Tournaments are controlled competitive environments that allow practitioners to display & improve their skills. Some students may think tournaments are about who is better but in Songahm Taekwondo, the objective is always how you can make you better. Competing with a good attitude is one thing we in the ATA try to achieve on the mats. We are excited about this Tournament since our last In-School tournament was quite some time ago on July 28th. We will start at 9:30am The tournaments usually run to about 1:00pm. Since the tournament is closely following the Belt Testing, mostly everyone who was ready to participate in Testing will also be prepared & ready to participate in the Tournament. Kickboxing Classes at Marshall s ATA Martial Arts Marshalls ATA Martial Arts is continually evolving in order to provide the best program & martial arts training to our students & families. When we began our school many years ago, we were known as Marshall s ATA Taekwondo & Karate for Kids. We were also known as Marshall s ATA Black Belt Academy. To be clear; we love teaching martial arts to children and most of our current student base is indeed youngsters. Although we taught classes for all ages, we didn t want to be perceived as just a school conducting classes only for children, even though seventy percent of all students in the ATA are indeed children. Parent s say they want their child(ren) to learn the discipline, character building & Life Skills taught in the martial arts. Even though everyone has their own goals, I wanted older kids and adults as well to know they were invited to train as well. After a bit of research, I determined that the name Tae Kwon Do was not as well known as Karate among the general public. So I rebranded our name to Marshall s ATA Martial Arts. And although we are loyal to Taekwondo, I respect the values and benefits that can be achieved from all styles of martial arts. They all have their pluses and minuses and although I have my preferences based on a long lived experience with various martial arts disciplines, I will never be caught up in a debate about who s style is the best. I ll leave that to individual preferences. Many adults want to relieve stress, get stronger, and maintain their fitness levels in order to keep up with their daily responsibilities, work, family, health & well-being. Many would like to train in martial arts but don t have the time, perseverance, finances, discipline or desire to commit to a traditional program. Some adults have an issue with accountability to the authority of a Martial Arts Instructor. The discipline of the Martial arts is not a quick fix and there are no shortcuts to Black Belt Excellence. With that being said, I would like to introduce a Non- Contact Fitness or Cardio Kickboxing workout at Marshall s ATA Martial Arts. Subtract the combat aspect and boxing is still a great total-body workout. You re constantly moving, it s challenging muscular endurance, cardio, strength, flexibility, body composition & a brain workout as well. You re working on power, speed, balance, agility, coordination. It s a lot of bang for your buck. You re exhausted, dripping sweat, and have worked so hard you can t hold your arms up. But you walk out feeling confident, inspired. That s what keeps you going. The world is more stressed than ever. People just want to hit something, and kickboxing is a way to alleviate the stress of a hectic day in a very healthy way. It was just a matter of time before it became more appealing to the masses thanks to the popularity of UFC & MMA. Page 2 Protocol for Testing Students must be on a program in order to be eligible to test. Students must wear their traditional white uniform. Any student who is at the testing but not participating is still expected to be wearing their complete uniform. Leadership students are expected to assist in whatever capacity necessary. Page 3 Kicking Off the New Year With An In-School Tournament At Marshall s ATA Martial Arts, we have said that If a student comes regularly to class and never competes in a tournament, but only trains diligently for their next belt rank promotion inside the confines of the school, that is like training for a big sporting event that they are never going to play in. Tournament competition teaches us a lot about ourselves and whether or not we can perform even when we are nervous or maybe even a bit reluctant perhaps in a strange environment. We learn what it means to perform under the watchful eye of a panel of judges against other martial artists of similar rank, age & capabilities. Not giving in and being overwhelmed by our own nervousness, but competing in Forms or Sparring (traditional or combat) or Weapons in front of an audience of supportive competitors shows courage & strength of character whether you win or lose. But we all know that there is no Losing you either win or you learn. Either way, the preparation for competition is as much mental as it is physical and it is a way of sharpening our skills & testing our mettle. It is also a fun & safe day with our friends.

Page 5 Marshall s ATA Valentine s Day Belt Testing The Marshall s ATA Spirit Cycle will soon be winding down and we will culminate this training cycle with what we are dubbing our Valentine s Day/Winter Belt Testing. Our students have been working diligently earning their three stripes in preparation for this Belt Testing & Black Belt Midterm. They will earn their spot at the Testing and will feel the pride and sense of accomplishment of a job well done. A new feature at this upcoming Winter Belt Testing will be a demonstration of our new Warrior Fit 18 combination drill. We have worked since last Spring on memorizing, learning and practicing part of these 18 Warrior Fit combinations. Over the last few weeks, we have concentrated heavily during class on completing the remainder of the combinations. The combinations are a gathering of boxing, Muay tai & taekwondo punching, kicking, Knees & elbow drills. Many of our students have indeed stepped up to the challenge to learn these drills while also learning their primary Testing material. This will lead to a new fuller, richer and more exciting aspect to our taekwondo training as I intend to introduce a new separate noncontact, noncombat Kickboxing class for our students and families at Marshall s ATA that is centered on a class plan that will rely heavily on the knowledge and use of these drills. The goal of this class will be to enhance your martial arts punching capabilities. I also will have a class for non-martial artists who want the myriad benefits of a kickboxing class. Muscle toning Increased flexibility Better Circulation Stress Relief Full Body Workout Defend Yourself Increased Heart Rate Improve Balance Improve Coordination It s Fun A 150 pound person practicing kickboxing for 30 minutes per session can expect to burn between 325 and 450 calories. In many cases, this amount of calories will comprise around one-quarter of that person's daily caloric intake. This being the case, kickboxing is a highly effective addition to almost anyone's weight loss program.
