Page 2 M.W. Bulletin 12 Feb 2014 PRESIDENTS REPORT Another interesting night last Wednesday, with Rotarian Chia Taing speaking to us on The longevity Revolution Although the presentation was ultimately the promotion of a product line, Chia presented some interesting facts about how we are on average living longer, but with fewer taxpayers coming through to support us in the manner to which we oldies have become accustomed. She talked about how medical and cosmetics technology is helping us live longer without looking and feeling older. The disappointing aspect is that as turning 100 will no longer be special, we are less likely to get our photo in the local paper when the time comes! I read in RDU this week that we will not even get a mention when we turn our toes up, as the Called to Higher Service page has been scrapped. Just a change to the RDU heading would have sufficed. You will recall the devastating earthquake late last year, followed by a huge typhoon, which devastated the Philippines and parts of Vietnam, with a reported loss of 6000 lives in the Philippines alone. How quickly the impact of this and the recovery process has been pushed out of the press by stories of drug runners doing it tough in Indonesian jails, and their prospects of parole. Where are our priorities? The good news is that Disaster Aid Australia has now provided shelter and assisted more than 10,000 families. Working with the Rotary Club of Metro Iloilo on Panay Island and Balay Mindanaw on Mindanao Island, Rotary is commencing to install Skyhydrant water purification systems. Also, 1000 Home repair kits have been delivered. DAA are in the Philippines for the long haul, rebuilding homes and installing water systems. DAA is doing great work thanks to your our local support. I have received a complete report which is too large for the Bulletin. I will circulate it separately this weekend. Glen mentioned last Wednesday that Down Syndrome Victoria is holding its annual family fun day on 23 March. Unfortunately, it coincides with our District Conference, and in any event we usually have difficulty getting volunteers for the day. Glen did get a couple of volunteers this year thank you but we have decided it will be difficult to support this year. We will help them in other ways. I am looking for a volunteer to take over MUNA. It is very interesting and rewarding and not overly time consuming, but I will be taking on other projects in the future. Please let me know if you are interested. A social night is planned for Wednesday at the Leighoak Club in the Bistro downstairs. Same arrangement regarding meals meal of the day - $22.00. See you then Terry No photo s this week. PHOTO S FROM LAST WEEK CONGRATULATIONS & CELEBRATIONS 12 February 18 February: A big Happy Birthday to Don for his 80 th birthday on 16 th Feb and to Gordon on 16 th Feb. Happy Anniversary on joining Rotary, to Michael, Pete and Mara, all on 13 th Feb. MEMBERS ANNOUNCEMENTS COMMUNITY SERVICE As we only had 2 confirmed acceptances for DSV Family Fun Day I have advised them that we cannot assist them this year. Perhaps the new Community Services Director can reassess in Rhonda s Rotary Year. Glen Watkins
