Commodore Greetings Everyone, October is here and the scent of Fall is in the air. Like magic, the Halloween decorations have appeared, giving our club a festive look to begin the season. We re working hard to make sure you ll be comfy and warm this winter. Things are progressing with the improvements. The concrete sections are set and I want to thank the members who worked on this project to enlarge our patio area. I want to say how very proud I am of our club! On September 17 th, we held our first Wounded Warrior Cruise. When the Vets arrived, our Vice Commodore greeted and directed them to the patio. I met each one as they entered, shaking hands and introducing myself. We gather on the lawn as Ms. Ellee Trowbridge sang our National Anthem. I introduced our captains and gave some general information about the cruise. The Vets and several of the volunteers who d come to help, boarded the boats and set out. They enjoyed a two hour cruise past the Iowa. When they arrived at the dock, we had a delicious barbeque waiting for them. The smiles on everyone s faces said it all. They shared stories of the Dolphins and Sea Lions they saw and the good conversations enjoyed. One looked me in the eye and said He let me drive! Four short words but with a powerful meaning. It was a picture perfect day on the water and at the club. We had them sign a club burgee to commemorate our first Wounded Warrior Cruise. It s proudly on display at the club. When it was time to say good-bye, all unanimously agreed they wanted to do it again and would bring more of their fellow Vets next time. I want to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to all the members who came and worked so hard to help put this event over the top! They are: Flag Officers: Vice Commodore Tommy Wheeler and Rear Commodore Dale West. Board Member: Lorne O Sullivan. Port Captain: Tony Rietdyk. Boat Owners: Mike Howard, Don Warner, and their crews. The Club s Dream Team Volunteers: Hap Wood, Joe Derrico, Ron Dietel, John Ensley, Frank Franco, Margaret Howard, Polly Mullen, Janet Saterfield, Staff Commodore Jeanne Stafford, and my wife Carolyn. It would not have happened without all your support! Commodore Roy C. Queen The Scuttlebutt 2

Vice Commodore Tommy Wheeler Well here we are moving into October already. It has been a very busy September. We had a cruise-out to Two Harbors (thanks Becky), the Veterans harbor cruise and BBQ (great job Roy), a wedding, a memorial service and of course the weekly Friday night pot lucks. It is good to see that the new members are joining in and helping out on the activities. Membership is strong and the team is doing a great job. We currently have three members taking the Piloting course offered by the Power Boat Squadron at Shoreline Yacht Club. Another great opportunity to mingle with other clubs and build on those deep rooted friendships. I continue to get notices from the SCYA regarding upcoming races, training events, and special events (model sail boat races) that we might wish to participate in. I ll pass them forward as expeditiously as possible. If something pops up that you would like to attend and you have any questions about going please feel free to contact me. Coming this month are our cruise-out to the America Legion in Newport Beacg, our Halloween party at the club house and in November the Annual General Membership Meeting at the Navy Golf Course in Los Alamitos. More details will be available soon. I ll see you at the club. Very Respectfully, Tommy Wheeler 2016 Vice Commodore CWO3 USN ret The Scuttlebutt 3

Rear Commodore Dale West Hello, October is upon us. Hard to believe the holiday season is nearing (especially since the temperatures for the last several days were near 100) but the seasons come and they go. On to the Holiday season! I d like to thank you all for your understanding concerning the Eric Stone event. I passed along all of your comments and he was deeply touched by the well wishes during the crisis with his mother. While she did pull through the issues in September, she still has a long journey ahead of her. Eric and I thank you for your support. Welcome aboard to the following New Members: Glenn Twitchell and Debbie Jahn Former US Navy 38 Lagoon Beach Access Ronald and Kay Dietel Former USAF Welcome Prospective Members: Arthur and Mevina Li Winders USNSA 24 Schiada Passin Wind Frank and Crystal Lawson Former Navy 32 Bayliner - Main Event I hope to see the new and perspective members around the club house and at the events often! Thanks! Dale West Rear Commodore The Scuttlebutt 4

Jr. Staff Commodore Gary Halliburton Dear Members, We are forming a Nominating Committee to search for those who would like to become more involved in the workings of the Navy Yacht Club Long Beach. I would like to have one more person on the Nominating Committee. Please contact me if you are able to participate on the committee. Those interested in joining our Board as a Director, please submit your photo, a short biography of your nautical experiences, and a little about why you want to become a Director. As part of our annual elections (pursuant to our Bylaws), we will be electing four Directors. A Director is a voting member on the Board and attends meetings at the club on the 2 nd Wednesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. If you would like to join us at a meeting to see how we work, please feel free to attend any meeting on the 2 nd Wednesday of the month. We also are looking for a member who likes to party. The Fleet Captain is in charge of our monthly activity, whether it is a cruise-out to another club, or some place on land. We once had a group go to Temecula in a limousine for wine tastings. If you like to plan parties, then the Fleet Captain position is made for you. Currently our Nominating Committee consists of Roy Queen, Victor Padilla, Jeannie Stafford and myself, Gary Halliburton. You may contact any one of us if you are interested in becoming a Director, Fleet Captain or being on the Nominating Committee. Thank you, Gary Halliburton Jr. Staff Commodore Ghalliburton21@gmail.com 562/883-2604 The Scuttlebutt 5

Race Committee Chair Chris Mewes On October 15 th the Club is hosting the Navy Day Regatta; this is a two race regatta with a short sprint race followed by a longer buoy race. If you would like to participate in the regatta, race entry forms are available at the club or on line. If you want to have a fun day on the water, without racing your boat, there are position available on the race committee boat, see Tony Rietdyk or Chris Mewes. If a land event is more your style, there is an after-race taco fest at the club, contact Becky Rietdyk if you would like to attend and/or help out.
