INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES GAME #66 / Home Game #37 Gwinnett Braves (35-32) at Indianapolis Indians (31-34) Thursday, June 18, 2009 -- First Pitch @ 7:00 p.m. EDT Victory Field -- Indianapolis, Ind. Braves LHP Jonny Venters (0-0, 11.25) vs. Indians RHP Eric Hacker (2-1, 4.09) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TODAY S STARTING PITCHERS: Indianapolis probable starter Eric Hacker is scheduled to oppose the Gwinnett Braves for the second time this season... In his last start against the Braves on May 26, Hacker was dominant, allowing just one run on five hits, while striking out four, but did not figure in the final decision... Hacker has continued to pitch well since his outing in Gwinnett, including winning his last two starts, allowing just two runs on four hits over seven innings against Buffalo on June 6 and shutting out Norfolk for 5.1 innings on June 12... Since joining the Tribe on May 19, Hacker has yet to take a loss, posting a 2-0 record, a miniscule ERA of 1.93 and has allowed just six earned runs in 28.0 innings of work... Scheduled to oppose Hacker is Gwinnett probable starter Jonny Venters, who is set to make just his second career Triple-A start on Thursday... In his only other start with the Braves this season, Venters received a no decision after allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits, while striking out five and walking three in four innings of work... With Double-A Mississippi earlier this season, Venters posted a 4-4 record with a 2.76 ERA, 40 strikeouts, 35 walks, and 60 hits allowed in 65.1 innings over 12 starts. INDIANA JONES: OF Garrett Jones continues to make a push for Triple-A All-Star honors as the slugger improved his average to a team best.291 with his 2-for-3 effort in game one of Wednesday, June 17th s doubleheader against Gwinnett... Jones has also homered four times in his past nine games to tie with 1B Steve Pearce for the team lead with 10 long balls on the season and in doing so has become one of just six players in all of Minor League baseball and the only player in the International League with double digit home runs (10) and double digit steals (12)... Jones also ranks among the IL s best in several offense categories, including RBI (T-3rd, 42), home runs (T-5th, 10), hits (T-5th, 68) and total bases (7th, 113)... The speedy slugger Jones has also already surpassed his original season-high of 10 steals that came back in 2004 when he was with the New Britain (Conn.) Rock Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. DYNAMIC DUOS: 1B Steve Pearce and RF Garrett Jones have powered the Tribe s offense over the past 10 games, as the duo has combined to hit eight of the teams s 10 homers, score 12 of their 39 runs and collect 18 of their 37 RBI... Aside from any pairing of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre s Shelley Duncan, John Rodriguez, and Juan Miranda, Pearce and Jones also lead all other International League duos in combined RBI (82) and total bases (220) and also rank in the top five with 20 home runs... Both players have been making the most out of scoring opportunities as they are coming up clutch with runners in scoring position... Pearce currently ranks sixth in the IL with a.444 average (24-for-54) with runners in scoring position and has posted 32 RBI as well, while Jones leads the Tribe with 33 RBI and has posted a.277 average (18-for-65) when runners are at second or third. RELIEVING SOME PRESSURE: Though the Indians bullpen was not used in game one of Wednesday, June 18th s doubleheader and received the loss in game two, they have still dominated as of late The Tribe bullpen has now posted a 1.64 ERA in their last 12 games, allowing just nine earned runs in their last 38 innings, while striking out 32 and walking just 22... RHP Chris Bootcheck and RHP Mike Koplove anchor the bullpen and continue to prove that they are two of the best relievers in the IL as Bootcheck has not allowed a run in his last eight outings (7.2 IP) and has struck out 12 and walked just two during that stretch, while Koplove has yet to allow a run in his four outings (5.0 IP) with the Tribe this season... Bootcheck also leads all hurlers in the IL with at least 30 strikeouts in strikeout to walk ratio with an 8.2 to 1 (41 SO vs. 5 BB) ratio and along with Koplove is tied for fourth in the league with 25 appearances. PITCHING PROWESS: The Indianapolis pitching staff has posted the second best ERA (2.56) in the International League so far in the month of June... So far in the season s third month, Tribe hurlers have allowed just 39 earned runs in 137 innings, while striking out 94 and posting an 8-8 record... Starters Ty Taubenheim and Eric Hacker have led the way for the Indians in June as Taubenheim has been nearly flawless with a 2-0 record and 0.53 ERA in his three starts and Hacker has been nearly as dominant with a 2-0 record and 1.46 ERA in his two starts so far this month Starter Virgil Vasquez has also pitched well in the season s third month as the right hander tossed the Indians second complete game of the season and picked up his team-leading fifth win in game one of Wednesday, June 18th s doubleheader as the California native allowed only two runs on five hits in seven innings of work to move to 5-2 on the year. FANTASTIC FIELDING: The Tribe defense turned four double plays in Wednesday s doubleheader against Gwinnett and has now turned 20 double plays in their last 15 games, as well as recording at least one double play in 12 of their last 14 games... The Indians currently sit atop the International League with 22 double plays turned in the month of June and rank second in the IL with 69 double plays turned so far this season... 1B Steve Pearce also continues to convert more double plays than any other first baseman in the IL with 54 so far this season, while also ranking second with 442 putouts... The Indianapolis defense has not only turned multiple double plays but has also played impressive all-around defensive as they currently hold the International League s best team fielding percentage with.981.
