2004-05 SEASON IN REVIEW DEFENSE KEYS CAL S SUCCESS Throughout the 2004-05 season, Cal s defensive performance was the most reliable indicator of the Bears success on the court. The Bears finished 12-3 when holding opponents to less than 70 points and 1-13 when surrendering 70 or more. Two schools were not able to crack 50 vs. Cal Hampton (69-46) and Washington State (59-47) while UCLA managed just 51 points Jan. 22 the Bruins lowest output against the Bears since winning 51-47 in 1975. In addition, eight teams shot 35.0 percent or lower from the floor including WSU, which sank 29.8 percent (14-47) of its tries against the Bears Jan. 2. Overall, Cal ranked fourth in the Pac-10 in both field goal percentage defense (43.5%) and scoring defense (70.8 ppg). Richard Midgley paced the Bears with a career-high 50 threepointers in 2004-05. California completed the 2004-05 season with a 13-16 overall record and tied for eighth in the Pacific-10 Conference with a 6-12 mark. Handicapped before the year even began due to knee surgery for 2004 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Leon Powe that kept the power forward on the sidelines all season, the Golden Bears suffered the effects of injuries throughout the campaign, often limiting Cal to just eight healthy scholarship players. Point guard Ayinde Ubaka missed 11 games after breaking his foot in late November, while guard Richard Midgley strained his right shoulder in the league opener and played hurt the rest of the year. In addition, freshman center Sam Rayburn (knee) and junior forward Jordi Geli (foot) did not suit up all season. Still, the Bears jumped out to a 7-3 mark during the non-league portion of their schedule, winning both of their road games. On Nov. 27, Cal halted BYU s 40-game home winning streak vs. non-conference opponents with a 67-64 victory in Provo, while the Bears edged San Diego State, 60-57, to claim victory in the San Diego Slam. Cal also captured the Office Depot Golden Bear Classic with a 69-46 triumph over Hampton and a 61-58 win over Pepperdine that wasn t decided until Midgley s three-pointer swished through at the buzzer. In Pac-10 action, Cal continued its road success by claiming a 59-47 decision at Washington State and also pulled off victories at UCLA (64-51) and Arizona State (84-82). Still, the Bears needed a win in their final regular-season contest vs. Washington State to qualify for the eight-team Pac-10 Tournament. With Marquise Kately scoring 17 points, including the go-ahead bucket with 1:26 left in overtime, Cal emerged with a 63-57 victory and a playoff berth. Overall, center Rod Benson led the Bears in both scoring (13.3 ppg) and rebounding (6.3 rpg), while Midgley drained a career-high 50 threepointers to move into sixth place on Cal s career list with 134. BENSON BLOSSOMS ON THE BLOCK With Leon Powe missing for the year with a knee injury and Amit Tamir having finished his eligibility and signed with a professional team in Greece, Cal entered the 2004-05 season without a proven frontcourt player on the roster. In fact, of the Bears available post players, none had ever started a collegiate game prior to the year. Into that void stepped 6-10 Rod Benson. A little-used reserve who averaged a mere 1.8 ppg in 37 previous games, Benson emerged as one of the most improved players in the Pac-10 if not the country pacing the squad in scoring (13.3 ppg) and rebounding (6.3 rpg). Owner of a team-best six double-doubles, Benson also shot 54.3 percent from the floor, which ranked seventh in the Pac-10. In league games, his statistics were higher: 14.7 ppg and 7.7 rpg. Benson scored a career-high 25 points vs. Colorado Dec. 7, and he corralled a personal-best 14 rebounds at UCLA Jan. 22. Perhaps the biggest basket of Midgley s career came during his freshman season when he nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key with 3.9 seconds left in overtime to lift Cal to a 76-74 win over North Carolina State in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament. Early in the 2004-05 season, he drained another threepointer as time expired to give the Bears a 61-58 victory over Pepperdine in the championship game of the Office Depot Golden Bear Classic Dec. 23. In the ASU contest, Martin Smith attempted a 17-footer in the closing seconds, but Midgley grabbed the offensive rebound and sank a leaning five-footer. After a Sun Devil timeout, he then tipped away the inbounds pass, which greatly reduced the amount of time ASU had to set up a final play. Darrall Imhoff, a center on Cal s 1959 NCAA championship team and a member of the 1960 U.S. Olympic team, was inducted into the Pac-10 Hall of Honor in March... Alex Pribble was voted to the Pac-10 All-Academic second team, giving the Bears at least one player on the all-academic squad in every year since 2000... eight players earned at least 10 starts during the season... despite playing without Leon Powe, the 2004 Pac-10 rebounding champ, Cal outrebounded its opponents by a 34.9 to 34.8 margin... after the season, walk-ons Martin Smith and Alex Pribble were awarded scholarships for the 2005-06 campaign... in his first game as a Bear, Eric Vierneisel shot 4-for-4 from three-point range vs. UC Riverside Nov. 11... the Nov. 11 opener against UCR was the earliest in school history (records complete through 1946-47)... after the season, both Dominic McGuire and Kevin Langford transferred to other schools. Season in Review WALK-ON MARTIN SMITH GUIDES FROM THE POINT Martin Smith may have been a third-year walk-on, but the 5-11 point guard certainly held up against the best the Pac-10 had to offer. With 16 conference starts, he started more league games than any Cal player, sitting out the opening tap vs. UCLA and USC only, while his 29.1 minutes per game led the squad for Pac-10 contests. Fifth in the Pac-10 with a 1.95:1 assist-to-turnover ratio, Smith set his career best with eight assists vs. Hampton Dec. 22 and matched the total with another eight handoffs at Arizona Feb. 3. 2005 SUMMER ITALY TOUR ITALY 2005 BEARS COMPLETE 12-DAY TOUR WITH 5-0 RECORD This past summer, the California basketball team took the trip of a lifetime when the Golden Bears traveled to Northern Italy for a 12-day tour that included five games against international competition. After departing from San Francisco International Airport Aug. 12, Cal started its adventure in Florence, then stayed overnight in Venice and Como, with many stops in between including Pisa, Lucca, Verona, Milan and the Alps before returning to the Bay Area Aug. 23. In the competitive portion of their trip, the Bears posted a 5-0 record with four of the wins coming by double-digit margins. Leon Powe led the offense by averaging 23.6 ppg, with four others at more than 10 points per game Ayinde Ubaka (18.8 ppg), Omar Wilkes (17.8 ppg), Richard Midgley (14.0 ppg) and DeVon Hardin (11.6 ppg).
