the unplanned need for a new roof on the Rental House ($2,110 net of insurance recoveries) drove this loss. Adjusted for capital improvements, we finished 2013 at a virtual break even; hence the Club s total assets were unchanged from 2012. Secretary s Report. Ellery Block presented the Secretary s report. He moved to approve the minutes of October s BOG Meeting. The motion was seconded by John Church and passed. Ellery presented the 2014 insurance policy premiums, which the Board approved and gave Ellery permission to sign the contract. Membership Committee Report. report was provided. Docks Committee Report. Peter Rothman presented the Docks Committee report. Peter noted that the weather was close to perfect on three straight Saturdays during vember, which permitted four new dock sections to be built for the Main Dock, most of which is now basically new. Most of the loose brackets have been repaired. Thanks, Docks Committee, for your hard work in getting this done. Grounds Committee Report. Jeff Tyndall presented the Grounds Committee report. He stated that some topsoil will have to be placed around the newly poured concrete. He also reported that the Rental Property s roof has now been replaced. Jeff noted his concern that HSC does not have a person assigned to manage its Rental Property. House Committee Report. Stephanie Bahr presented the House Committee report. She stated that Jim and Evelyn Ferguson winterized the Clubhouse on vember 21st. They applied the winter locks, had Delco turn off the water to the Clubhouse at the street valve, and left on electric power to the Block House, security lights, and the aerator for the septic tank. Evelyn also updated the Clubhouse closing instructions and will update the opening instructions. Racing Committee Report. provided. report was Safety Committee Report. Chris Fogle presented the Safety Committee report. He (Continued on page 3) 2

(Continued from page 2) stated that all HSC s Rescue Boats have been prepared for the winter. Sail Instruction (SI) Report. Jamie Jones provided the SI report, which is summarized here. Jamie stated that vember was a relatively busy month during which SI started to set schedules, fees, and budgets for the 2014 sailing season. The SI application and schedule are being updated and posted on the HSC Website and a notice is being emailed to last summer s students. Columbus Academy sessions for 2014 and the Westerville Summer Camp Activities Expo in March have been signed up. Jamie represented HSC at the I-LYA Regional Sailing Programs Symposium that was hosted last month by the Erie Yacht Club. Tom Hubbell (from US Sailing) was there and brought their perspective toward Learn to Sail (LTS) and youth sailing in general. They will provide funding for their Reach Program to clubs that qualify for Community Sailing Center certification. This Program utilizes sailing as an educational platform, challenging youth to embrace education, establish a love of learning and explore productive STEM based careers. Also, US Sailing has started a membership drive called the Member Value Partner Program, in which clubs will get money to spend in the US Sailing Store for each member they either bring in or renew. Since SI s 2014 budget includes funds for US Sailing materials, HSC s participation could free up money for the enhanced safety training the BOG discusses. Jamie will follow up with US Sailing on their programs. Leatherlips will host the spring I-LYA Regional Sailing Programs Symposium in March. Junior Race Team (JRT) Report. Doug Squires provided the JRT report, which is summarized here. Doug attended the I-LYA Conference the weekend of December 8th. Items discussed were Ohio s return-to-play Law, US Sailing certifications and Integrating Learn To Sail programs with junior race teams. Leadline Editor s Report. report was provided. Social Committee Report. provided. report was Publicity Committee Report. report was provided. However, incoming Commodore Peter Rothman announced that Kathy Bachman will chair this Committee during 2014. Planning and Projects (P&P) Committee Report. report was provided. 2.1 Old Business The second (final) reading of changes to Bylaw 59, Paragraph E was moved by Peter Rothman, seconded by Mark White, and approved. The new paragraph with added words underlined (it will appear in the next Directory without the underlining), reads as follows: E) Cash contributions to junior sailing unrelated to the described fundraising or income-producing events shall be placed in a fund to be used for equipment acquisition and replacement. Equipment may include but not be limited to sailboats, masts, and sails subject to Board of Governors approval to ensure there is no fraud, waste or abuse. (Continued on page 4) 3

