Last Time Out: Norfolk State freshman center Marian Brooks connected on seven of her 10 free throws for the game, all in the second half, to help the NSU women s basketball team to its first win of the season, a 78-74 victory over St. Paul s on Friday night at Echols Hall. The win was also the first for interim head coach Debra Clark as the Spartans head coach. As a team, NSU (1-2) shot 75 percent (18-of-24) from the charity stripe in the second half alone and was 21-of-29 (72.4 percent) for the game. The game was close the entire way. The largest lead St. Paul s (0-2) was able to accumulate was a six-point advantage, 27-21, with 6:33 left in the first half. But a three-point play by junior guard Raychele Payne put the Spartans up by two, 32-30 with 3:31 left in the opening period. The Lady Tigers took the lead (34-32) on a jumper by Kiara Walton with 1:06 left and went into halftime with a 36-35 advantage. NSU took the lead for good on a layup by sophomore guard Whitney Long with 12:51 left in the game. The Spartans went on a 19-7 run over the next 5:38 to take their largest lead of the game, 12, after a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Marquilla Evans to bring the score to 65-53. But the Lady Tigers slowly chipped away at the lead and got within one, 75-74, on a layup by Tatiana Ellis with 33 seconds left in the game. Brooks and Long combined for 3-of-5 free throws in the last 25 seconds to preserve the win for the Spartans. Long led the Spartans for the second consecutive game with careerhigh-tying 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor. She hit six of her seven free throws, had a career-high seven assists, and added four rebounds and four steals. Evans had 13 points and two rebounds, while Brooks and Payne each scored 11 points. Brooks set new career-highs in points and assists (one), and tied her career-best with three rebounds. Going for Two: On Friday against UAB, the Spartans will look to do something they have not done since the 2005-06 season: win two consecutive games. NSU s last back-to-back wins were MEAC victories over North Carolina A&T (Jan. 28, 2006) and South Carolina State (Jan. 30, 2006) at Echols Hall. Since then, NSU is 15-84 (including this season). Long off to a Good Start: Sophomore guard Whitney Long has made the most of her playing time in the last two games. Against Wofford, she had 19 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the field, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, and added three steals in 18 minutes. In the St. Paul s game, she was 6-of-11 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line, and had 19 points, a career-high seven assists, four rebounds and four steals in 31 minutes. Long leads the Spartans in scoring (14.7 ppg) and in steals (3.0 spg). Winning the Turnover Battle: In the last two games, the Spartans have committed fewer turnovers than their opponents. NSU had 21 giveaways compared to Wofford s 28 and forced St. Paul s into 29 while only committing 23. Through three games, the Spartans are averaging 22.7 turnovers per game, while their opponents are turning it over 25 times per game. 2

McNair Out for Now: Redshirt-senior center Tiffany McNair will miss the first few games of the season due to a recurring shoulder injury. McNair dislocated her right shoulder prior to the 2007-08 season and did not play in any games after having surgery. Additionally, she redshirted the 2005-06 season after having surgery on her left shoulder. She returned to the court last season, averaging 2.3 points and 3.0 rebounds per game and led the team with 20 blocks for the season. Spartans Picked 11th: NSU was picked to finish 11th in the preseason poll of league coaches and sports information directors. The Spartans went 1-27 overall and 1-15 in MEAC play last year, finishing the regular season in 11th place.