(Continued from page 3) However, due to the ongoing annual costs associated with rescue, coach or safety boats, the purchase of a motorboat for Junior Sailing through this fund will be subject to the same approval and controls as other HSC expenditures as described in the HSC Constitution Article VII, Section 10, Paragraph E. Any unspent amounts remaining in this fund at the end of a fiscal year shall be carried over into subsequent fiscal years. 3.0 New Business There was discussion of moving docks In up one week to March 29 to avoid conflict with the Intersectional college regatta on April 4. The Commodore committed to requesting permission for the city of Columbus to do so. 4.0 Adjournment A motion to adjourn was made by Ellery Block and seconded by Mark White. The motion was approved and the meeting was adjourned. House by Stephanie Bahr The house is still closed up tight for the winter. However, spring will be here before we know it. The House Committee will be needed prior to Dock's In to help get the kitchen ready. Please save the date for Sat. March 23 to spend a few hours that day preparing for Dock's In on March 29t. Remember all hands are required on Dock In. If for some reason you cannot make it on March 29th call me to make arrangements to make it up. My number is 614-425-0725. Jr Sailing by Doug Squires The Junior Race Team winter meeting is Sunday uary 26th at 5pm, Capri Bowling Lanes near the intersection of 71 and 161. Winter regattas, training and the coaching situation will be discussed. New and old members are encouraged to attend. The Junior Race Team report: Some JRT members are not just dreaming about sailing this winter, they are sailing. Good luck to Grace Yingling who is sailing her Opti at the Valentines Day Regatta in St Pete Florida February 1-2. We had a huge turnout at the Andrews' circa-1870 house in Granville, which was beautifully decorated like a winter wonderland with lots of tiny white lights. (Continued from page 5) WEDNESDAY EVENING RACES will be scored as a separate series next season, and the top five places will be recognized. As usual the races will be counted by the boat, not the skipper, so give the race committee YOUR boat number if you want credit for your score in another boat. MIDWINTERS WEST will be raced on uary 30-February 2 at Mission Bay Yacht Club, San Diego. MIDWINTERS EAST is scheduled for March 2-7 at St. Petersburg. Mark Andrew with Matt Calore crewing, Tom Hubbell with crew John Yingling and Charlotte Bauer, and Kevin Tschanz with Bob France crewing are all planning to attend that fun event. Good luck, gang! DOCKS IN is Saturday, March 29. Fleet Captain Louis Chicoine reminds us that preparedness is essential. Items to check: Hiking Straps need to be replaced? Hardware needs to be tightened? Ring Dings need to be taped? Diamond Wire tension? Bow Registration current year? Trailer Lights/Wiring need to be replaced? Trailer License Tag current year? Other equipment needs? How about those sails? LAKE ERIE DISTRICTS will be held at Vermilion Boat Club on June 28 and 29, according to District Governor Ben France..(Continued on page 7) 2013 Thistle fleet holiday party 6

(Continued from page 6) GREAT LAKES REGIONAL REGATTA is set for rth Cape Yacht Club on July 12 and 13, according to Regional VP Steve Lavender. THE RESERVOIR ISN'T ROCKY--With the temperature hovering in the low 40's, I drove across it shortly before sunset on uary 12, and there wasn't an ice cube in sight in spite of those early uary sub-zero temps. Hoover was totally full, and it's little ripples beckoned tantalizingly in the late afternoon light. It would have been a great day to go sailing; however, "The Columbus Dispatch" recently reported that the Lake had turned over its sediment so fast that some areas of Columbus were experiencing problems with terrible-tasting drinking water. Apparently it wasn't contaminated for consumption, but it smelled and tasted pretty gross. Let's hope that we have an early spring warm up and maybe that gunk will settle back down so that we can splash our boats soon. HERE'S LOOKING FORWARD TO A GREAT NEW SEASON!
